I had three jobs last year GAF Timberline HD all installed with code MC 103 Charcoal. Each house lost 3-5 shingles. Still trying to get reimbursed for the repairs.

What state you in? How fast of wind speed? I've been installing gaf in Illinois for a long time and haven't had issues.

skliros Ontario, Canada. We have used GAF shingles for 10 years now, no issues for long time. Just last year we experienced the blow offs. 90 mile an hour winds. Shouldn’t have come off.

I'm getting ready to put a roof on and this was a beneficial video. FYI, make sure that your testing equipment is calibrated by an outside company because if you're ever called in as an expert witness in a lawsuit, that's one of the areas a defense lawyer will attack. Thank you.

I have been a Certainteed SSM company since 2001. I have always stressed nailing in the common bond area. I can count on both hands the number of houses we have lost shingles on in the last 19 years and nearly every blow off was on the north side of a late fall install that got hit in a very hard spring wind storm. I am a little disgusted with GAF's lack of participation.

We are too disgusted with it. Nothing we can do about it but keep inviting. As far as common bond: it is common sense for good installer

That’s awesome. I knew OC and iko would hit from their nailing strips. I’m just glad to see that pabco is right there. I always put my nails on the common bond to be sure they hold tight. It is where they put their nail line too. Preferred contractor with pabco and couldn’t be more happy. Thanks for all the tests. They seem to be a bit underrated, and hopefully the rest of these tests are gonna be as exciting as this.

My GAF Timberline HD are well loved by my chickens, since the granular loss is so severe, they love to eat the tens of pounds of granules that end up on the ground and their gizzards need that gravel. I would not use GAF, or Tampad in the future on a dog house, or if they were free.

I have been roofing all my life and have yet to see better results than the durations. I’m glad to see iko use a nail strip, because I remember when they were in people’s yards. I just wonder if they have fixed the seal problem... durations seem to seal almost too much.

I would like to see you include Euroshield roofing products in your review. These shingles are made from recycled tires, look like a cedar shake or slate profile, virtually hail proof and will outlast all of the asphalt products.

GAF shingles are poor quality. The laminated part is usually longer or shorter than the rest of the shingle which makes it harder to keep straight. Granules fall off before they are out of the package. Each shingle has such poor dimensions its like each one is unique. Its not only the shingles either their synthetic underlayment has problems also. Tiger paw never lays flat causes buckling in the shingles. Vents missing rivets. The Pro strart starter course shingles are so far off you have to cut them back and start the stagger again due to matching seams. Remember a roof is not just shingles but a system of products look into other things as well

my wife and I are having our roof shingle replaced on our cape code home, I would like to know if certain color roof shingles...Darks v.s Light play any effects during summer and winter, if so which one do u recommend b/t Dark or Light colors, please give us you personal professional input...we're deciding b/t architectural OC & IKO Dynasty shingles...we both can't make up our minds weather to purchase a Dark or light color shingle.

Another good video Dimitri. You must be comparing the OC Duration with IKO Dynasty for 1 and 2. I agree totally I use OC Durations. But if your comparing OC Oakridge and IKO Cambridge then we’re not talking 1 and 2 anymore. The Duration has a wide nailing Zone but if you look at the edge of the shingle the actual common bond is only about 3/4” just like almost all the other manufacturers. Fortunately you can nail anywhere in the hockey tape I call it and that shingle won’t blow off. The Malarkey Legasy is the only shingle with the large 1 3/4” common bond . But ya in a pull test it won’t compare to the Duration and the Dynasty. In my opinion every time I have to fix blow-offs it’s always because the roofers nail above the common bond area. The manufacturers like BP make a Mystique shingle with a 6” exposure. That’s way too big and is more susceptible to blow-offs. Your way better off with a smaller shingle like Duration with a 5 5/8” exposure. OC all the way man. That’s why I’m your fan lol.

Great, insightful videos! I'm looking at new construction builds & have been watching ever since builder said they used IKO architectural shingles for roofing. They wont tell me anymore than that. Based on your reviews of the product what would you consider being a realistic lifespan of the roof? Thanks!

Most asphalt shingles will last anywhere from 15 to 25 years. 30 at best but not in extreme climates

In the last 20 years in the Midwest, we have had no problems exclusively using Landmark shingles from CertainTeed.

We've replaced hundreds of roofs where I live for defective landmark shingles, specifically premature granule loss. Probably thousands have been replaced by other companies in the last 5-6 years.

Are you testing the different lines within each manufacture? For instance malarkey has an entry-level 40 year shingle versus their 50 year legacy shingle. Also does it make a difference as far as you know?

Wait, are you comparing Heritage to Duration and Dynasty? If so, that's not even close to a fair comparison. Do IKO Cambridge and OC Oakridge to Tamko Heritage and get back to us please.

I wonder how you could recreate a pull test after a way of activating sealant. For Instance. Not a fan of BP shingles but I know they have a double tar line. Can anyone confirm Malarkey is the only brand with no class action? Even Pabco?

We couldnt find much on Pabco, but its much smaller company

Malarkey don't have class actions cause they make good product. The coating and asphalt mixture is kept and at very tight spec tolerance, they are more about QUALITY rather then quantity. I was the coater and press operator at the Portland Oregon plant for 11yrs. Quality check was done every hour on the hour..rub test for gradual loss,seal down thickness, length, width, coating thickness and weights, weight checks every 15mins, backing sand adhesions...etc.

There is no warranty regardless of what they say. When they come out they will find something that wasn’t installed properly. EVERYTIME, THEY WONT PAY.
