I'm glad ice and water isn't necessary where I live. Because I hate having to pull that stuff off.
@TAGGdinc

Y'all roofers need to start making ur gutter aprons at least a quarterinch away from the fascia board so a gutter can easily slip under without being forced to bend the metal up everywhere a gutter will go. When you force a dumb gutter guy to bend the flashing up it risks us pulling the nails out of flashing. Plus the water likes to escape behind the gutter when you install it super tight the way you did.
@TAGGdinc
@TAGGdinc 3 года назад
Ya the bottom little bend is supposed tomkeepl that from happening but when installed super tight that bend is smaller than a water drop through surface tension it will stay fixed to the fascia board which is exactly what you are trying to prevent.

I'm with you on this one. The internet is full of confusing information on drip edge and aprons, some that include your videos. After seeing the misuse of drip edges, mostly not protecting or creating negative slope at eaves. I see no reason for it at the gutters. I hope I understand your method correctly. Mostly it seems to be about the roofer looking at what they are actually creating in relation to water and ice.

I like slightly crimp the undercourse and trim the little angle off on the bottom, then my overlap bumps into cut, in turn eliminates the bulging overlap. On the right valley, I use drip edge for the whole transition, gives a cleaner look. Plus I always have a 1/2" overhang with the shingles, and if you follow a clean line the overhang would be about an inch. Which will void manufacturers warranty for exceeding max 3/4" overhang.

Excellent video. It’s the little details that make the roof aesthetically pleasing and water tight. I moved into a house a month ago and just realized that there are no drip edges on it. They just bent the top of the fascia, about 3/4 inch at 90 degrees away from the roof, to support the edge of the shingles. Not impressed. I just hope water is not dripping behind the fascia till i can up there and fix it.
@Josh-ww5kz

It's weird, where I live not many people seem to care about that sort of thing. They'd rather just have metal going up the rake. Which does offer protection but not as much as if it were don't in the eaves. Guess they all wants something more visibly pleasing then something that actually makes a difference in if the eave fascia rots or not

@GrandRoofingInc 20 дней назад
I don't see why you would need to. Using an apron is good. Was he encouraging aluminum for any particular reason? Aluminum is a little softer and more flexible, so wondering if that might be why, for him to get the gutter in easier?

@@GrandRoofingInc He mentioned electrolysis or dissimilar metals, but I cant find any aluminum apron so I'll stick some duct tape to the back so the metal doesnt touch the aluminum gutter. Probably a non issue with asphalt since they last maybe 30 years only.

I like ice and water OVER the gutter apron like you did. However, on rake, why not put ice and water also OVER drip edge so that any water leaking through shingle will not be able to get under drip edge and onto wood?
@scottd2986

It's a code requirement in most states. Idea behind it is if very high winds happen s and lifts the shingles the drip edge holds the paper down, less chance of tearing and getting the deck wet.

Question: I'm about to get a new roof and saw that my neighbor had silicone caulking at the bottom edge of the gable apron all along it's length. Why would a roofer do that as does it need to be sealed at the bottom or not sealed? Also, if you have gutters and there is more than a 2" drop on the length.... do you need a edge that is 2" along the first part, and then an edge that is wider for when there is more than a 2" drop on the 16" lenghth? Thanks, and hope you are still answering your comments.
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 2 года назад
Yes still answering comments as best I can. As far as silicone on the bottom apron, if they install the roof correctly there should be no need for it. Although without seeing exactly what you're talking about I can't say for 100% certainty. You're other question with the 2" drop I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. If you have any photos feel free to send them over in a message on our Facebook page and I will take a look at them.

Great video with very much detail and little tips 👍 But I have a question. It's just a small detail but, why are you cutting the 45 on the one that goes over and not the one that goes under when you are installing the drip edge on the gable end? I always do it like that and I think it looks a little bit cleaner 😉
@Josh-ww5kz
@Josh-ww5kz 3 года назад
It looks cleaner for the first like couple of minutes after installing, but afterwards when the roof is complete, you don't even look at those sort of small unneeded details. As the shingles that overhang it cover up that area anyways

Question, why not use Ice shield for the whole roof instead of only half and the other half by synthetic felt?
@anthonygiesbrecht3107
@anthonygiesbrecht3107 Год назад
Ice shield is much more expensive per roll, and each roll covers far less square feet than synthetic. So you put the ice shield on the sections that are most likely to experience ice damming (the eaves and valleys), and put synthetic on the rest of the roof that doesn't require such a heavy duty product. Technically the ice shield is the better product, but for the average roof it would be total overkill to use to cover the whole thing.

@@eambriz86 I'm not American so I'm not sure what those stores offer. But from what I know those stores are more frequently visited by homeowners rather than contractors. You're better off visiting the lumberyards that the contractors go to. General rule of thumb, refer to drip edge as "90 degree flashing", and gutter apron as "45 degree flashing". Different stores have different names for their products, but if you clarify what degree you want, it should help you explain to the salesperson what you want.

@@dtm8073 aluminum fascia always expands and then causes the buckle. I assume you installed it when it was cold and then nailed it. The bigger the facia board, the bigger chance of it "oil canning" as we call it. I install seamless guttering, and if we install in very cold temperatures, come next summer, "on occasion" not all, the gutter will buckle also. It looks as if someone actually kicked the gutter with their foot every two feet. Which is the space that you set the hangars. So in between each hangar you will see an inward buckle of the aluminum. The gutter can expand almost an inch in the summer if it was installed in temperatures below 40 degrees. Facia reacts the same way but to more of an extent because it is very thin metal.

There ice and water seals and down to the decking yes as well as the apron. You could also hang the ice and water down over your fascia board like it calls for.
@Josh-ww5kz
@Josh-ww5kz 3 года назад
This is wrong. The dripedge/eave metal should be on first before ice and water. Exactly like it is shown in the video. Yes, ice and water is meant to stick to the decking, that's its purpose, to stick to the decking, and to seal around the nail protrusions to offer better chance at keeping water from flowing down the nail and into the decking If you were to put the drip edge overtop of the i&w at the eaves. If any ice damming happens, the water will simply have a chance of tucking itself underneath the eave metal. Water flows downhill. Then it will be contacting the fascia behind the gutters and cause it to rot.
