So awesome..we have all been I. This situation asking ourselves who can I call...and he can just call up cleetus while I'm over here looking for Bill with a mullet lol
"always" , not really... But I guess he can make time but now its a lot of work for the drag and drive events and also Idaho trip with the jet boats and so on .
Some tips and info. Your axle is a simifloat, hence the bolts at the end of the axle tube. Full float axles have bolts for the axle shaft on the very end of the hub. Big trucks use those kind. C clip axles are like what was said in the vid, but youll never see that with a 3rd member because you cant axcess the c clips. 9in diff is stonger than 8.8 because the pinion is supported by a bearing on both sides of the pinion gear and ofcourse the ring gear difference adds strength. prussian blue works but actual yellow gear marking compound is definitely better. Your gear pattern is set by your pinion depth. Back lash will effect it slightly but major changes will be in pinion depth. The spanners are what you're calling the shims. Calling them shims is fine really but you know the internet. Spanners set your backlash as well as your bearing preload. Setting preload on tape bearings is just as critical as backlash. Since you took your pinion nut off you'll also need to set pinion preload and possibly put in a new crush sleeve unless it's shim style pinion gear. Pinion preload differs with new vs old bearings. Hope that helps
I forgot to mention the spanners are threaded. Set your bearing caps, hand tighten and Turn the spanners by the holes to adjust. If you torque your caps you won't be able to adjust the spanners.
He’s made this diff considerably worse in this video it’s hilarious hahaha. Think a ford 9” is hard try a Nissan r200 where you need to surface grind tool steel shims to set backlash preload and pinion height etc
Seeing Adam have absolutely no idea what’s going on is absolutely hilarious to me. I don’t think he realized the adjustment for backlash was threaded not just grooves lol. I hope the diff hold together and doesn’t just blow apart
I'm 49 years old and I know less about this than you do; even though a rotary Rx3 was the first proper petrol head car I ever hooned around in when I was a teenager. I love fast cars, but I'm a electronics guy and know my way around a circuit extremely well, but mechanics? no idea, never really fooled around with it. I love that you are doing this and I gotta say; I already liked you mate, but the fact you are willing to just feel your way through this live on youtube, without GAF about the old boys in the comments, makes me appreciate you even more.
Adam will Flex on you not even realizing it. This whole time I was thinking “why not just look it up on RU-vid” takes it one step further and calls the RU-vidr 🤯
Adam..... everyone does this when they don't know. Its awesome. Ive been learning for 40 years of wrench turning. This aint the BS ShadeTreeMech show were everything was pre loosened and edited perfect. 100 content! Keep it real.
The amount of stuff I learned from you and Cletus and Sam and everybody in the car industry on RU-vid is amazing I love watching Adam he's so entertaining
Dude, respect to Cleet to walk you on elementary stuff for ‘merican drivetrain, but imagine those people learning about 4 rotor JDM nuggets as fast as you did about that 9” axle 😅 Good stuff! Loving this “non-build” datsun. ❤
Love these type of build! I had one of these , hopefully I’ll see you at a track one day racing for fun. I’m working on a s10 many blessing to you and all your builds
This has been one of the most fun and genuine videos ive seen on the channel lately and you being a little out of your comfort zone really made me connect and wanna see success! Nice work.
This is the best ever, I have a Mazda R100 and a 9 inch watching you try to pull it apart I was like yelling at the screen trying to guide ya.. keep it up brother love what you do
You should get some no prep traction compound to really get those tires to stick! Also, I'd love to see a trip to the drag strip to see what this little monster can run in the quarter!
Cleeter is such a stand up guy he probably would help a thief break into his house. Even helped with tips for a wheelie. “ Throw some sand bags in the back and send it brother.” Adam looked like a kid at Christmas pulling the axles out. Isn’t the pitman arm attached to the steering box and idler arm is on the passenger side? Holy low tire pressure Batman. Adam needs to do a giveaway and the winner gets to come down and rage on the Navy Bean. That front bumper needs some super glue. It’s friendly and waving at us. At least Cleeter didn’t jinx em with the ole “ I can’t think of a single thing that could go wrong.” Excellent video Adam. I need the Navy Bean.
That’s the idler arm. People can custom turn bearings to put in the idler arm so it doesn’t wear from heat. Turn some brass on the lathe to fit and add a zerk fitting and just grease it every so often. Also maybe coat the down pipe for good luck lol
Hahahahaha 😂🤣 im dying laughing watching this. Adam not every one has worked on these type drivetrain. So screw it you have to learm but thannyou for not cutting away the best content this year so far
Drive shaft angle isn't what matters , it's having matching pinion angles so if the transmission is at a 2 degree angle the diff should also be at 2 degrees . You should see the angle of the drive shafts on a lifted Jeep , that's some crazy angle .
I bet you if you let yohan drag launch that thing he would get it to lift off. The combination of him being puerto rican and that big head of his swinging inside the car, surely the front end will lift right up
Lol, this is genuinely funny content. I've never worked on a rear end, and I knew from watching car shows growing up that you didn't need to pull anything you did, and that you had to pull the axels. I was always one of the forum guys who defended 'dumb questions' because no one is born knowing anything, much less everything. This car is not high up on my list of interests but the videos have been great.
Ive been doing rear diff repairs and builds for 30yrs, everybody starts somewhere so i will never criticize somebody not knowing about everything. Thats simply not in your normal wheelhouse of what you work on and thats fine, its not what you know its that you know where to get the info to get it done. From the beginning when i saw the 9” i was like…..yea he’s probably going to fk something up….and was talking you thru it the whole time but you didnt listen😂. Main thing is you got it done and learned something different.
So, I'm gonna be one of those guys in the comments. But just for a moment haha. I've grown up working on Fords and own a few. Also a "posi" is for GMs. All that out of the way, this was so entertaining. Especially Cleeter laughing at the shenanigans. Super hyped about this build!!!
The car using a pitman steering system was cool, I only really heard about them in class and from the guys in the heavy-duty trucking class from my college.
I'm watching while I wreak of diff fluid, I have been working a Ford 8.8 all day to sway into my jeep. Loved watching you fight the 3rd member before being laughed at by cleetus😂 By the way, I'm a Missourian
This little Datto looks really fun.. Ive seen a few with 13B transplants done here in Aus. I used to have a 79 Mazda 626 (the RWD ones) that i upgraded with 13B Rotary .. Awesome little car, they actually have the same running gear as the first series RX7s (FB).. To run it with a Rotary, I used a cut down RX4 single piece drive shaft. Worked well but the only real issue it had was it chopped out UV joints all the time.. Suggest just checking them regularly as I found out the hard way what happens when one snaps..
That was Hilarious im glad Cleetus got a laugh out of it too 😂 i must find one my old car magazines for you Adam, they explained atlas axels and English axels all the jargen 😂
35:20 started out cringing watching the hammers while the axle still in... Then when the shimming without the bearing caps, car still does burnouts and doesn't send the stank oil all over the compound. Like reverse Murphy's law, if you did it all "wrong" you cant be disappointed. Everything worked out and everyone in the video had the gigles. Loved this one.
I grew up with muscle cars, hot rods, and trucks (+ carburetors). All of it seems so much simpler to me than what you usually work on. I knew as soon as you said you were calling cleetus that he was going to get a good laugh.
Adam LZ Awesome Video I think it's awesome that Cleetus give you advice on how to remove your Datsun 1200s 9 inch diff and Congratulations on getting it to do a couple small wheelies
