I tried this rotary blade sharpener that I bought with my own money. I so wanted to love it but it didn’t work for me.
If this or a similar product has worked for you please comment and tell me:
A) when do you sharpen your blades - a set time or when you feel yourself having to press or when you get the hanging on threads like I had?
B) Was I using this one right? Or is there another one that is easier to use that you know of?
C) Do you have any other hacks or tips for sharpening rotary blades?

Do you sharpen your rotary blades? What do you use to do it?

Normal knife sharpener. Works every time.

I've never seen these type of sharpeners actually work. I send my dull blades to LP Sharp (in the United States) and receive nicely sharpened blades in return. Probably not as cost effective if you buy new blades on sale but I like the idea of the blades not piling up in landfills.

Wish I could find somewhere near me that will sharpen them.

This is definitely an opportunity for a clever engineer to come up with a better mousetrap. Also, I want a gizmo to sharpen my seam rippers!

There seem to be plenty more expensive options on the market (for sharpening the blades) but I wouldn’t want to pay that much without knowing they worked for sure!

I have one of those and it works just fine for me. I sharpen the blade after each use. I don’t wait for the blade to get super dull. Also, I use much longer strokes than what you did. I don’t know if that makes a difference or not for the sharpening, but it did relieve a lot of hand pressure. I have arthritis, and I found the rolling one much easier to use than the ones like Colonial has. Also, if you have a nick in the blade, you need to just discard it. It won’t sharpen well.

If a thread or two isn’t being cut it could mean that there is a nick in the blade but, it could be caused by deep grooves and trapped fibres in the cutting mat.
@ScrapFabricLove

Ah…that is definitely a possibility on my mat! Thanks!

I used that device on a very blunt blade. It worked for me, but you need to roll it for a while, i used pressure when rolling too. Have used the sharpened blade for quite a time too.

I had the tru-cut sharpener and it didn't work for me either. I also tried the green disk one you have to turn by hand as well. Can't remember the brand. It didn't work. I also have the electric one. It has two sharpening stones plus oil you have to use. Still unsure about how good it works. I just know it's a pain in the neck to use. It was expensive too. I think the best option is to buy new blades. I could have bought a lot of new blades for the money I wasted on sharpeners.

I bet a small belt sander is the best way. And some heavy asf leather or Kevlar gloves

In the sharp box they are other metal parts that dull even more the blades that they are after cutting.

Watching as tried a fancy gizmo once--may try again, but will first try my stones & strops for my skiver & other blades I use for leather. I've not tossed my old blades yet, but often choice of time/cost to put in a new blade vs sharpening... And over many years have tried many brands, and Olfa by far the best! And odds are will respond the best--but it's very easy to cause more damage to a cutting edge with an incorrect method when trying to sharpen 😮.

It's difficult to find it in the UK and its a shame that they dond have made one for 60mm blades. Perhqbse someone could make one in a 3d printer for free download or to buy. 🤔🤗

I have yet to run across a rotary blade sharpener that works. Some probably do, but I haven't found one. Blades are expensive, and I probably use mine longer than I should (same with sewing machine needles), but I just look at it as life is too short. I just put in a new blade eventually. And yes, I run into that thread-skipping thing when I'm cutting, and I think it's usually a nick in the blade. I just had to change one yesterday that was doing that. It skipped a thread at even intervals, so I knew it was nicked.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove Год назад
That makes sense- good way to check if it’s a nick.

I do not have a blade sharpener. I also use my blades for a lot longer than i see most people. They are so expensive. When I was in Edinburgh last month I dragged my family to Fabric Focus only to find it wasn't open on Mondays. So I went back to My Bear Paw and bought a fat eighth bundle. What a fabulous city is Edinburgh.

I bought one a long time ago. My hubby suggested that I should do using it frequently rather than when the blade got dull. That is to keep it sharp rather than try and sharpen it after it got blunt. I gave up and decided I would just keep buying blades; admittedly not the best blades.

I get his point but it is a lot of hassle to have to remember to do that all the time. Oh well at least we tried!

I read a review, they said to sharpen after every project. Easier to keep sharp than rescue. Also a word of advice from a person who cooked a lot. Keep the dull blades protected. A dull blade vs a blade tossed in with other blades and knicked are two different stories. That's why chef knives have sheaths all the time. Dull or not, u don't want to knick it. I'm a crocheter and knitter and learning to sew finally. I haven't gotten a rotary cutter yet. Doing research. Glad I am. I want to know if I can sharpen them or not. The Omni sharpener is another gadget like this that supposedly works good. They recommend a little oil on the sharpen stone. That would help probably. Keep them sharp and seperate is my advice from a chef.

I'm aboit to buy this because I have more than 20 dull blades now. I just feel guilty if those end in landfills. But knowing the sharpener doesn't work like that, I guess I will just postone my purchase

I had a blade sharpener several years ago but I gave it to a Charity Shop for resale since it didn't work for me. I don't remember the brand (in the US) I wish there was an easy effective way to sharpen rotary blades. New blades are expensive and I dislike throwing the old ones in the trash.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove Год назад
Exactly! Hate throwing them out when I know the the right tool could probably save them. I’d even pay to take them in somewhere to get sharpened if I could find somewhere.
