Any decent measurement microphone can be used, but the one I use in the video is the MiniDSP Umik-1. It's not insanely expensive, and it comes with a calibration file.
Umik-1 microphone: amzn.to/2lS4ufM (anything you buy from Amazon within 24 hours of following this link would help this channel)
Special thanks to John Mulcahy, who produced this software and provides it to the audio world for free! He has a donation link, and knowing what it's like to produce free content, it would be really cool to send him a little something if you you find the program useful. I certainly do. Even a $1 helps, and it goes towards improving the software.

On that site you will find the software itself, links to discussions and help articles, and a general wealth of information beyond what I can provide.
As you can tell from the video, I'm no expert, and there are features in the program that I will touch on in future videos, but don't stop learning with me. I just wanted my viewers to get an idea of how to begin using the program. Once you get going, it gets a little easier.
The better you get at taking notes, the more useful past measurements are. As you could see in the video, there were a few times good notes would have made me look a little better (Flat vs Reference, lol). There might have been a difference with those settings on the X-2000, but it's not really important one way or another.
Also keep in mind that the line isn't everything. These graphs can hint at the difference between a single and dual subs, but it doesn't tell the whole "dynamic" story. It doesn't just fill in and even out bass, it adds a "movie theater" feel.
I should be listening to the PB-16 Ultra by itself, but I just can't hang, I need 2, it's too hard to go back to a single. I know what I'm hearing is "PB-2000 flavored" PB-16 Ultra, but you really need 2 identical subs to properly hear what any sub can do. For sure, there is increased realism, but a full review will happen after I get the second one in. I can't wait!

Subwoofers should reproduce quality sound with authority throughout the humanly audible bass spectrum (20-100 hertz). Most ported subwoofers do not.

Great vid! Watched the whole thing. This program looks great if you don't already have access to pro tools. I never watched an in-depth vid on it and I am def going to let my "tinkerer" clients know about it. Thanks!

Great video. I just ordered a minidsp 2X4 and the measuring mic. Looking forward to optimizing my two subs to the room. We really live in a golden age of home theater with the processing power available for modest money.

We sure do, it's a lot better than it used to be. The pro stuff is pretty pricey. Quick tip, when you use the MiniDSP 2x4, you will need to run your subs' gain a little higher. I was running at 50% and had to crank it up to 70% to get the same output. Took me a minute to figure that out.

Hi! Great video. It's not clear to me how do you inject the signal into the AVR. I mean, how to set up rew to send the signal to a especific channel. Is there a tutorial for that? Thanks!

I've got a Denon 4300 which also has the 'bass containment' feature. The idea that it can keep the bass in the room rocking whilst preventing it from travelling to another room is hilarious. I liked your demonstration that shows that all it does is just reduce the bass. You gotta love some of these silly features that manufactures claim to offer! Still great gear if you know what to use and avoid.

Have a very general question, after you understand the EQ change requirements - where do you input the EQ changes? Does the Marantz receiver have the ability to download an EQ filter????

Great intro I just got this as well. I calibrated my speakers using the internal tones from a Denon AVR to 75db for the speakers and 65db for the sub. My initial sweeps look like this. Falling from 100db to around 80db at the 80hz crossover then stay around 80db. Should this not be around 80db for the subs as well? Do have still have the subs way too loud?

Hey nice video. For a subwoofer do you measure and filer on the MiniDSP before or after the processor (XMC-1) does its room correction?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
I run room correction first with the miniDSP 2x4 in the loop as pass through, to account for the timing change, then measure with REW and then apply changes to the MiniDSP accordingly. If you don't run room correction with the 2x4 in the loop first, your timing will be off. It can be tricky.

Thanks for this however you didn't really mention what you do with the information in these charts. How do you know what to correct and then how do you go about correcting it? edit: I found your other video where you talked about using the Audyssey distance settings to adjust the response curve. In that video you mention that "this is without a MiniDSP 2x4". Would you be able to make a video where you perform further adjustments using the miniDSP and the mic you linked?

Hello, I hardly much about using REW and what Ohms mean on the REW and speakers....So, what numbers should I put on on my Hz to begin the test? How do I correct any crazy downs or peaks? How do I know which impedance to choose?
@wingrider7931
@wingrider7931 2 года назад
I've see REW used to help with calibrating numerous systems but always with an AVR receiver with HDMI inputs. What if you have an older analog system with RCA inputs only? Could you use a headphone to RCA adapter out of a computer into the system amp? Would this work just as well to aid with calibrating a pair of subwoofers?
@rlwings
@rlwings 6 лет назад
Does this proceedure replace Audyssey XT32? ... Are the results better? Can you alter the eq curve after the calibration... Does it only work through sources passed through a PC? (ie, you can't place the resulting calibration curve into the AVR so everything gets calibrated)
@FitraHomestead
@FitraHomestead 5 лет назад
No it doesn't replace audyssey all this is a graph of how your subs are measuring. You can use it to get an understanding of how it measures in different positions or after tweaks made on the avr, you can use the information from rew to make adjustments on the svs app to take peaks etc.

I have 2 SB16 Ultras with PEQ. Would I fix peaks and nulls by adjusting those particular frequencies on both subs?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 4 года назад
Yes, it works great for that! MUCH easier than a Mini DSP 2x4. Before getting into the PEQ's, I would make sure that your room correction is done with your first sample taken where your ears would be in your main listening position, and take the rest of the samples exactly 2 feet from that first sample, following the position of the mic on the screen. So for your 2nd sample, two feet to the left of the first sample. Your 3rd sample would be two feet to the right of the first sample, etc... No sample should be further than 2 feet of the very first sample. That should produce a smoother graph. From there, try my Distance Hack, adding between 1-4 feet to the subwoofer value after room correction, using REW to verify the best value. You can change the measurement on the AVR from 1 foot to .1 foot and really dial it in. +4 feet after room correction has been pretty reliable for me, so if the AVR sets it to 12 feet, try 16 feet. Because of the DSP on the SB-16, it will read as 2 feet or so further than the actual distance, which is normal and nothing to worry about. I wouldn't go further than +5 feet. It might produce a better looking graph, but it can become uncomfortable. One you have done that, use the PEQ's on the SB-16 Ultras to fine tune. I personally would keep the PEQ values the same on each sub, but you can experiment. Let me know how it goes!

@subwoofer 101 have important question. Im found out that the normal room meseuring is absolute crap because of the Lack of prcessorpower of the denon avr. Just the multieq app can handle those mesure data. When i add the dynamiceq Future in the app and send this Settings to the avr the Sound ist absolutely nice!. The Problem ist that denon do not enough to Tell that this is important for this lovely Sound. Why is that.? They put a product in the Market that could be a ferarri but its only a Ford...... with the regular mesurement. Do You have similar experiance with that?

Hi 😃 hope you are doing good. I had a query regarding connecting two subwoofers via y connector. 1 is svs pb 1000 and 2nd is sony anyways connecting both of them in a single pre out .. will that affect the performance of the sub's as the signal gets divided in to two ? Will it sound the same as a single subwoofer does or do I need to increase the signal from the receiver ?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
No noticeable signal degradation. You could run 4-8 from a single output using y splitters. You will likely need to turn the AVR subwoofer level down to compensate for the increased output from duals. Check out my Bass Hack series, lots of little things that you might find helpful.

So now what do you do after you have the graphs and information? If something was really out of whack, what things do you change to fix it? BTW set it to reference. Not flat. Reference is variable. Flat is fixed. That's probably why you are getting the same readings. Cheers for the video.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
I really don't like reference that much. One my complaints about the Denon is that it keeps going back to reference. I prefer flat, so I'll be wondering what's "off", and sure enough it's set back on reference. That's just my personal preference though. As far as what to do with the information from REW, that's a huge question. If you notice a big taper as the frequency goes lower (common with typical subwoofers) then better subs would be the fix. A big null or dead spot around 40-60 hertz happens more often when you have a single subwoofer. Duals (preferably the exact same model) help with that. You can also get that from mismatched dual subs. A big dip near the crossover can be alleviated by adding 1-4 feet to the subwoofer distance after audyssey (or any other room correction). Trust your ears on that one, because a better looking graph may not sound better. If your graph is really "bumpy" you can use a minidsp 2x4 or something similar to smooth it out. That's got an even bigger learning curve, but can be worth it. But you can also get some wonky response if you don't get everything just right with that process, so that can be a frustrating journey. Bumpy graphs are normal though, big dips are more of a problem. To sum it up, it's almost like you're asking what to do after looking under the hood of your car for the first time ever. It depends on what you see, you're not really sure what you're looking at, or what it should look like. I still have a lot to learn myself. You may not be able to tell what's "right" yet, but the more you try different settings and explore the program, it's easier to spot what's wrong.

@wh1972
@wh1972 6 лет назад
If you reduce the length measurement from 1M to 256K would that still work okay for your bass measurements? It'd certainly be much faster than 21seconds and may mean that the room has less time to build up bass reflections that will add to the original signal. Just asking, I'm just starting to use REW/UMIK myself.
@Subwoofer101

I use the shorter option now, much quicker. For the average user, I see no reason for the longer option.

This is one of many videos on how to use rew room correction but, nobody talks about how to implement the corrections on your reciever!!???....is there a unit that plugs into your reciever and if ....where do you plug it in? Does this work on all the speakers or is it only for subwoofers?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
I use it mostly to dial in the subwoofer distance setting, but if you check out my "Distance Hack" video, it's not super necessary. I typically add 4 feet to the subwoofer distance after room correction and call it a day. With some subs that have "on the fly" Parametric EQ's, like the higher end SVS subs, that's the easiest way to make adjustments. Some AVR's will allow you to edit, but not all. The next option is a MiniDSP 2x4, but to be real, you're looking at 10+ hours of steep learning curve. Lots of pitfalls. You have to do things in a certain order, or you might end up going backwards. I've been meaning to do a video on it for a while, but it's a big undertaking.

Is using one of these microphones and software beneficial if you already have a receiver that does Audyssey room calibration with it's own microphone? I have a Denon AVR-X6500H; and two Monolith 15" THX subwoofers coming tomorrow. I ordered the microphone but am wondering now if Audyssey accomplishes the same task.
@Subwoofer101

The way I look at Room EQ Wizard, it's a great way to check the results of Room Correction, find the right subwoofer distance setting (super helpful), and discover what you prefer by seeing how adjustments change the graph. If you have some serious problems, it will shed light on it. For example, I tried using 4 subs, 2 with a regular RCA connection, and 2 wireless. The response was odd, and when I measured it, I saw some SERIOUS cancellations. Probably the worst graph I've ever seen. As a result, I'll never mix wired and wireless subs. Hot mess. If you need to make adjustments to the response curve, you can do so using Room EQ Wizard and a Mini DSP 2x4. To be certain, it comes with a learning curve. I would say 5-25 hours of working with it, but it can make a big difference if you really need it. More than anything, it's a good way to better understand bass.

Can you do a 10-5000 sweep to show you room curve above the the subs output? Also when I play a test tone seems to play through the frequencies much faster then you, is there a setting in REW that controls this?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
The "Length" setting in the measurement menu changes the speed of the measurement. You can do a sweep from 0 to 20,000 hertz. I haven't delved into it, but there is a way to measure independent speakers. The way I showed is just a mono signal (I believe so anyway), so it measures everything together, though I need to see how much of that is going to the surrounds. Measuring it all together like this gives you a full picture of potential cancellations when everything is working together. If you measure just the subs, you won't see how they react in regular use when the mains have an effect.
@ericshutter5305

Wrong. 2 files are included with that mic: 1. 90 degree file for calibration with mic point up. and not to the speakers. 2. the standard file for calibration aimed to speakers.

Quick question (not related to your video) : I'd like to purchase my second PB 1000 when I get some funds to complete my 11' x13' theater room. (It's well treated with superchunk bass traps). My question is whether a PB 2000 that digs deeper a few hz make any significant difference compared to two PB 1000s. Does a 3 or 4 hz make a huge impact or no? Also, would two PB 1000s in my small room be able to be completely flat all the way to 19 hz? Thanks so much for all your helpful articles and videos.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
The PB-1000's started to trail off a little in my room at about 21 hertz, which could have been my room correction too, but it was still good to 19 hertz before they really fell off. I really love the PB-2000's. They drop down to 14 hertz in room for me before trailing off, something I could only tell through measurements, as I can only hear to 17 hertz. You also get more power, which adds realism and headroom. All of that said, if dual PB-2000's are out of reach, the dual PB-1000's are still going to deliver wonderfully. I could easily live with Dual PB-1000's the rest of my life, they wouldn't be on "The List" if that weren't the case. In that small of the room, you won't likely run into output issues. The PB-2000's will be a little more "sure footed", as is generally the case when you increase power, all other things being equal. 100%, without a doubt, dual PB-1000's will sound better than a single PB-2000. And I wouldn't mix and match either, I've had nothing but trouble trying to run different subwoofers together. There are people with dedicated theaters more than twice the size as yours running dual PB-1000's who why anyone would need more. In fairness, more is fun... Lastly, if you bought your PB-1000 from SVS within the last year, you could take advantage of their trade up, and the full $500 would be applied to dual PB-2000's. Even if it was a refurbished unit from their outlet, the full price you paid would go toward the new subs. In either case you'd have to cover the shipping, but it it's still a pretty awesome perk. www.subwoofer101.com/pb-1000-vs-pb-2000/

I had a question about your set up with the REW. How did you get your AVP to play one sub at a time? I have a Marantz 8802 and I followed what you did and plugged an HDMI into the Aux port on the front. I am using a miniDSP 2x4. When I run a test my mains and both subs are playing. I must be missing something.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
+Jerry Sobel You want both subs to play to get an accurate measurement. That said, if you want to measure one subwoofer at a time, just turn one subwoofer off using the switch on the subwoofer itself. Your output for your subwoofers on the Marantz should be mono, which is good, and it means that even if you only play one channel, both subwoofers should get the signal.
@JBSpine007
@JBSpine007 6 лет назад
So do run both subs from one output on the Marantz? It sounds like you run both at the same time and correct the one curve for the miniDSP. Is that right? One problem I cannot solve is that when I run the signal through my Marantz I also get the mains running the same low frequency sweep.

+Jerry Sobel You want the mains to be active because that's how it will function under normal operation. Any cancellations will be present, allowing you to "deal with them". I found that adding 3-4 feet to the subwoofer distance helps. If you measure without the mains, you may not measure the cancellations. What you need to know is that your miniDSP 2x4 adds delay and reduces the signal a bit. It's a good idea to run room correction with the 2x4 in bypass (no EQ at all) which should give you more distance than you had before. So if your subwoofer was 12 feet before, it would likely register at 15 feet or something like that. That's ok. When trying to iron out the cancellations, try adding 3-4 feet to the distance Audyssey sets the subwoofers at with the miniDSP in the loop. You might get as much as 10 feet over actual distance because of the delay from the DSP in the subwoofer and the 2x4. I just wouldn't go over 5 feet of the post 2x4 Audyssey setting. I did that and got some irritation in my ears.

The PB-16 is a lot of things. Compact it not one of them! Maybe I'm weird for saying this, or perhaps a little desensitized (most likely!), but it doesn't seem that bad. The WEIGHT, on the other hand, is mind boggling. That thing is DENSE! Of course it still has the standard feet for now. With isolation it will gain another inch or so.

Were these measurements done at the main listen position or they were in front of the sub? at what master volume level were these set to (-30dB-20dB,-15dB..ect..) thanks
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
+Hieu Le They were taken at the main listening position, at -25 DB on the master volume.

Thanks, i did the measurement at the sub location and main listen position. The frequency response at the MLP was about 20db lower than at the sub location in a dedicated theater room with no open. I moved the sub to different locations but it didn't help much. Whats would your recommendation? Do you think i should get another sub? or room acoustic response is the source of my problem and I need to get that fix first?

+Hieu Le Ok, that's a pretty good sub as I understand it, so getting a second one would improve your response, and be better all around than a single. If you're on Facebook, you can follow my page and send me your graphs, I'm curious what the response looks like.

I just bought a UMIK-1 yesterday. I wish i had known about your link, to help you out.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
I really appreciate that! You can follow any of my Amazon links right before future purchases and it will usually count. Some purchases don't count, but generally most things on Amazon are commission-able. You don't have to buy the item in the link, you could follow the Umik-1 link and buy a Blu Ray or a power cable, and it would still count. I'm not saying you should go find something else to buy just for my benefit, but clicking one of my links before an Amazon order can help. I've even heard of other RU-vid creators asking people to put their links in their favorites or home page. I have no idea how well that works, but I do need to be clearer about how affiliate links work. If someone thinks they have to sift through and find a particular link, I could see how that would seem too complicated.

nice vid, your spl seems to to off by around 10db, and also there's no way dual pb1000s can hit 120 db at any frequency.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
10 db to high or too low? I test at -25 on the volume dial, while it should be -20 or so. That was for comfort's sake initially, and now for continuity, which would land my graphs a little lower than most. The PB-1000's can get pretty loud in room in pairs in an enclosed room. Got quite a bit higher than 120 db, but that was also using some of the mains' output as well. This was when I was first measuring using Room EQ Wizard. It still could have gone louder, the dial wasn't pegged. Graph looked terrible, but it was loud. Took 2-3 weeks for my ears to get back to normal. I have no reason to believe the measurement is not accurate, nor do I claim it's impossible. I've heard 140+ db before, and it was just as painful. facebook.com/subwoofer101/photos/rpp.1498339940466955/1678438485790432/?type=3&theater

Subwoofer 101 after seeing your Facebook page you seem to be way to high in spl on rew, I think you need to use an spl meter and calibrate rew as I had the same issue when I first started using it. As for high spl hurting your ears its the higher frequencies that dont have to get to high in spl to really hurt. I have 10 10" drivers and 3 pc13 ultras in a 1900cf room and can not hit the numbers your pb1000s did, your getting 15 db more output than I can at full tilt.
@jdub2354
@jdub2354 7 лет назад
Subwoofer 101 Also you should be setting your avr to 00db and using rew to set to -30 and you should get 75db mains and 85db on lfe.

Not for anything else but for practical reasons it is a difference between the dollars in my pocket and what my ears tell me. There is definitely a difference in the graph indeed. But will my ears tell the difference, perhaps, perhaps its ok enough? An issue perhaps if I've calibrated it like I were a scientist and a friend tells me he doesn't like it, even if I do, then back to sound and music being subjective? Anyways . . . why not if money going out of my ears?

I use it more to confirm what my ears tell me, sometimes a better graph does not mean better sound, but you can avoid bad settings by check with Room EQ Wizard. I use it to check for problems.

T B I’m not for sure how Audyssey works but, YPAO (Yamaha) you can copy your “flat” AutoEQ filters to manual and add PEQ filters as needed to the room correction. You absolutely can benefit from using REW. You can learn how each subs phase is interacting together, fixing delays to even the entire FR, integrate the subs with the mains, fix any reverberations using the waterfall graph. If you want a truly flat graph you need to measure and fix your subs. It’s not hard once you experiment with it. Google AustinJerrys REW Guide, it’s on AVSForums. Very useful information and you will be able to easily follow his instructions as to what each measurement does and how to correct it. Good luck my friend. It’s a road well worth traveling.

Gerard, not in practice, unless you are trying to find compression. It was a mistake when I was first learning the software, literally first hour of learning the software. I don't think 85 dB needs to be a hard limit either, I get over 90 dB regularly. I generally measure where I tend to listen most, not a bad way to go. E Barbie: Who hurt you?
