Rough running, low power P0102 P0340: '97 Chevy S10

This old Chevy pickup might look rough, but it is a key player on the local farm. The owner said it has been running rough, especially in the mornings.
So what's the problem? Distributor cap? Fuel pump? Spider injection system? MAF sensor? None of the above? Let's find out!
Enjoy!
Ivan

Ivan I want to thank you for saving me over $1200. I watched your vid on airbag passengers seat sensor, and it was the exact problem I had with my Kia Sodona. The stealer wanted $1350 for a new seat, and I got in contact with the sensor company you used and fixed it for$60.00! I can't thank you enough. Love your channel, as well as Eric's. Keep doing what your doing. You'll be a great success.

If the truck runs crappy when cold, and gets better as the engine warms up, you may have intake gasket issues. Especially with the long term fuel trim numbers improving when revving the engine It is very common on the 4.3/5.0/5.7 engines from this era. GM's intake manifold gaskets are thin, and cheap. I have already replaced them on my 2001 S-10 4.3L with a set of Fel-Pro gaskets. Thanks GM for using crappy materials!!!! Good video though. Thanks for taking the time to film the procedure.

Damn! We need more mechanics like you in this planet. All these mechanics out there are just ripping people off. They would of told me it was my fuel pump or something major like that to charge me an arm and a leg. I dont mind paying as longest they do it right the first time.
@Thundarr995
@Thundarr995 4 года назад
The fuel pump took me 1/2 hr to change. I cut an access hole in the bed. Then I went to the junkyard and cut a panel larger than my access hole. Trimmed the panel to fit,rounded the corners because it was razor sharp. Screwed it down with self tapping sheet metal screws. Painted it with spray can bedliner. Looks good and all fixed. I did use a Delphi fuel pump $300. There's cheaper ones though. Airtex brand is alright.

Hey good video Ivan those erra gm trucks including the full size, the wiring harnes runs along the cross member for the transmission going to the down stream o2 sensors . The harness will come loose and rub the front drive shaft when in 4wd only .the front shaft won't turn in 2wd have him put the truck in 4wd and see if it blows the fuse wile driving if it does suspect the harness rubbing
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

Great tip, Mike. I didn't see any harness rub, but it's a possibility. I'm sure to hear back from the guy if it acts up again :)

I've also noticed on GM products that the first crank after a clear code or battery disconnect is extended. I assume it's just because the PCM loses its adaptive data like IAC position, fuel trims, etc. When it first happened to me, I was a little concerned too.

In 1997 my girlfriend bought a brand spanking new gold s10 extended cab pickup with the 4.3 engine, there were three to choose from, a red a green and a gold. I did all routine maintenance on it after the warranty was up she insisted on letting the dealer do oil changes etc. The only major thing to go wrong with it of course after the warranty expired was the valve body, it was shifting rough with delayed shifting, she took it to the dealer they replaced it for 1,200 and it's been good ever since, two years ago I rebuilt the front suspension two new lower control arms one had rusted to the point where the shock mounts was completely rusted away so the shock wasn't attached, after all the work it was like a new truck, she has 148,000 now never had any wiring issues, it has manual windows, she bought a nice high cap for it the following year. The first time I did a full tune up I made the mistake of using a non Delco ignition cap and rotor, I got what I thought was the best advance auto had to offer, then the problems started, it wouldn't start when it rained, it was losing power I tried another cap and rotor this time from AutoZone and still it was no good, then I did some research and found somebody who had the same identical problem so he bought a Delco cap and rotor and his problem was solved, I thought it couldn't be that simple but I had nothing to lose, that was some five years ago and since installing genuine GM parts I never had another problem, the truck starts up with a flick of the key no matter how long it's been sitting except in the winter when it's extremely cold and the oil is thick, she's never been abused the interior is like new.

I've found fuses that have blown due to age as well,my parents hot water system fuse blew at over 40 years of age in the meter box on their house & there was no fault in the hot water system or its associated circuit,I replaced the fuse wire for them with 15 amp wire. To be honest ,whoever wired the house up seemed to use 8 amp fuse wire which is for the lighting circuit in 1977 but it decided to blow this year !

I have had many of those in the past,that 1 of the 02 sensors,mainly behind the cat is intermittently shorted causing mass air fuse to blow,by simply tapping on the 1 of the 02 sensors, throwing p340 codes as well,especially the R motor 5.7 liters V8,Just saying.

Surprises me the truck even starts! The minimum fuel pressure at idle is 50 psi. One here with 48 psi wouldn't even fire off. Replaced pump and filter then spider injection system due to misfires. Note that some of these pumps ground through frame, but if factory security it may ground through pcm. Ours grounded through frame near pump, cleaned that up when we replaced the fuel pump. Never had any ign fuse blow, but I have seen other GM no starts with EMC fuse B blown which is fuel pump circuit related. Verify the accuracy of your fuel pressure gauge.

Lots of inductive loads connected to this fuse, ergo lots of current spikes, ergo lots of thermal cycles on the fuse. Expand, shrink, expand, shrink... give it a few ten thousand times and it breaks. Fuses in high fidelity, high power amplifiers last a thousand power cycles at most. Yes, they're rated for the current and are of the slow blow type, but, eventually, they just break.

Mine does the opposite.. Have an 02' Blazer Zr2 with 4.3.. Stopped at store it was running great, then came out & had a no start condition. Towed it to a shop & they said the Coil shorted out the ICM & it needed a new Distributor. Cost $700, now it starts fine, has a little power when Cold but as soon as I hit Operation Temp? It bogs down bad, no power at all. It's like no fuel or spark. I replaced the plugs, wires & Temp Sensor. Still didn't help, made it worse actually. How could it go from running great, to a no start condition, to now all these problems or am I fishing? You can twist the new distributor right & left a little, it's just like a clunk clunk type turn but does nothing to the engine. Confused! No codes besides a miss, no check engine light also.

Sometimes a $xxxx dollar scope is not the best tool. For instance on a +12 volt feed you very rarely if ever care if there is +12 volts with no load, or the scope 10 megohm input load, you want to know what you get with a tangible load, say 100 milliamps, like what a hot-wire sensor might draw. If a connector has just a smidgen of green-copper corrosion it will show 12 volts with a scope load but near zero with a real load. A 12-volt taillight on the circuit is more informative than a $xxxx dollar scope.

I wouldn't let Matt from Schrodingers Box hear you say a fuse blew from anything other than current draw. He called me every name in the book and a disgrace to my profession for suggesting a fuse can just blow from age, heat cycling and outside influences other than current draw. There is also such a thing as inrush weakening, far be it for me to even try to explain that to him, I imagine I would suffer even more insults. These fuses live in a very harsh environment and anything is possible. In my 35 years of servicing electronics I have seen open fuses that just can't be explained by anything other than "it was its time" then I got all kinds of straw man arguments about engine fires and some other non sensical stuff to the contrary coupled with more insults. You do always have that "somethings wrong" in the back of your mind but time says otherwise when it never happens again.

Hey Gary, thanks for the thoughtful comment. Well, I guess Matt S. could be correct in that the electrical current "finishes the job" of blowing the fuse, but that is because the fuse was previously weakened far below it's stated capacity. And yes, he is creative with the insults xD

Anything man made is susceptible to failure, even a fuse.

If it takes longer than an hour, do you ask the customer to authorize each additional hour ?

I give them a progress report and explain the situation. They are always very understanding.

Is there ever a limit you stop charging the customer ? For instance I hate to charge a customer for something that took me longer to figure out due to lack of experience

It's always a balance. You can't charge too much for lack of experience :)

I can't believe how bad of a reputation the Mystique has lol... Let me tell you the 4-banger Zetec with a 5-speed manual is a really cool combination. It is one of very few cars that I thoroughly ENJOY driving ;)
