Licensed since 1985...Without question the best composition shingle was Celotex “Ambassador.” They we’re made from about 1997-2000 then It was reconfigured by CertainTeed, it was still good but nowhere near as good as Ambassador. I’ve been on many old Ambassador roofs & they’re showing “No” sign of wear...

Us has a lot of cheap minded people, when the contractor doesn't even know they are using mid to low grade materials, and call it top of the line, a lot of ignorance happens..people are fine with a 20 yr roof

Asphalt roofing is the waste child of the petroleum industry. It’s cheap so that many people buy the waste off petroleum conglomerates hands. By doing so they don’t have to manage it anymore, it becomes the owners responsibility and they make extra money from it. Win win win for them. As for other materials it’s often more climate viable then clay. You won’t find any clay roofs in Canada because of the heavy snow and it’s removal. According to me clay and metal are the winners. Clay is very durable in temperate to tropical weather and is inert and reusable. Metal is also very durable and is better suited for temperate to cold climates and is recyclable.

I love how the complaints here are "some American roofing materials are very affordable" and "asphalt shingles repurpose industrial waste that would otherwise just go in a tailings pond"... which to me both sound like good things but what do I know. 😂 When it comes to America, people can complain about anything I guess.

The reason fire rating is so much more important in a roof than in siding is that a lot of homes burn down from hot embers being blown onto the roof from a nearby fire.

The good thing is at the end of the day they all work! Seems like metal might be more worth it in the end anyway. They are very close in effectiveness so paying that extra for a minor difference in performance seems pointless. I agree with your choice of metal over rubber for sure, and I hope it lasts you a long time!

I will install all all systems if the money is there. I manufacture all of the Metal Systems we install, Using the highest quality Steel Coil from companies like Shedfield Meadows and Drexel Metals. These are all kind of 500 finishes. The big box stores only carry Chinese painted polyester process which tends to peel and fade. Wind on a standing seam roof is going to do differently than a 36 inch agricultural panel with exposed screws. This is because the standing seam roof is hooked everywhere the valleys, ridge it’s hooked to the drip edge. Not being ripped off in a hurricane. I think it is a 130 mph wind uplift that you get with a standing seam roof. Most Spanish tile roofs or Clay only provide about a 60% waterproof system the underlayment is what actually protects the house from leaking. slate is different it’s not much different in a asphalt shingle being nailed on a 6 inch pattern in some cases there isn’t even felt on some of these jobs.

I'm watching this three years to the day after Panama City Florida was hit by Hurricane Michael. I was in Panama City at the time and my in-laws shingles did okay holding up with up to 100 mile per hour winds. There were still shingles attached to the 10 x 10 section of the roof that ripped off the house and flew 20 ft away...

Thanks for sharing. I wouldn't put an asphalt roof on my doghouse...they are disposable throw away roofs. Their ratings and prorated guarantees are not worth the shingle wrapper that they are written on. If you want to see the reality of comp roofs just go to the local landfill where they dump it and see the mountains of senseless waste. I've heard that the rubber roofs made from new material are better than the ones made from recycled material. Many people put on rubber in neighborhoods where that sort of roof look is required. Metal roofs can be pressure washed primed and repainted after they start looking faded or chalky.

Thanks for the nice overview of different roofing types. Sadly, you decided not to cover my two favorites, copper and slate. I realize those are niche markets though and I will probably never own a home with either type. I'm not that familiar with rubber roofing, so your information was new to me and a little surprising. I know in other applications rubber is susceptible to dry rot and aging in direct sunlight. In fact prior to this video, I had only heard of rubber being used as a water barrier under living roofs where it is covered with soil and plant matter that protects it from degradation in sunlight. I am definitely curious now and will try to learn more of its use as a primary roofing material.

How is rubber better if most pipeboots made out of rubber they are done in under 10yrs isn't rubber more prone to sun damage? Also when you Say Rubber roofing you are talking about a product like DaVinci or Ecostar Right? and not a Rubberized SBS Shingle? How would a rubberized shingle would be better that a regular Asphalt shingle? ok this is a question within a question.

Dmitry, doesn't a true rubber product (like EuroShield) have different performance parameters (wind and impact resistance, durability, lifespan, etc.) from composite/thermo-plastic products like F-Wave and DaVinci? Is it really an "apples to apples" comparison having them in the same category? Do you have any thoughts on how EuroShield rubber shingles compare to F-Wave thermoplastic shingles, and how F-Wave compares to DaVinci?

@commercialconstructionlive7648
@commercialconstructionlive7648 3 года назад
The Clay roofing you refer to will most likely be imitation clay in most cases. These tiles are pigmented concrete and do not provide waterproofing. The waterproofing of these systems are relying on the underlayment. A genuine Clay roof is very rare and also is an imported product from Europe. Clay tile roofing is the best. Concrete tiles roofing is only slightly better than a good shingle system.
@StallionFernando
@StallionFernando 2 года назад
I'm sure you could import clay tiles from Mexico as well, plenty of California and Texas homes have them.
@CDCK006
@CDCK006 2 года назад
The amount of repairs we do on cement tile is ridiculous, constantly cleaning valleys and areas where debris piles up, having to refelt sections or whole roof, bad flahings. For the price i cant wrap my head around why someone would want tile
@commercialconstructionlive7648
@commercialconstructionlive7648 2 года назад
@@CDCK006 Its an architectural feature choice. People believe that the tile roof systems of America are the same as in Spain.... People arent educated on the fact that the American version is just a facade. While the European version is actually a really great roof. Due to the fact that they are applying kiln-dried clay tiles. Compared to the pigmented concrete non-waterproof tile that is applied in America which really relies on the underlayment qualities to provide the waterproofing.... Most people are fooled by the facade on all levels of modern building practices.

I disagree that asphalt shingles are the easiest to repair. 10+ years old (often takes dramatically less) and they are very fragile and brittle. And you must remove a bunch of shingles' fasteners to remove one damaged shingle, meaning you are likely to damage 3 shingles repairing one...then hoping you don't damage any more. Metal roofing is not that bad to repair in my opinion, in fact, I'd say the easiest since you can almost always buy new panels to match the old ones - something that is really hard to do with shingles for size and color, believe it or not. I have repaired shingle roofs that most contractors would not even walk on. However, the real problem seems to be that no companies want to repair them, only totally replace them. Finally, I'd like to point out that the only hail-proof roof is poured concrete. It's an absolute shame we continue to build wood frame homes where that's impossible, unlike a lot of the world. Constant hail has apparently become a serious issue in Colorado.
