Ronnie James Dio - ISOLATED VOCALS - Rainbow In The Dark - Vocal Analysis and Tutorial
Have you ever wanted to take a deeper look at how Ronnie James Dio created one of the greatest, most legendary vocals of all time?
In this video I'm going to show how Dio sang "Rainbow In The Dark" as we look at the isolated vocal track, line by line and then dive into how it was actually recorded.
I'll also show how to add effect to Dio's vocals to achieve that similar sound and then I'll do my own version with the same effects and we'll finish by toggling back and forth between the two so you can hear how closely they sound.

Great video Ken, I was fortunate to watch Ronnie perform from the front of the stage and he was absolutely amazing. I was extremely fortunate to spend some time with him afterwards and I can't stress enough about how genuine, humble and just a sweet human being he was God bless him. 🙏🤘

I recently discovered a rocking 1960 R&B song by LaVern Baker titled "Voodoo Voodoo". Her voice reminds me of Ronnie's. He covered several R&B and soul songs in the late '50s and early '60s, among them "Shout", "Ooh Poo Pah Doo", and "What'd I Say". This influence would show up in later performances when he sang soulful runs with great agility.

Wow!! That’s impressive! You sing great! You can do all the songs I bet….to sing like the legendary DIO? My favorite singer/songwriter?! Geez…..Plus I didn’t know that DIO used a doubler on the chorus… it sounds larger than life..never heard his isolated vocal tracks though. I like how you explain the techniques used in the singing..I know it’s hard to sing that way. There is so much going on in that piece….just that one line. Takes a lot of practice.

Right, compress measurrelease while teqnique flex range, carry and project. I've done karaoke 18 months age 53&54, choir elementary school and parents at 20 ..Glee club singers. We would occasionally use an Eventide Harmonizer and detune it a bit and recombine it with the original track to thicken the voice up a bit, but we did that with mediocre vocalists with thin voices. You say you hear hramonizer in some solo passages and I'm just not hearing it. Do you know for a fact it was used? And you talk about "doublers" when it was just easier to rewind the tape and have the artist double their own vocals. And what was the source of these tracks? Are they honest to go stems of tracks right of the original 2 inch reel of tape, or did someone take some other source and and try to isolate the vocals, which could lead to all sorts of artifacting from that process, which you might be hearing as something else.

What makes Dio's voice superior to most who try to cover him, is that behind all that growling, you can hear that pure unstrained beautiful tone. Which most great singers have. I feel in some ways the carriage is being put before the horse here. If I were to teach Dio, I would first teach the studrnt how to sing just as powerful without adding any of the growls.

For the producer geeks out there, it is important to mention that this isolated track is going thru a compressor (Not the kind of vocal compression Ken teaches, but an audio effect making the vocals sit a bit tighter within the overall mix)

Honestly Ken. You sound so much better than Ronnie. And that's not an exaggeration. As I listen to him over and over closely, I notice that he is often unable to maintain his pitch. It seems to slide around a little bit - sometimes sharp, sometimes flat. It's not related to vibrato. It's not a "technique," it just sounds a bit "off" to my informally "trained" voice. Looking forward to starting vocal classes when I finish writing my study on the book of Daniel.

Everytime I sang at karaoke, I always made sure I had reverb - not too much, not too little, just enough to enrich and "volumize" my voice's sound. If there was no reverb, it sounded flat and kinda lame and I was always disappointed with how I sounded. Good thing most everyone was usually too drunk to notice, lol.

When you've become somewhat known by the reglulars, they know what you can do, and on a night when there's a 60-90 minute wait in the rotation, they start bugging you all night with, "When are you singing? When are you up?", and then when you finally get up on that stage, the host announces you and the whole bit, you do your song, you kill it, and these same blottos come up a minute later after you step off the stage and say , "When are you singing? When are you up?" And you just wanna go, "Are you seri... I was just... didn't you see... I was... ugh." It's actually kind of funny I guess, lol.

Yes,he mentioned this in an interview that he almost took a razorblade to the part of the tape with this song since he found it to popy. The other members of the band talked him out of it though, wich afterwards he was gratefull that they did but he still felt that it was a popy song.

Ken , why do you contort your tongue as round and prominent. I have tried to imitate you ,but I cannot make my tongue form the way yours does. Is it some technique that is important?

You should do one on Liliac's singer their cover of rainbow in the dark. they are all brothers and sisters an the singing sister has a very unique do like voice.
