The Rosemary plant is one of the most asked about plant in my social media accounts. So much love for this herb but they need a little extra care if they are grown in weather that is both sunny and wet at the same time.
This video will take you through the tips in caring for Rosemary if you are living in the tropics.

I just want to say thank you for being direct and straight to the point unlike the many videos I've watched on how to care for rosemary plants. They waste so much of the viewer's time on unnecessary/irrelevant intros, music, stories, or jokes. With that aside, I'm trying to grow rosemaries from two groups and one group is dying while the other is thriving. They are all about 3-4 inches in height. Group A was bought from local supermarket store (for cooking) and is thriving but progressing slowly. i wonder if it's because I started planted them last December. The other is unlucky group B which I got from a local neighbor who gave out rosemary trimmings from their garden. Group B was planted in January. Today majority of group B plants have died even though they share the same plant bed as group A. Started with 10 trimmings and now I'm down to 3 left from group B and they look like they're going to all die out. Maybe it's because I over watered them based on the brown tip of the leaves, but Group A, on the other hand, seems to be sprouting nicely as I can see new small leaves growing. I don't water them every day. I try to water them every other day - sometimes skip watering 2-3 days if it's foggy or cloudy. It doesn't rain in my area often. I live on top of a hill where it's a mix of sun and fog. I juts want to know how to read rosemary behaviors without having to buy all these gadgets to measure the soil, etc.

Thank you for the support... I try to be precise because I dont have much to say other than my plant stuff lol! i think you are doing great! experimenting is the way to go and you will be be an amazing grower in no time. Yes rosemary is a little finicky and because the weather conditions around us differ, the care for the plant can't really be the same for all of us. But the key thing to do is to always gauge their basic needs...rosemary should get more sun than water so... by skipping the watering every 2-3 days is the way to go! But in the mean time, ensure it gets the sun it needs. If you can balance both these together...the rosemary will thrive :)

despite all the internet advice not to over-water your Rosemary or else it will die. i found the opposite, my rosemary dead because i'm afraid to over-water it, despite watering it every week. now i dip the cuttings into water for weeks without any problem and it even rooted. guess it just hate constantly wet and non-airy soil, but it loves water(on its root).
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday 2 года назад
The rot is caused by water + soil in the pot. Thats why if you use well draining soil it will give the roots enough air pockets. In fact if you watch my video on growing plants in water you will realise tht plants dont rot in water unless the water is contaminated.. but in soil the same plant will rot instantly due to the soil and pathogens and microorganisms largely. I've grown snake plants in water and nothing has ever rot :)

I grow rosemary hydroponically and it's doing way better than my (dead) soil rosemary. 😂 It's also suprisingly easier and not as demanding as when I grew it on soil. I only need to keep the water temperature low and aerate it to avoid root rot.
@losenikromah7802
@losenikromah7802 2 года назад
You are right, rosemary actually loves water and organic matter with aerobic microbes in the soil. It hates when the water and organic matter is standing in the sun until it becomes an anaerobic environment. The reason rosemary dies in the tropics is that water pools in the soil and gets hot, suffocating and cooking the roots. unlike the high altitudes that the plant is native to, where the rain comes in fine mists and drizzles and the soil drains fast, leaving only residual water.

@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday 2 года назад
Hi! Thanks for asking this is quite a crucial subject matter for rosemary. Tropical weather means a lot of rain and that is high risk for the rosemary. So adding drainage materials into your pot to drain water quickly is important. I personally do not hv a regimented recipe but my main focus is increase drainage . U can use the combo you mentioned test it to see how fast water goes in and out. I suggest to replace the peatmoss with compost.

Hi! I've not used coffee grounds enough to make a conclusive statement on it but there are many positive text about it. The one concern i have for coffee grounds is the high acidity, it may alter soil ph. Perhaps using it on acid-loving plants would be right. I would suggest tht you dry the coffee grounds first otherwise it will cause fungus and mold. You can leave the coffee grounds in the fridge for a few days...the coffee will dry out nicely

I am fr the Phil, and Ihave a healthy rosemary plant, bit my previous plants were healthy until I prune them. After some cuttings, white spots appeared on the leaves, and eventually they rurn to brown, and affect the whole plant. Why os this so? Thank you for sharing your tips.
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday 2 года назад
hi there! to me any kind of white spots that are not powdery or in any tangible form, meaning the spots are within the leaf itself sounds like the work of leaf sucking insects. It could be spider mites, aphids or thrips and these will damage the plants. It is a very common problem with rosemary and some herbs though. Both spider mites and aphids are detectable... just check for insects or webs under the leaves. However for thrips, they are less detectable as they move and fly around. I've had this experience before where my entire rosemary plant had these white spots and eventually the plant dies. As for leaves browning, it could also indicate overwatering.

Make sure the Rosemary stays mostly dry and keep it on a windowsill if you can so it still gets sun. It needs 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day. Only water it once every 1-2 weeks or when the surface of the soil is dry. Also it needs nutrient rich soil, as well as a layer of mulching (wood chips, or gravel) for good drainage. It’s like a cactus so you don’t have to mess with it often. Just make sure when you water it you don’t overwater it or the roots will rot. A light misting will do

Hi there. Thank you for visiting :). Hmm my rosemary never flowered too so i am not the best person to answer this. But a roseMary should eventually bloom once it is matures and when the environmental conditions are right. Usually if it's not flowering likely your soil is very high in nitrogen so it's a happy healthy leafy plant. Cut back on fertilizer and give it lots of sun. Once it's in the right condition it will naturally bolt and flower.

@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday 2 года назад
Hello. You are right it holds water but technically it does a marvellous job in balancing out excess water too. My understanding is that it keeps just enough moisture for the roots and does not pull up water. This way the roots will have enough air to breath. The other common tip is you can add perlite to the cocopeat.

I’m from Malaysia and I’ve killed every rosemary plant I’ve ever owned by following the advice of experts who say rosemary comes from a dry Mediterranean climate and only water sparingly into a well draining soil. Over the years I’ve killed many rosemary plants by doing exactly that. Recently I had the exact opposite advice from another channel from a horticulturalist from Cairns, Australia, which is to keep the soil damp by watering as often as once every day or every 2 or 3 days. I really am confused.
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday
@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday 2 года назад
hi! sorry to hear that I do struggle with rosemary too. I always have problems when the rainy season comes here in Malaysia. My rosemary will go. And this happens all the time after several good months of flourishing rosemary... because the rain and wet potting medium means the soil is always moist and do not have a chance to dry out. I believe if your potting medium is very porous and well draining, having more water in your rosemary will not likely to kill it. But however if your potting medium is always wet, it will be a problem. It should dry out first before the next watering. Unfortunately if there is lots of rain, the chances are the rosemary will suffer. That's usually my problem.
@ALong-fo5so
@ALong-fo5so 2 года назад
@@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday Thanks for the tip. Yep part of my problem is the plant will be happy for a few weeks. Slowly but surely I will notice the tips turning brown first and then spread across the rest of the plant. But I’m a sucker for punishment. I will try again with a very porous soil mix of leica, rice husk and compost, play around with the composition and see what happens.

For soil, Rosemary seems to love "Tanah sawit" its like sandy black soil, i mix with little bit clay native soil, to hold water abit and Malaysia soil is very Fertile they say haha. And If plant big enough make sure to start/propogate right away. Also when the plant looks dying, just cut fresh cutting and propogate, stick in pot, until its "risen" or die lose all leaves
@JuanMiro507
@JuanMiro507 9 месяцев назад
The problem is not researching well enough. So, FIRST STEP, you decided you want a rosemary, so now what!!? Before even buying the plant i recommend to research where the plant is native, learn as much as you can about the climate, rain volume, type and dept of soils, hours of sunlight, etc. SECOND STEP. Replicate as much as you can those conditions. Pretty simple. See, some people in Australia can tell you to do that because maybe they have similar conditions of all those things i mentioned, meanwhile in other places they will tell you to avoid water as it is too tropical and humid to be doing that. In my case, i live in the tropics (rainy) and our soils are heavy clay. That combo a 100% of the time will dry out your rosemary. So what i do is simple, i use a extremely loose soil and water every other day.... The Rosemary will always recover from a drought but not from overwatering and root rot.

@@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday Fyi I've read that rosemary being a hardy plant can actually be dead inside a good amount of time before you can see any visual signs of it. I've been studying lots of rosemary content and university articles. Contrary to the common belief of what rosemary likes in it's native habitat it can actually grow in most all soils and watering amounts if they provide enough drainage/root depth and they don't completely dry out, my property rains a ton but gets good sun exposure so I added a good amount of course perlite to my native soil + potting mix mixture of maybe 25/75% and the rosemary is growing vigorously from seed. The deeper your roots are and woodier the plant the more drought resistant it will become, if you want to be a heavy pruner like your suggesting it's a good idea to have a mother plant that you let get woodier and water more often and heavy prune the offspring you make from cuttings.
