John Terry, without a doubt. As good as Rio was, he wasn't a brave centre half, scored very few headed goals and didn't go that extra mile/throw himself in front of anything aimed as his goal.

Rory asked why Sol Campbell isnt considered here. Well Sol was a monster, from a physical pov stronger than both Terry and Ferdinand, as dominant in the air as either, from a top speed pov probably quicker than Rio, not in the shorter distances since Sol didn't have the best acceleration but was very fast once at full speed. Bravery wise he would throw himself in front of everything, his anticipation was fantastic. From a 1 vs 1 defensive pov as good, possibly better than Ferdinand. But the biggest disparity when comparing him to JT or Rio was when Sol was in possession. Receiving the ball he was nowhere near as comfortable as JT or Rio, nor was his passing range as accurate or as confident as them either. You could unsettle Sol if you pressed aggressively, where as Rio and JT were much more composed in that situation. I love Sol, I have his name on the back of my 04/05 Arsenal shirt but I also wont let that bias effect my opinion on who the better defenders were which I think it's JT and Rio. He was very comparable in most of their qualities except in possession which is such an important factor in the overall makeup of a defender.

As a United fan, I have to grudgingly admit it's Terry. Not only was he a beast of a defender and a great passer, I can't tell you how many times Terry would pop up with a headed goal in the last 10 minutes of a 0-0 game in a way Rio never did.

Rio was the greatest, he had everything. He was great then and would even suit todays game. John was great too, but not as good IMO. Rio could play any system in any country against any type of player.

Terry placed behind some of the best DM’s in prem history. Makelele, Essien and a young Matic. If he played a high-level he’d be toast. For England internationally he got rinsed. Quality player but as a pure defender behind Desailly, Stam, VVD, Kompany etc etc.

Only thing that splits them is the goals scored... So i understand why people would select Terry over Rio. BUT i believe Rio is a BETTER defender...

I’m a Chelsea fan, so probably looks biased, but I truly believe in the past 30 years, it’s this: 1. Terry 2. Adams 3. Rio 4. Vidic 5. Van Dijk I think it was ludicrous of this guy to say “I think Rio read the game better than Terry”!!!!! Rio was as quick as any attackers for all of his prime. Terry and Adams were never gifted with any pace. In the air, Terry and Adams were leaps and bounds better than Ferdinand. That’s the difference in my top 5 between Rio/VVD compared to Terry, Adams and Vidic. The first two were lucky to have been gifted with unbelievable defensive qualities, but also alongside god given electric pace for big centre halves. So it makes the other three even more impressive as defenders, that they were on this level, with arguably no pace. The longevity at the very top with Terry and Adams is also undeniable and insane.

Vvd was the best cb ever for 3 seasons. Hes untouchable for those 3 years. Its just not long enough to be considered the best premier league cb ever. Terry for me

As a United-fan I have to say Terry. I hated how difficult a time our players had against him. Never seemed to have a mistake in him. As good as I thought Rio was I always felt he had a mistake in him and that he relied a bit on playing with Vidic. Terry was amazing no matter who he played along side with, I felt.

I like Terry, but i just think there were a few defenders better than him. He's a great leader and fearless defender, on par with Adams. BUT, I would put Rio, Staam, Campbell, Vidic, Kompany, VVD and (even) Carvalho, all above Terry, not in an particular order.

There's only one God and that's Paul McGrath. VVD had that incredible season but hasn't been the same for a couple of years now and he's not had to face the striking talent that was around 20+ years back. Defenders really had to be able to defend. There are maybe a dozen genuinely good defenders in the division these days.

Honestly as a united fan i could make a good argument for either of rio or terry being the best. Both were absolutely awesome. There were times when terry was an absolute wall and some of those seasons they conceded so few goals it was ridiculous. Same for rio when united broke chelseas (iirc) record they had recently set for number of clean sheets or goals conceded. Terry was also a brilliant passer and scored a lot. Both were great. I also thought sol campbell, adams, kolo toure, vincent Kompany, vidic and stam were great. So many others too just cba to name them all.

Rio >> Terry. Both elite defenders but difference is, Terry would throw himself at a shot to save a goal. Rio would have shut the player down before he could shape up for a shot. Both do the job but Rio reads the game better. Ask any top defender, top defenders do not slide tackle often IF at all. If you're diving about blocking shots, 2 things are wrong. (1) Your teammates are letting you down. (2) Your read the situation too late. Rio is the better defender. Not by much but he is. Facts.

Both players were excellent for English defenders but neither are worthy of carrying Franco Baresi's jockstrap, whose game I.Q was levels ahead of them.
