Rope Cord Supplies Mikko Snellman Ropeworks Review. Basically in this video you will be staring at a box and watching me open it. For most viewers you will want to slash your wrists after about a minute 😉 However, for those of you that are interested in obtaining "Belfast Cord" quality then this is the video to watch. In the box is some of the finest rope that I have ever had the privilege to handle! For those of you that do traditional knotting, then this is the rope that you really do want to use. All the cords are natural ranging from cotton to good old polished hemp. With this rope you will be able to make beautiful crafted knots such as the Turks Head or Star Knot.
The rope is made by Mikko Snellman, who is a real master craftsman in the art of rope making.

I feel like I was sitting with you on Christmas morning. Thanks for sharing your package/gift opening. I remain hopeful I can secure a couple of Mikko’s tools and lengths of cordage. I received some material from Philip in Australia, but WOW it was HARD laid.! I join the ranks of many in mourning the demise of Belfast Cord. Best, Vernon

Dear John, Fantastic videos! Your stuff is brilliant! Thank you for doing this. Just what I've been looking for! Just watched your video of the opening of Mikko Snellman's sampler. I was as excited as you were. I think I may have jumped up and down a bit. What an amazing selection, and such beautiful stuff. Here to for I have only been able to get the good hard laid tarred marline from Bill Rickman at American Rope and Tar. Love the smell. Wonderful chap, and excellent resource here in the USA. Looking forward to watching your other videos, and buying Mr. Snellman's fine products. All the best John

Really nice to see you take the time and showcase Mikko's rope. I've made a few things using his cordage and I can attest to the high quality, and durability too! I made a lighthouse key fob using one of Mikko's tutorials, and the guy I gave it to was thrilled to get it. After using Mikko's cordage it's hard to pick up any other kind of cordage for projects. Also totally impressed with the chest beckets he makes - superb! Thanks for presenting this video Johnny.

Maybe as I get better I'll post some photos on my own page. Every time I follow someone's RU-vid tutorial I realize just how much a beginner I really am.

I really enjoy your videos. I bought a bit of Mikko's cordage and his bell rope kit. they are amazing. Being in the U.S.A. I was concerned about shipping, but that was a non-issue. I am new to knotting. I began with paracord but wanted to try something a little different. I then began using store bought cotton and liked it a little better, but the comparison to Mikko's cordage is night and day. I am expecting a second shipment from him any day now. HE also answers emails rather quickly and is very helpful with any questions. Keep up the good work.

Look at a couple pictures on my FB page. One item in particular is the star knot. I was having trouble doing it right. I asked Mikko if he could make a video of his and he obliged. Then I saw that I was making a silly little mistake. I also completed his bell rope kit and I believe there is a photo of that on my page also. If knot, pun intended, I'll post one. I agree that his cordage makes any knot look unbelievably good. The texture and sharpness of every knot is greatly enhanced.

Brilliant, just sent you a friend request. Ah yes, the star knot, I avoided that one for years. I now really enjoy tying that one, however, when it comes to tightening it up, I always have to think really hard where the cord goes to pull up the next bit of slack. You appear now to be a master of the Star. The star knot is a classic example of how a knot looks better done with natural cord rather than paracord.

I started knotting as a necessity as a young man in Boy Scouts. We were not allowed to use the fancy tension devices and joining devices in our troop. In fact, one of the first things we had to do was tie a keeper loop for our camping cups so we could put them on our belts. It was good for us all to learn how to do that. Out of having to learn that I had a love of knotting. I did not practice much again until just a few years ago when I got into tying with paracord. I will 100% agree with you that nothing feels like natural cordage. I will also say that about tools. I had 10 to 1 rather have my hand-made fids and needles than to have any metal ones. There is just something about working good cotton cord with a wooden fid. Nothing quite like it in the world. Thaks for the video and review. Talking about the little extra that he does, whether you noticed or not, all of those swatches were tied onto the card with Matthew Walker knots. That, my friend, is attention to detail.

Yes, I did later notice that little additional attention to detail. Often when I look back at a nice object that I have made and recall all the things that went on around me as I made it. The feel of the cord and the tools, the warmth of the sun if I sat outside and of course my dog snoring! What country are you in?

This cord looks excellent, I've just viewed Mikko's website as to ordering some for a project. Are his prices per 10m hank or per meter? If the prices represent a 10m hank, they seem a bargain.

hi Johnny, enjoying your videos. just started knotting and I ordered a few dyi kits from Mikko. I am impressed with the quality of the rope and I've been saving it in for the same reason. I don't want to waste it. It took about 2 weeks to receive my order in California, USA. By the way, no translater on your computer? 😉

@@KnottingKnots No, it is my first time I give a reaction. I enjoy watching your video's!!! For me rope knots have solved lots of problems at my work if the proper tools aren't available. Johnny, what did you actually order? 1 #6 red cotton, 1 #6 Linen, 1 #6 Flax? Why cotton v. Linen v. Flax? Characteristics, strength, etc ... I didn't see that discussion on Mikko's site. Perhaps I missed it.

To be honest when it comes to decorative rope work, my main concern is a natural fibre and the lay of the cord. I insist on a fairly hard lay, as it is easier to work with and also gives the knots a lovely profile. Mikko spends his life knotting so rather than stipulate what fibre you want, just tell him what project you are doing. You will end up with the best cord for the job. Sorry I can not be more specific, as I really do not remember what the conversation was, I probably said just send me something nice and a specific thickness?? Decorative knotting is a secondary interest. I occasionally run across projects where functional rope/cord work can be enhanced with a decorative feature. Simple example that led me to Mikko's site, and, by extension, back to your site: Learned my mother-in-law has a crude jury-rigged way to turn on/off a remote basement pull-chain ceiling light involving wire directly strung & wrapped to a nail hammered into a stud next to the basement door ... hahaaa. I'm replacing it with a more elegant jury-rig involving static cordage, eyelet screws for more appropriate routing, and a decorative cord pull by the door. My search for cord pull ideas led me to Mikko's classic bellrope design. I tied the bellrope keyfob with paracord, which will work fine for this application. It's just not as attractive and polished as would be if I used Mikko's beautiful cord. There are other more visible small projects, e.g. a string of Christmas bells, turksheading my small forest axe neck, etc. where I could use high quality cordage ... unfortunately I haven't found an American source, so I may order some from Mikko. Also have an eye on that "spid" tool ;^)

Johnny Debt i live in the Netherlands and Naturale rope is super expensive! so Paracord is the easiest. Although what i understand Mikko isn't that expensive. and i want one of those marlin spikes. 😀

I was always remember that good, reasonably price cord came from the Netherlands. It looks like they are also pricing themselves out of the market. I have some work on my instagram account. Last thing i did was a turkshead knot on my hatchet that cord was real used paracord. My grandfather had a little business repairing parachutes. And when he had some old cord i would get that cord. I still have some.

I just love that! Nothing better than having something with a bit of history behind it. I often use old rope and I always try to get the history behind the rope. If it is passed on, I always try to attach a note about the history of the piece. If you don't mind send me your instagram link?

Paracord is great however, it is awful for anything that carries sentiment. This hard laid cord just creates beautiful results. I have watched Mikko's videos and it produced a search by me to find cordage in the US. I found none, not even in the warehouse superstores. So, on a trip to the coast, I tried there to find decent cordage. Nope. Tried online and results were sketchy. Asked Mikko direct and he recommended synthetic in lieu of natural, which is okay, but not near as good. To top that, you can have it in any color, as long as its white. I did find some natural color cotton cord which was slightly larger than thread, but its made in China and quality is sketchy as best which is to be expected based on how cheap it was, nor is it hard laid. 165 feet for $4 US. Now that I see your video, I see an order being placed soon. Until then, the search continues...

Yes, trying to find quality cord is so difficult. Another problem you will find is, once you get some, you will save it for very special projects. The sentiment is really huge when it comes to using quality stuff. When I hold my ditty bags, I remember how frustrating it was, the warm days sat outside making it and my last dog who would sit with me in the quiet.
