Royal Enfield Constellation oil leak - Time for a road test!

Finally, after all the work chasing oil leaks - including the main one which had looked as if a full engine strip might be on the cards, it looked like it might be road test time!
The machine performed pretty well and I didn't 'nurse' it, so as to give a fair representation of that leak being cured, but one or two little matters came to mind, such as the ignition timing possibly being a little too advanced, and the carburation appearing to be rather weak. It could also be wise to check and tighten the cylinder head nuts, but overall things have improved considerably, I think.

What a smashing machine, ive never understood why Royal Enfield twins are so underrated compared to their peer BSA, Triumph and Nortons

Proper! There was a distinct risk of enjoyment on that ride. Oh, and everything's fine in the garden as there was an appearance from "Buggeroff".

G'day Paul, well another job dune and dusted, well done 👍, the bike looks great and listening sounds fantastic, the old girl runs fine, those roads would be the death of me, cars park wherever, narrow street, and that 20mph, l would loose my temper and licence in a heart beat, wide open spaces for this little black Duck, cheers mate you've done well, see you on the next, Neil 🤠.

Finally finally - A CONNIE. the only bike that gave me the s***s. It was a pals bike , got on the main road screwed it in first ,slid back on the seat with literal fingertips on grips - couldn’t shut it off - valve floated and allowed me to get control. My own bike was a 1949 phantom Bantam.

Funny how some people work. I’m assuming the solder blockage was a repair not a factory cock up. ( the pipe soldering bloke at Redditch would be doing hundreds a day for years and would never get it wrong) If I’ve ever repaired or made something like this I’ll always blow down it to check it’s clear and then block the other end to test for leaks. I don’t think this guy thought it through, having used a stick of solder to make sure, he didn’t wonder where half of it ended up.

I worry that with the number of external oil lines on this engine, it will ever be oil tight! I notice that the state of the roads in Wales are just as bad as they are in England.

Fair play Paul 😂! You're very professional ! I wouldn't be able to get past how ugly that bike is !!!! How do you keep stum about the dog, and whoever is responsible for it ? Neighbours I guess. I like your style 👍

In Japan if you don't have a place to park your car you are not allowed to buy one. Britain was better off with motorcycles and side cars. Bike sounds just great 😃

Nice ride out. The motor has a lovely torquey growl to it. From what I could see it was pulling approx 4K revs at 60mph, is that standard gearing?

Hello Paul. That is a very beautiful machine. Might I ask - what is one of your favorite singles to ride? Thanks, Marty in Pennsylvania USA.

@paulhenshaw4514 3 месяца назад
Thanks, Martin. My favourite single would be Triumph Tiger Cub, BSA B50, Panther M100 / 120 RE 500 Bullet - preferably British and / or tuned and probably several others as well, to be honest.

Plain stupid driving that restricted 20 mph speed wasn't it? Could have at least got up to 10 mph on that conjested high street.......oh hold on........

Lovely, haha...? 😁 Take it from me: British bikes from before the era of Honda 750 were all total crap. It's just that they hadn't met any real competition yet. I used to work as a motorcycle journalist in Sweden, at "Allt Om MC", between 1978 and 1981. Most of the Japanese and German bikes which we featured in our magazine were really good, dependable motorcycles. Even the stodgy, East-German brands, like the MZ 250 were good machines. Fast forward to a Triumph Bonneville 750, 1979 model, which was my test-bike during a week. That was the last model Triumph ever produced, and I can tell you it was not a good product. The outdated motor design worked fairly well in configurations up to 500 cc, but at 750 cc it was a major VIBRATOR. It simply would shake your arms and hands to death, at speeds over 80 km/hr. Not even the Harley's were that bad. I was never especially impressed by the British motorcycles then, in the 1970's. "Good riddance..."😜
@paulhenshaw4514

Total crap? I think that's what you are spouting. The British bikes helped us win the war against those who you reckon made better things than us though, didn't they ...

@@paulhenshaw4514 Hey, I'm a fairly young guy, and haven't experienced British bikes from the 1940-50's. I first started riding bikes in the early 1970's. As I've said, the concept of a parallel, vertical twin, where the pistons move in tandem, like the Bonneville, works up to about 500-600 cc. After that, the vibrations become unbearable, and even damaging to the body and the bike. When I say they were total crap, I'm exaggerating, just for the purpose of discussion. The fact is that British bikes were good when they had monopoly on the market, after WW2. In 1968 Honda made the CB 750, and it was game over. The Japanese split the crankcase horizontally, which stopped the oil-leaks, and introduced better motor designs overall. British manufacturers failed to catch up, and got stuck with obsolete designs, even though they looked smashing. I've had dreams about owning a Norton Commando, for instance...
@paulhenshaw4514
@paulhenshaw4514 3 месяца назад
Buy that Norton Commando then - that might be a total eye opener for you. I once bought a scruffy 1977 CB750 K6 for 50 pence from a mate in the early 80's because the engine had blown up - I broke it for spares ... Also, when it was a runner, it couldn't stay with my Trident, which I still have as it happens.
@pekkaastrom7346
@pekkaastrom7346 3 месяца назад
@@paulhenshaw4514 Yeah, I admire the styling of the last version of Trident, the T160. Many people report that it was a decent performer also. Unfortunately it came too late, and by that time the whole British motor industry was going through it's worst economic period. That was the end...
