Here I go over some notes about the installation experience and the fit and finish of the RSI Smart Cap. This is on my 2020 Chevy Silverado, Crew Cab, Z71 Duramax 5' 8" Bed.
@@sean-rady fwiw, I purchased from a distributor (off road tents) and was not assessed a handling fee. Shipping was actually free. Definitely shop around! handling fees in this day and age are bogus.
Mine came with a dent too but I made it work as well coz I like the way it looks. The steal isn’t as strong as I thought but it’s better than Fiberglas no doubt. And I found that you have to lift the side panels slightly inward and they slide in pretty easy. And the harness was inside mine but the wiring was wrong so I had to contact them and they sent me a new one. I definitely feel your venting by the way lol
A dose of reality. Thanks for this. I would not have put up with that dent on top, even though out of sight I'd know it's always there. Very frustrating. And I hope it doesn't contribute to any water leaks seeing how close it is to a seam. But it is a beautiful looking cap. One observation, I really like this cap against the white color, that contrast gives the impression of the shape of the underlying pickup rather than just have it all blend together and losing the sense of the shape of a pickup bed without anything on it. Observation. I've seen other videos where they could open the tailgate with the rear SmartCap door closed, so not sure why that is happening to you, maybe it happens with Chevy pickups but not others, or maybe something about how it was installed on yours.
I purchased the same cap for my 2021 Toyota Tacoma 6 ft bed. Leaks at air vent when you go through car wash. Have went to dealer that installed several times and still leaks. RSI rep now trying to help but no fix. Dealer told me they don’t have car washes in Africa😳. Still like it hope it gets resolved.
I can't remember where I saw this same issue, but someone said they sealed the vent on the ends where the water was coming in with caulk, and that stopped the leak.
Any added noise in the cabin since adding this? Also can you drive with your truck bed down while having the camper closed or do the back window need to be wide open ? I haul a kayak with a bed extender so not sure if that would cause an issue?
No added noise, the rubber gasket between the bed and the Cap is very thick and seals very well. Insulates from any noise. And yes, you can have the back tailgate down and the back cap door closed. Not sure if that would be advised though as the aerodynamics of that kind of set up would be bad. I would suggest just traveling with the back cap door open to reduce the drag on the road.
Looking to add a 2 part roof rack to my Tacoma Cab and Topper to accompany this same shell. Concern is the side windows opening and hitting the rack possibly breaking/jamming up the window operation. Did you get your Rack sorted out and how did it go?
Yes my racks came in, there another video on my channel that briefly films over them. That visual may be helpful enough for you. They're probably 3 inches off the caps roof, so I don't think the side panels would interfere. Maybe with an awning? But I think you'd be good... I'd have to trust RSI thought about those accessories.
Got mine two weeks ago, didn’t want the same cap everyone else has, so spent the extra money on the RSI. People definitely ask about it, ordered the crossbars but they are on back order so I’m not sure when they will arrive.
@@skyerains2754 nice dude congrats! I spoke with the RSI guy about the tailgate and the back lid and he said it's a safety feature for the back lid to be open before the tailgate can drop. I too am waiting on my load bars. They sent me a free pair since the cap had some bends and one dent in it.
@Lawrence Chaisson I just spoke with an RSI rep from their techincal support department (Lionnel was his name) and he was very friendly. He is sending me the wiring harness that was not included in the original packaging. I also told him about the dent on the roof panel and he said I could go 1 of 2 ways. 1- register the product with it's 3 year manufactured warranty, submit the photos of the damage, and let the warranty team take care of the problem. He said I could also get a quote from a local body shop and they would reimburse the cost to repair the dent. 2- Offer a promo code for another one of their products. I asked him how much the discount would be and he said it's up to the supervisor reviewing the damaged photographs to then determine the amount of discount. So far I'm happy with the response and customer service from RSI. Lastly, in regards to the tailgate opening and the cap door opening- the design of the cap is intended so that the cap door must open first before the tailgate door opens. From that standpoint, my cap and tailgate is operating as designed. They said it's designed that way for extra security. He said in South Africa (which is wear this is manufactured), security is super important to have for truck add on such as this cap.
@@sean-rady Wow, what a bummer! I would think that should be a mandatory safety feature. If some one got closed in the back, there should be a way to get out. Awesome looking cap, but that's a deal breaker.
I'm confused by your comment: "I was thinking about it. Not." What do you mean? As far as shipping to home option, I'm not sure. The size and weight alone would have made it at least $100+ if I had to guess.
Hey man, I’m considering the same cap for my 2019 silverado. Randomly, I am also in Tallahassee and will be purchasing from truck n car concepts. I was wondering if you could tell me the height of the door opening with the tailgate open? I’m trying to figure out if I can fit a bike through the door, but can’t find that measurement anywhere. Also I’d love to know the internal height measurement. Thank you!!
Those are the 2500 chevy OEM cab lights for 2020. I bought them through the parts department. Install was challenging. Drilling the holes just in front of the sun roof, then running the wire behind the head liner and then wiring it to the parking lights. My friend who do lighting for a living did most of it, I just watched and observed.
I would add that there is a gap between the cab of the truck and the cap. So you would need to seal that gap to effectively get heat into the cap, otherwise it wouldn't be very efficient.
Any reason why this wouldn’t fit on a 2016 Denali 1500 with the same size bed? I know the website says 2019-2021 but don’t visually see any significant differences that would make this product not fit/work
Mine has an issue with the paint imperfection. looks like it was painted and it did not fully cure and some paint came off and has minor scratch on one side that catches the nail. talking to RSI at the moment and going to check the top section again Why don't you contact RSI and tell them about the dent?
I did. They offered me free cross rails as compensation for the dent and I accepted. Sorry to hear about your paint. My top tail light is now no longer working, so that stinks.
I guess i dont understand why youd want one of these for 4k. I just priced a high end a.r.e cap with several options for less than 2800 installed and it would look almost factory. Id only want one of these of i could buy one for a thousand bucks shipped to my house.
My truck isn't equipped with a bed camera. I would say depending on where that camera is located, maybe? I'm just not sure. RSI would hopefully know before ordering.
@@seantan2912 That should work as long as it's still within the pre cut hole for the 3 brake light on the cap. If the camera is mounted on the edge of the 3rd brake light, I think the cap would block it as that hole is already to narrow and not wide enough. As far as rain leaking, no, it's really dry and held up well. So far I'm still loving the functionality and look of it.
I have the same top for my F150 Platinum. Great product please call the customer service line for RSI and let them see your review believe me they will respond and make it right for you... They are a strong company when it comes to Customer service... by pass the dealer and go to RSI directly... Its worth your time ... Just one man's opinion The Banks family
@@sean-rady get the kitchen side and table for free my friend. They would love to give it to you for a favorable review here in the United States.. I'm just saying
@@sean-rady been considering this cap. Didn't realize it was lighter than fiberglass. That's a plus. I'm thinking its more secure too - better latches.
@J W so far I like it the buy. I am having issues with the 3m tape holding up the wiring to the 3rd tail light. The tape has failed and I've had to use command straps several times to keep it up.
Just had one fitted never was aware you lose your rear vision electronic mirror and tub camera? Now totally useless I had expected a canopy made especially for Silverado would have taken this into account?? In Australia they cost $7300 must admit very disappointing, they seem perfect in other respects but to lose those features??? If I had been advised before ordering I may have looked for something else?
Man, nice video, kinda missed some important points but overall, liked it. Been eyeballing this cap for my truck, and I truly believe if it was painted to match would look sick!!! Now, pointer you missed, waterproof, how good is it at keeping water out, specially back window and that vent on top.
Thanks man. Yeah this was filmed right after I installed it, so my experience with water and the vent and back window was little to none. I will say now that I've had it for a couple weeks, the locks for the keys are starting to become quote difficult to use, and water is starting to build up inside the latches on the windows. I'll film another video that goes in depth further.
Don't buy something like this unless you get it from a dealer and don't pay him a penny up front. That is basic 101 of buying any product. You paid $4,000 for a dented cap?
Everyone step away from the cliff. RSI is building a plant outside of Dallas so these warranty and supply issues will iron themselves out. Yes the plant is a some time off, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. These shells are still miles ahead of any fiberglass shell.
IF THIS IS TRUE THAY ARE BUILDING A PLANT IN TEXAS IT IS ABOUT TIME MAYBE THEY CAN MAKE SMARTCAPS FOR OLDER MODEL YEARS OF GMC TRUCKS THAY WOULD MAKE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
So the fiberglass ARE or any other brand that has a nicer fit and finish that costs roughly the same also isn't worth 3800? It is what items like this cost. Not the cheap grandpa's cap.
