Does Ronin Hold Up? - Movies with Mikey

Does Ronin (1998) hold up? The title is a rhetorical question. Welcome to the mini-show within that other show we call Movies with Mikey! Enjoy some retrospection on classic 90's films, and explore some history and details we probably haven't thought about... at least not for a long time.
John Frankenheimer, David Mamet, Robert De Neiro, along with the entire cast and crew, make an entirely practical action-spy-heist-car movie with a level of care and detail that will likely never be matched.
(Okay, maybe John Wick - #BecauseKeanu - but they still use a little CG in that series!)

Ronin's car chases had weight, and mass, they were real, and younger me was feeling like life was good, because I had been allowed to see them on the magical screen.

The thing that always gets me about Ronin is all the civilian casualties. It's one of the few action movies I can think of where they actually show what would happen to innocent bystanders in a Hollywood shootout.

Seen it only 3 times, but it's time again. And I don't even like car chases in general, an overused, often boring - to me - part of too many films. This is one of the exceptions where the chase scenes were impressive enough to be a good part of the movie.

I developed a love for movies made in the late 90's and early 00's. The environment, the clothes, the technology. It brings me a feeling of nostalgia. I was born in 1990. I watched Ronin as a kid, right when it hit movie stores. I remember that the last scene impressed me a lot. With Rober De Niro's character leaving on one side and Jean Reno on the other, after saying goodbye. The thought "They never saw each other again", came to mind, as if it had been spoken in the movie. It impacted me because there were 2 guys who got very close to each other, as much as their way of life would allow, and they would never see each other again. This movie is good because the characters are good. You believe they know what they're doing, without being forced. This is shown naturally throughout the film. They are not invincible, sometimes one of them escapes death, because there are so many people involved, that some get in the way of others. I keep watching this movie from time to time. Calms me down and entertains me. I've been saving it on my PC, along with other movies that have the same effect on me.

The car chase scenes are simply fantastic (and the rest is great too). Thanks for another quality video and the interesting in depth info - i've subscribed not long ago and have been immensely enjoying all the content ever since. There is a great documantary on the making of The Island of Dr Moreau that Frankenheimer took over from 2014 : Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. I caught it on Netflix a few years ago. Stanley wrote and directed a great little movie called Hardware from 1990. Cheers, Mikey! You da best!

Haven't seen Ronin, but I did in part learn screenwriting from my professor JD Zeik. I didn't know that his contribution to Ronin was mostly in story and not script, but I guess I'm not surprised since he hasn't landed much work since the 90s, and that's also because he's been busy teaching and raising a family. But he's still writing! He showed my class a few pages of a script he was writing at the time to teach us about craft (this was back in early 2017 I think) so he hasn't given up!! Anyway this video has convinced me to give Ronin a shot, so good job!

I remember watching Ronin when it came out. What stuck with me was, not the car chases, which I’ve come to admire in more recent viewing, but how much of a let down Sean Bean’s character was - I ambushed you with coffee. This is only because I’m from the same town as Bean. In when you see Sheffield on the screen you want a representation you can be proud of. It’s not all Full Monty. But did you know the narrative device used is called a MacGuffin (suitcase). Great video and great film, and next time I watch it it will have a sad swan song vibe about it

I adore Ronin, but didn't think this was your best work, both from an entertainment and an explanation standpoint. The references to random things I usually so adore seem instead to simply break up your narrative and case every time you start to build it, and the video never seems to build up the momentum that so many of your 'Movies with Mikey' videos do. DO FIGHT CLUB!!! :D Also, thank you for this. Deniro is one of those people that you just associate with some of the best movies ever made, and the ones in the 90's are some of my favorite: Ronin, Heat, GoodFellas, Casino, even silly ones like Analyze This (and Analyze That, which wasn't *as* good, but still good). Pretty much anything on his entire filmography is worth repeated watching (well, ok, not Dirty Grandpa...that was a dumpster fire, but even the best actors have a couple of those). I would love to see you do a commentary on something like GoodFellas or Casino...classics of the Gangster genre, and not so far back as something like the GodFather movies, which are brilliant, but they're too old school for most modern moviegoers to appreciate).

Ronin, The Manchurian Candidate, Seconds, Birdman of Alcatraz, Grand Prix, Black Sunday, The Iceman Cometh, Seven Days in May, The Train - John Frankenheimer is better than we think he is. And if you think the driving and stunts in this movie are good, watch Grand Prix from 1966 in which actors like James Garner are driving their cars batshit crazy fast _for real_ and was shot with every single 65mm camera in existence at the time. THAT is filmmaking.

I really like how you give different viewpoints of movies that I generally don't think about. I almost always watch Ronin when it comes one, and the shout out to Enemy of State makes me want to watch it again (which like Ronin, I usually do when it's on the cable channel). I really liked your take on John Wick 1 & 2, never really thought about the Greek Gods for 1 and video games for 2. I really liked 1, but was meh on 2. Great action, but the story was slightly dull because of the infinite spawn aspect of the bad guys. Will be waiting for your take on 3, which looks like mindless action, but good nonetheless. It'd be cool if you did one for Mr. Right (Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick) but I'm not sure if there is much hidden meaning in that movie. It's pretty silly but I always enjoy watching it. Anyway, thanks for these, they make me think of movies differently. I'm currently struggling through a re-watch of "American Gods" but there is so much there that it's difficult to grasp the full meaning, or if that any even exists. Lots of myth along with a lot of WTF.
