Taking advantage of a break in the weather, we go for a bimble on Clementine the Royal Enfield Classic 350, along the A5074 from Gilpin Bridge to Bowness on Windermere along the Lyth Valley. Although we have ridden this route previously, it's always worth a revisit.
Considering this is an A road the surface is disgusting, and dangerous in places, due to potholes and loose gravel.
Apart from the road conditions, the ride is pleasant, with rolling hills in the foreground, and snow capped mountains in the distance.
I hope you enjoy this ride, and consider joining us on future rides by subscribing.
Thanks for watching

Thanks for the mention Ian, I enjoyed riding that road even though I couldn't see very much most of the time. I always use self amalgamating tape to keep water out, it's flexible so will remake a watertight seal against the case when you plug whatever it is back in and there's no glue to go sticky over time. The roads are just a reflection of the state of The UK in general after many years of being bled dry by the traitors in power, nothing will change until they're removed. Cheers, Mick

Thanks James, unfortunately Clementine isn’t looking her best at the moment. Next decent day, she will be get a full degrease, wash and polish (and oiling up again 🙄, as winter hasn’t finished with us yet). Those holes were jarring 🤬.

Two degrees?! Brrr - blow that for a game of tin soldiers; rather you than me, Ian! My days of riding in those conditions are thankfully long gone! I enjoyed a quiet 45 km coastal canter on the Guzzi this morning in a very pleasant 26C; much better than the 44C of last week... 👍 I agree with you about the state of your roads, especially in relation to those in Spain as shown by other people. Still, being objective, water in the road's substrate freezes, causing expansion then degredation of the surface when the ice melts, but given that cold, wet winters in the UK happen every year, one would think that the relevent authorities should have worked out an engineering solution by now. 😟

Totally agree Chris. Perhaps talking to countries who also have extreme weather conditions, like Italy for example. The Stelvio pass always looks smooth on people's vids. No excuse for the state of our roads, other than incompetent management of funding, oh, and the council management giving themselves huge wages 😠. As for the temp, it wasn't raining, had to get out 😎🤣

Great vlog Ian, just watched the missenden flyer on his long term classic, he says at the end he’ll see if his set up records the sound of the engine, it hardly does, your set up seems great to me, audio clear and clearly picking up the sound of that lovely engine 👍🏻

Nice one Ian always a better ride in the sunshine even when the roads are in crap order, I reckon in time they will only be fit for horses and carts ,having said that it's probably where they want us to end up . Imagine it the dystopian world where people have taken the engines out of cars and use horses to tow them around because petrol oil and diesel have been banned and electric cars are for the elite class .🤣👌👍

Enjoyed the ride Ian at a steady 40/45 mph. Roads can only improve when local councils raise and find funding to repair these roads. The exhaust sounds lovely and you best get back to clean Clematine. Bfn Mike .(Sunny Wales ) Yes. Managed a ride out the other day on RE Hunter roll on spring.

Nice ride Ian , I was out over the Snake pass to Derwent dam on Saturday and Congleton and Holmes Chapel today , some of the potholes are jarring when you've seen them too late to go round them! 😬 I was trying my new camera out as well , I need an external mic I think as the camera mic picks up the wind noise and it sounds bloody awfull , it drowns out the bike exhaust sound . Cheers Mel
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield 4 месяца назад
Thanks Mel, Congleton/Holmes Chapel are under Cheshire East, the same hilarious bunch who have neglected station road in Wrenbury for over two years, so it doesn’t surprise me. You only need to look at their salaries to know why everyone is suffering 🤬. Yes, you definitely need an external mic, you will never get good audio with the camera alone. Does the Akaso have a 3.5mm mic jack, if not you will need an adaptor ? Although I haven’t tried them, purple panda mics are highly rated. Movo ACM400 on Amazon looks good too, being less sensitive than most. Position just in front of the cheek pad (presuming you have a full face lid), so that it isn’t directly in front of your mouth and fit a dead cat.
@melfzs
@melfzs 4 месяца назад
@@ianhughesroyalenfield it's only a 2.5 mm mic jack, my mic I ordered is a 3.5 mm so I've now ordered an adaptor, and the mic has a baffle in it , if that's what a "dead cat" is ? 😅 I'm quite impressed with the video it produces for an entry level camera it's not bad at all 👍 Thanks for your help 👍
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield 4 месяца назад
@melfzs I can never understand why manufacturers go for 2.5mm 🙄. I am not sure about the term “baffle”, maybe it is the foam mic cover they usually come with. A dead cat, is a furry thing, which you put over the top of the foam mic head cover. It protects the mic from wind noise. Mine are from a company called Movo, on Amazon. This video of mine was recorded without the dead cat, and I regret not fitting it, as close to the start of the video, a tractor passed by, and you can hear slight clipping in the audio. A dead cat would help to prevent that, but on the downside, it can also slightly reduce audio. Not a problem if you mic is “hot” (sensitive) but it is if your mic is not so sensitive. Honestly, audio recording in our situation, is a bloody nightmare, and takes a hell of a lot of trial and error. What you think will/should work, usually doesn’t 🙈🙄😂

The road with potholes on that maxe me wonder 2-3 times a week is in Suffolk where TAYM rides past a new estate. There's a roundabout that has a series of potholes leading up to it. The roads must've been improved for the new houses which look quite recent so what did they use to do the roads copydex?🤔😊
@ianhughesroyalenfield

That section of road was disgusting, so many roads like it. Can't hear any interference.
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield 4 месяца назад
Thanks ice. The subject of interference, was if I hooked up a battery bank to the adapter, to charge the camera battery whilst on the move. I haven’t tried that as yet, but if I can find a long enough lead I will. That said, as the battery life is amazing on the OA’s, I think it is probably unnecessary. Although I didn’t time it exactly, I turned it on by the Gilpin Bridge Hotel, then it took me to Bowness, then Kirkstone Pass, then to Ambleside (all will be on 3 vids) which was about 1hr 20mins, then literally two minutes from home (won’t be including those vids), which was 26 miles, about 45 minutes (bloody traffic). Staggering considering I was recording in 2.7k 30fps, at 2-4 degrees plus wind chill.

I thought you're in NZ's 🇳🇿 North Island's East Coast with that road & gravel & pit holes but then realized it wasn't bad enough. You're right about not knowing what's around the corner like gravel & pot holes like that gravel I hit 3 inches deep on bend sloping away. I to watch those videos in Spain & Europe & think 🤔 their roads are bloody fantastic.
