Royal Enfield Himalayan Off-Road on the Montana Trail to Superior Arizona

Thanks to a local Meet-Up group "Dual Sport - Dirt Bike Junkies" we tackled the off road trails near Superior, AZ. I was with 3 other guys with much more suited bikes for the terrain coupled with more years of dirt experience. They were patient with me as I held to my pace in the process. Great scenery and trails with very little traffic for a Sunday morning. Came away with zero bumps and bruises and some maintenance on the front suspension of the Himi.

It is a tractor and I think what a lot of people overlook is the that for it's weight, it is very easy to pick up.

As a himalayan owner who keeps pushing my off road experience in the state parks... this was inspirational. Thanks for sharing. After watching this I know I can push a little further. First time I dropped my bike at a campsite, after getting it back up it wouldn't start. Alone in the wilderness with no cell signal - talk about a scare. Thankfully after about 5 minutes and more attempts got her started. Always an adrenaline rush!

If its fuel injected, On centre stand key off, wait 10 seconds, key on and start. On side stand wait 5 mins with key off, yes, it takes that long to reset the tip over sensor if uts on the side stand. If its carbed, on centre stand, walk away from it first 10 mins, enjoy the scenery and let the flooding in the carb clear

Great video. Thanks for posting falls and all. Looked an amazing place. So cool at the end when you rode home while the others trailerd their bikes. In my opinion that alone makes the Himalayan is a great bike.

I put a smaller sprocket on the front of mine, which will help immensely on those trails, and won't affect top speed much if any. Are you on the stock tires? Need some knobbies like the D-Tusk, also air down. It will climb all those roads like a billy goat.

In Colombia South America, I ride the same type of roads everyday to get to my house. We are in the Andes mountains. I have to inspect, tighten and repair on a regular basis. Just had to pull the front end off and re-grease and adjust the steering head bearings. The Himmy is a heavy road bike that is designed to also handle rough rocky dirt roads. My biggest complaint with my 2021 is that it stalls constantly, defined by about 80% of the times the engine drops below 1800 rpm and has done so for 13,600km and shows no sign of getting anything but worse with age. The inability to drop down to the idle range and tractor, makes dirt riding very difficult and uncomfortable. I have tried nearly every trick posted on line and nothing. The dealership has claimed to had fixed the problem several times and it just stalls as soon as I try to drive it off the RE property. I would like to say I enjoy the bike, but when it stalls in dirt, the back tire just locks up and skids. I learned to ride the clutch for the stalls. It would be nice if RE would officially acknowledge the problem and tell us what it is really caused by so we owners can fix it.
@motometaphor
@motometaphor Год назад
That does not sound fun. I never had any problems with the bike stalling like you explained but I have seen some videos of people adjusting the idle
@danielben-avraham1539
@danielben-avraham1539 Год назад
@@motometaphor If you watch the YT channel On Two wheels Ben, he covers all the typical problems found in the Himalayan. All the problems that my bike has had up to now, are very typical. The three biggest problems reported are stalling, transmission, and steering head bearings. And mine has had all three. You can adjust the idle and it will do nothing to stop the stalling unless you adjust it up to 2,000 rpm, which will make it very difficult to ride off road. If you have no problems so far thank God, because as you put miles on the bike it will likely begin breaking down.

I'm thinking of taking trip to Alaska. Would you take himalayan or drz400? I got a drz400s, thinking of getting himalayan bc I can touch ground better on it, I'm 5'8" with fused right ankle so I can't bend it to tip toe.
@motometaphor
@motometaphor Год назад
@brettb8706 The Himalayan is a capable machine. The seat height and ability to touch to ground would be much easier than your DRZ. Keep in mind thought that the power output of the DRZ is much different than the Himi. The Himi has a much "softer" power output that is very forgiving but can also have you wanting something with a little more get up and go. In the end if it was me, I would chose the Himi because of the windscreen, gas consumption and tank capacity, and general comfort
@MrAbbielover

If this is the type of riding you want to do, do yourself a favor & put a larger sprocket on the rear wheel. In the grand scheme of things, chains & sprockets are not that expensive but should be replaced as a complete set. If you don't like the shorter gearing (it isn't going to be good for highway riding), it won't be hard to put the old hardware back on. If you don't like this advice, I think your clutch is going to be short-lived. What will that cost to replace?

I've thought about it but I do too much highway driving to get to the trails

That climb after the Rogers Trough turnoff is a stinker. Needs LOTS of torque, or a confident left hand with the clutch slip. Hated doing it on my Tiger 800 (lots of clutch slip), my Tuareg is much better in that regard. I really don't care for the downhill portion of the ride though. Just frustrating. Scree and switchbacks, scree and switchbacks. And the occasional asshole SxS going the wrong way on the loop.
@motometaphor
@motometaphor Год назад
How do you like the Tuareg off road? I road to Four Peaks with someone last month on a Tuareg while I was on my Husqvarna 701 and he was constantly out in front of us. It seems like a capable bike
@kcconnor2636
@kcconnor2636 Год назад
I've never considered myself a particularly skillful rider. I ride conservatively, and I'm out for the scenery and the camping and finding new roads to get to neat places. I could never get the hang of sand on my old Tiger and just figured it was a skill I was just not destined to have. I bought my Tuareg last summer and right after the 600 mile break-in I rode it with friends up to the Colorado BDR. My immediate thought was "you can't buy skill, but you can buy a Tuareg." My riding buddies were immediately impressed with the change in my riding capability. I still don't enjoy sand, but I can get through it. We went and rode the SoCal BDR a month ago and I definitely bitched about the sand, but I made it through it. There was about a 2-3 mile stretch of it from the route being ruined by rain that we had no idea was going to be there, right after the Joshua Tree section. You doing the AZDSR ride this Saturday over this same trail? Still unsure if I'm going to go on the Tuareg or if I'll take my little bike, a Husky FE250. I had always heard that the Himalayan was a tractor, I'm kind of surprised it stalled out on your climb in the video. You did make it to the left bend before it stalled though, which is farther than most folks make it that I've seen. Usually they stall out about 20 yards before the turn. If you took the turn wider or slipped the clutch a little more, you would have kept going up. Losing inertia in one of those big divot-potholes is a killer. I was bouncing between a Husky 701 and the Tuareg. I'm kind of surprised someone who owns a 701 would also own a Himalayan. What motivated that decision? A rally tower or even a modest windscreen on the 701 seems to make it a tolerable tourer, at least as good as a Himalayan would be.
@motometaphor
@motometaphor Год назад
@@kcconnor2636 I can't make it to the ride on Saturday. I was out with a group last week to Box Canyon and that area. We found ourselves into some advanced trails and I was on the 701. The bike was too bike for those trails and my skills were not advanced enough. Multiple guys had to take turns riding my bike up the rocks to get out of the canyons. I figured I would give myself a break this weekend.
