When it comes to RPE, (please correct me if I am wrong) it's not a question of perception. It's a matter of bar speed/movement, a matter of bar performance. This is how you gauge yourself with RPE style training. How fast the bar is moving and how well your technique is with the weight you're using. I have never liked the the name 'Rate of Perceived Exertion' for one is highly misleading with the perception part because this makes it sound as though its all about how the weight feels. Whereas with RPE the focus is not at all about how it feels in your hands or on your back. It's about how the bar moves, the bar speed/velocity. Slower the bar velocity, the higher the RPE and visa versa. It's about an assessment of your performance, not how heavy or how much pressure you feel when you pick it up. It's about how you perform, not how you feel. More of a concept within a framework than a framework within itself. RPE is to manage intensity and fatigue percentages is for managing volume. Train to the appropriate amount of stress and forget concerns about volume. Secondly, it just has a terrible egghead ring to it which scares most people away to begin with. I prefer to refer to this style of training as BMP (Bar Movement Performance) training. Please share your thoughts on this, I would very much so appreciate some help with this topic, thanks.
@JackgarPrime
@JackgarPrime 4 года назад
Well the issue with basing it solely on bar movement is that people have different rates of explosiveness with which they can move the bar. While for the squat and pressing movements this still correlates pretty well, for something like the deadlift, there can be a dramatic difference between individuals in terms of their bar speed relative to their ability to keep reps going. There are folks who can just grip it and rip it super fast on every rep, but even though they get a super fast movement on the 5th rep, they go for the 6th and the bar doesn't even budge. So even though the bar moved fast and smooth on the 5th rep, it actually was still an RPE 9.5 or 10 because the person was spent. Meanwhile, you have guys who grind it out like crazy on rep 3, but they can keep it going all the way up to rep 6 while maintaining good form. Most people aren't on these two extremes, but it's still worth keeping in mind. Like I'm more the former than the latter. My deadlifts explode off the floor and lock out pretty quick, but then suddenly I can't even get the bar to move at all. But I know that about myself now, and I learned it pretty quickly. So while bar speed is very useful, it shouldn't be everything. People will learn where on that sort of spectrum they fall with practice.

I'm not going to take a stance one way or the other on global warming, but I'm just curious: does anyone out there who believes in global warming have an example of what data could be presented to falsify your believe? Rip does have a good point that to make a scientific claim it has to be falsifiable. So if you don't have a response to that, you really should consider if your belief is actually just based on politics. This goes both ways. If you don't believe in global warming, do you have an example of what data could be presented to you that would falsify your belief? Once again, if not, then you probably don't have a viewpoint based on science, but rather your viewpoint is based on politics. What should you do if you realize your viewpoint is purely a construct of your political alignment and your social environment? Either educate yourself and form a scientific opinion, OR just admit you don't know. Nothing wrong with being honest.
@rationallogic5325
@rationallogic5325 4 года назад
You could present data that shows cooling trends, ice caps growing and the sea level falling. Unfortunately for any wanting to hold to Rip's views the climate has been warming for at least 10,000 years. That's how the last ice age ended and the resulting ice melt raised the sea levels. The question isn't is global warming happening, it's has human contributions to environment degregation either 1) increased the rate of warming, and/or 2) thrown the natural balance out of cycle preventing another ice age? I think there are valid questions regarding global warming, but when you actually start presenting data and findings to skeptics they will more often than not start to put their tin foil hat on, (And Rip has an impressive tin foil hat) and by the end of the conversation they are trying to convince you that every single nation on earth, many of whom are enemies, are all working together to fool you into thinking that the earth is warming when it isn't. If this was true it would be the greatest joint endeavor of human governments of all time. Imagine Rip pontificating about how he thought the theory of relativity was wrong and that the big bang is a religion. No sensible person would give him the time of day. So why do we listen to any normal Joe pontificating about climate change? Because it affects us directly. Relativity means little to our daily lives, but if we are indeed warming the planet at the rates scientists say we are, then we should do something about it. That means making personal change. It may mean personal sacrifices of some luxuries, and if there is one thing humans do not like sacrificing it's their personal luxuries. So we will lend our ear to someone who's view largely aligns with ours. An interesting thing I note is that a lot of religious people call global warming a religion because it's wrong, but people believe it 'religiously'. Should I take that to mean that all religions are wrong? I'm not sure why people use this term. At it's worst it's a flawed scientific theory that some have taken to form an ideology that guides their actions. That's not the same as a religion, and anyone (Maybe Rip?) who thinks they are the same simply don't understand the terms.

I love Rip but I disagree on RPE. I don't think it takes that long to learn how many reps you have left in the tank. As Rip points out, there is a difference between how a rep feels overall, versus how close I am to failing it, and you quickly learn how to differentiate them. Figuring out your RPE 10 and 9 is fairly easy, RPE 8 takes a couple of weeks, RPE 7 another few weeks, and those are the ones that really matter. Occasionally you will test your perception to fine tune it. Sometimes, on my last set, let's say it was supposed to be RPE 8, I will continue to exhaustion, to test how accurate was my prediction. People are not THAT stupid.
@JackgarPrime
@JackgarPrime 4 года назад
Yeah RPE is honestly not that complicated after the first few times. Maybe if you do something like the novice LP first, where you're doing very heavy sets of FAHVE for a while, then switch to an RPE program, you'll already know by that point what it feels like to hit or even fail at a super tough set, and you can use that experience in an RPE-based program. Of course, it does also help if you have a coach who can judge your bar speed and form, but I found that even just recording myself and comparing how I felt to what the speed and form on the recording was like will help me judge if my RPE assessment was accurate or not, since bar speed can contribute a lot to judging RPE.

To falsify the hypothesis of human caused climate change I would require that you analyse the atmosphere using precisely calibrated and accurate measurement tools, and report that the CO2 atmospheric concentration and other greenhouse gases are continuing to rise year on year but the average temperature of the oceans has not risen over the same period of time, that the ice sheets in the Arctic/ Antarctica have at least retained their ice sheet thickness and thus their surface area. All scientific analyse conducted over the past 50 years does not show this. It shows the opposite. For your comment that the climate models are wrong, actual climate models of the past 30 years have actually under represented the rate of ice melting and sea level rise in response to the increase in global temperatures. Now this is very clear Rip. What you fail to grasp about your 4.5 billion years of atmospheric [CO2] point is that while the relative values of [CO2] have wildly fluctuated and have indeed been higher in the past to what they are now, what the data now tells us is that the rate of change of [CO2] is vastly higher than what is what is the past. You are fond of the definition of power: force/time. The shorter the time that you can produce the same force the greater the power. I would like you to apply this to climate change. It is the rate of increase of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere that we need to be concerned about. Further perhaps this link about sea level rise might be of interest: skepticalscience.com/sea-level-rise-intermediate.htm One last point. There is a huge causal link between the CO2 gas and a temperature increase. The molecular bonds in the CO2 molecule by its very nature can absorb wavelengths of light in the infrared spectrum. This is the same wavelength of light that is emitted as heat from the ground. It is the asymmetric oscillation of the CO2 molecule which actively absorbs light of the wavelength 4.26 um. You will find that this wavelength of light corresponds to the infrared section. Fundamentally, CO2 absorbs the heat that is being emitted from the surface of the earth and thus prevents this heat to escape our atmosphere. The UV light that heats of planet from the sun is not blocked by CO2 as UV light oscillates at an entirely different wavelength and thus is not absorbed by CO2. This process is extremely well understood and is quantifiable under the rigorous laws of quantum mechanics which, to this date, is the most accurate model ever created by humans. I write this because a central tenant of your training philosophy, Rip, is training in a quantifiable sound way from exercise execution to programming. From what I have read of your work you want things to be done in the most efficient and effective manner. Your climate change remarks are analogous to teaching the dead lift pull while the bar is 2 feet in front of the shins. Not exactly the most efficient movement pattern. We both agree that authority should not be listened to, the majority should not be believed just because they are the majority. Scientific truth inherently means that some parameter is quantifiable, there is an experiment to conduct, data to analyse and I believe that the populace's mistrust of climate science is that they have no real grasp of how to conduct their own scientific inquiry. Overall this problem is very serious and real because no matter what we do from now, from absolutely now, atmospheric [CO2] will remain at this level for hundreds of years. Tomorrow if no fossil fuels are burnt then the [CO2] will just stay the same, this increased temperature of the planet will not continue to rise but it will still be elevated compared to pre-industrialized levels. As such the frequency of chaotic weather patterns will continue. What was once a 1 in a 500 year storm will occur 1 ever 20 years and so on. What we have to prevent is the runaway greenhouse effect. There comes a tipping point where the boiler cannot be turned off unless we can manipulate the atmosphere through some new shockingly powerful technology. On Venus there is the runaway greenhouse effect. The surface temperature is hot enough for solid lead to become liquid. We do not want this to happen to Earth. I hope that a healthy interrogation of the facts will yield an interesting discussion. I enjoy your podcast and channel a great deal

Rip is dead wrong on his opinions on conditioning for battle. I've been to combat, I've been in firefights, you do need to be able to operate at a high-level of intensity for upwards of 15 to 20 minutes. Whether your Army or Marine Corps you should be able to complete your run requirement in 12 to 20 minutes. The running requirements in the PT test do simulate The ability to operate at a high intensity for a duration of time. If you can't do that, I don't want to fight with you.

@gregorystacey2470

Alex T Alex T there is a level if conditioning that comes with performing the barbell movements. But it is not the same as being able to operate at high intensity "run fast" for 15-20 minutes without being so gassed you can't think straight. You do have to run in modern warfare. Sometimes pre, during, and post firefight....on very minimal sleep. Strength is very important too, but it's not the pinnacle of battle readiness. If Rip trained to fight and actually fought then he would know that. The fact that he's so sure about something he's never done is concerning. Rip doesnt run and doesnt want to thus he thinks no one else should. If you cant run HARD for 15 minutes, you are not fit to be a soldier and we"re better off without you. Besides, if you cant deadlift 405 AND figure out a way to run 2 miles in 15 minutes...youre not strong at all

If you think the army ALWAYS drives to battle you are ignorant and if you think there is no requirement for cardiovascular endurance you are a fool. And SS is a VERY POOR system for gaining cardio vascular endurance. It is designed for maximising your 1RM , period. That does help, but trust me, 99.9% of the time the modern soldier does not benefit from being able to deadlift 1000lbs more than he does being able to run for several miles with a moderate load on his back. This is self evident.
@BradWilliamsonCoaching

@Fabio Q - that's ok. It's also immediately clear that you have no experience in strength training. But why are we arguing? The point is that soldiers need to be prepared to fight. So they trian. He is right about one thing, "thousands of climate scientists" is not data. In fact, it's a combination of argumentum ad populum and appeal to authority. In other words, appealing to the authority of popular opinion within the scientific community. It's logical fallacy in debate. I have no comment on whether he's right or not about man made climate change btw.
@Alexander_Tronstad

Bravo! There is also this notion that this is something to accept and then everyone is on the same page. The whole secret to the mania is that this is a complex topic being sold as something simple: Let's say CO2 levels rising is causing the temperature to increase, and climate to change. Well, then you need to work out exactly what is bad about it, and whether or not you can do something about it and what you should not do something about. Then you need to work out how what you decide to do about it affects not only the climate, but how it affects humans and our behavior and see if not making some country lay off it's resources will cause unrest because of poverty, and thus again if it will cause a new more fierce battle for resources, that in turn makes a new host of issues arise. Funny example of an attempt to save the environment here where I am from: a tourist cabin at the top of a mountain here used a little propane burner for making waffles and selling them. Then they installed expensive solar driven machines instead, that had to be carried up by helicopter, and the engineers had to set it up, and they needed to chopper up another one with engineers and all. To save the environment! It's hilarious!

Funny how the scientific method generally goes unchallenged in every context-biochemistry, astrophysics, advanced technology-except the two fields that have implications for highly politicized public discourses: climate science and evolutionary biology. Do you find the theory of gravity to also be an example of fallacy masquerading as legitimate science?
@unixnerd1
@unixnerd1 5 лет назад
Appealing to authority is a logical fallacy when you refer to someone/thing that isn't an expert in the field in question, e.g. Albert Einstein says sumo squats build more muscle than conventional. If you actually see that the people who have spent their entire professional and academic lives studying a particular issue and virtually all agree on some point, then appealing to their opinion as an authority is not a fallacy.

True, thousands of scientists do not always a consensus make in the abstract. But when 100% of peer reviewed papers in the last 10 years support the thesis and a 99% consensus of ALL climate experts tells you something, I would NOT take the opinion of a weight training coach in preference. And which group is more likely to be motivated by money: 99% of all climate scientists or the petrochemical industry? It just cracks me up when Rip says the scientists are all on the take, like the petrochemical industry is a charity! Idiocy. Sheer idiocy. How much do you wanna bet RIp was pro Big Tobacco back in the day? "No proof it causes cancer! All those scientists are just tryin' to make money!". Stick to the powerlifting.

Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum and Dr. Austin Baraki from Barbell Medicine (Starting Strength coaches as well, still, I think?) have late novices / early intermediates with a few months of training experience jump on their intermediate program ('The Bridge'), which is solely based on the RPE scale without using any percentages. Does that make their program suboptimal for an early intermediate (I am one) then? They're also saying the Texas Method is pretty much crap, even if set up as a 4 day version with 2 upper/2 lower days as described in PPST (3rd ed.) which fixes a lot of the issues people have with stock TM (not enough pulling volume, not enough upper body volume etc.) I don't know what to believe any more actually :D

@Hello All I guess SS is for people who can't think for themselves then. It takes 1-2 months max to get proficient in RPE. I did the bridge after LP and it not only went awesome, it taught me more in those 8 weeks about lifting and myself than the whole year of doing SSLP and studying everything Rip has released. The more I research and experience health and fitness the more I realize Rip is wrong and his programming is based on false premises. It seems you fundamentally misunderstand RPE and BBM style training. It not only works it is far and away superior to SS programming. Your statement "Did RPE 10 all the time..." shows you failed at the very basics of RPE training, so I do not think it is fair to judge the program the way you have.
@mysticnumber
@mysticnumber 5 лет назад
@Hello All That's good to hear! I'm glad you stuck with it. I also overshot RPE a lot with the bridge 1.0, but after running 1 or 2 more templates I got it dialed-in, now several templates later RPE is second nature. I think Rip's bias is clear here. If it is not the SS method (or doesn't align with his views) he just bashes it.

BBM is the way to go after your LP. RPE is not that hard to figure out. You will progress with RPE. You will stall pretty quick with SS methodology unless you are on steroids. For the normal lifter, RPE is the way to go and BBM is the best IMO

@Eugene Stoner Who suggested infringing upon his first amendment rights? It was merely a statement about how unwise it is for Rippetoe to attempt to expound upon subjects that he is clearly not qualified to discuss with any kind of legitimacy-especially in the context of a forum on a completely unrelated topic. No one wants to restrict his right to speak freely on these subjects; if he wants to publicize his ignorance of well-established science and the scientific method in general, he should feel free to do so, and he is.
@deanb1272
@deanb1272 5 лет назад
I don't need formal qualifications to recognize that he is talking out of his depth on this matter; anyone with basic reasoning and critical thinking ability would see that he resorted to misinterpretations, straw man fallacies and a not-so-subtle appeal to authority (casually mentioning his geology degree to bolster the legitimacy of his claim) in an attempt to refute the claims of professionals who do in fact have credentials in this field. The point isn't whether or not I am qualified to determine his suitability to make claims on this topic; it's that he IS NOT qualified to dispute the work of climate scientists who use the same methods of analysis and peer review as those used in every other field of science that we rely upon in our daily lives. I am happy to admit that I don't have any credentials in this field, because I can defer to the scientists who do. Had he disputed the theory of evolution, would I need to have published a dissertation on evolutionary biology to point out how wrong he is to make such a claim?

To put the utmost faith in these people with no desire to hold them accountable or take them to task to make sure they're right is the very definition of naive. Honestly, the learning curve is part of what makes it more important to learn earlier. Jordan and Austin have shown that many times, it's not the intensity that matters but the volume, and as long as that volume is within the 70-85% range for volume work and 85-93% for the intensity practice, it will drive hypertrophy and an improvement in strength. Rip seems more concerned with PR's and learning what you can actually do though, as opposed to simply training for hypertrophy and using hypertrophic gains to boost strength. Tldr: RIP: Make PR's to drive progress. BBM: use submaximal high volume work to drive hypertrophy while improving recoverability by increasing volume and adding GPP work.
