Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

Well I'll be honest. I'm a Doctor Who baby. I was born just a month before the first Pilot in 1963. As someone who first fell into the series with Tom Baker fell out of it with Peter Davison then returned with William Hartnell in the YTV broadcast in 1991, and been with it since, I loved it with each Doctor I've watched. The figures include streaming 7 days and 3.38 reflect that Doctor Who is no longer in the public consciousness in the UK. The era started off with solid ratings but lost several million due to the fact that millions of people have not been impressed with what they have seen. I'd agree with the idea that it's possible that the show may have a decent worldwide audience with the Disney+ deal. But is it enough to justify the budget? If not then Disney will pull out leaving this era doomed with its undoubtedly low rating within the UK.
@ozzie1397
@ozzie1397 Месяц назад
True, it isn't very impressive... you can add the fact that RTD is an insufferable pos who calls fans who don't alien with his political views as the c word. He also mocked and insulted disabled fans after they rejected his pathetic attempt at pandering to them. The whole attitude these people have towards fans is a big reason this show has the worst ratings in it's 60 year history. Rip doctor who.
@CrikeyItsDan

It’s very difficult to compare today’s ratings to the Tennant or Smith era, how people consume media has changed so much in that time. For example I know people are waiting for the whole series to finish, before binge watching because thanks to Netflix, that’s the way they choose to consume media now, wanna binge watch everything. We also really have no idea how Disney Plus is doing, without those numbers it’s close to impossible to say how the show is performing overall. The UK side of things isn’t great though, no point pretending these ratings aren’t fantastic. But ultimately it’s Disney paying the bills and how it’s performing on there is the most important thing and we just don’t know!🤷‍♂️
@gamedude412

Not really tennant, smith, Jodie and Peter still had the 7 day and 7day 4screen. If the there was a change then the 7day 4screen would be trending upwards or peaking. But in fact it almost appears to be bots with how robotically consistent it is for the season

Alas, even accounting for binge viewing and different devices, the numbers are unprecedently low. And word of mouth is spreading how poorly written the episodes are.
@CrikeyItsDan
@CrikeyItsDan Месяц назад
@@senryu93 To be clear, I'm not excusing how bad these ratings are, at all. I do think there are some valid reasons or excuses when you compare peak NewWho ratings to today about how times have changed and the way people consume media has changed and so on. BUT just 6/7 months ago, the 60th specials averaged over 7m people for the three episodes. It shows that people were ready for more of the Who they loved and were willing to give the show another chance. 3/4 million of those people have left again already. That's got nothing to do with how people consume media changing, that's simply because those people did not like what was offered. Ultimately though as mentioned in the original comment, it's more about how it's performing on Disney that matters most. Now if it was doing record breaking numbers I'm sure Disney would be bragging about them, so we can probably rule that out. But is it doing okay enough to be renewed, or is it doing horribly? That we simply don't know and it's the most important factor to whether this show continues or not.

When criticising Doctor Who’s UK ratings, I haven’t seen many people compare the ratings to other shows performances. If you look at the top 50 shows on BARB, the highest rated gets just over 6m so the fact that Doctor Who has been able to clear the 4m mark on a couple of occasions over this series is still really good. As for the Disney side of things, if they did pull out, that wouldn’t be ideal but I’m sure the BBC would continue to produce the show as a co-production with Bad Wolf (who’s name curiously fails to crop up in most of the doom mongering stories out there)
@simongardner3766

The 3.38 million figure is 7 days live and recorded, plus all device types, which is the figure compared against previous episodes. Even if viewing habits are changing, this figure still takes that in to account doesn't it? It is interesting that RTD said he had been tasked with focusing on younger viewers or Gen Z. Most people that watch BBC1 in a linear way and pay the licence are older viewers, who have lived in a world with only a few channels. They tend to just watch whatever's on, good or bad. So if live transmission numbers are going down, it could mean they don't identify with the show as the Doctor Who they remember anymore. The change in direction of Doctor Who, (from a sci-fi adventure for all the family, to a more fantasy/musical/social messaging style show), means it is really taking a chance on gaining more new media youth viewers than it is losing. The argument against the Disney figures is that they would have released them if they had been a huge success. Outside the UK it is less about likes on TikTok, than whether they are willing to pay for content. If the BBC became a subscription service in 2027, would young people be prepared to pay for todays Doctor Who?

You need to understand how ratings are calculated as it may shock you. The ratings are mainly derived from the BARB panel. The panel is between 5-7,000 UK households with approximately 16,000 ppl. Once calculated the figure is then extrapolated to give an estimate of what the whole UK is viewing. It is not an exact science but it is the industry standard used by all channels. Streaming results are far more accurate. Every play on Iplayer is calculated & shown in the consolidated ratings figure. If you watched on TV on BBC One without Iplayer your view is not being calculated as you are likely not a BARB panelist.

They seem focused on the viewing figures which is misleading. The way we consume shows is very different now than even a few years ago. My husband and I are both about 60 and we got rid of traditional cable years ago. Streaming is just much more economical and convenient. I guess viewing figures are the most obvious thing to bash as the actual content of the episodes has been substantially improved compared to recent seasons of Who. Just my opinion of course.

I suspect the next weeks rating fluctuate depending on the previous episode. A weaker story, not inspiring less ardent fans to drift away. Obviously hard to measure disengagement, but Audience appreciation factors must give some hint, even if they can't be broken down by the dedication of the individual viewer. We might see spins offs, developing depending on how certain elements land with the viewership. I'm sure they have competing outlines, ripe with opportunity, but choosing which one to choose must depend on engagement. I suspect a strong non-tardis character could be a good affordable foundation. Obviously UNIT featuring heavily in the series conclusion must have a range of options. The franchise is too significant to abandon easily, and even if it doesn't perform as well as hoped, I'm sure a season 3, will be comissioned, even if on a reduced budget.

There’s so much delay these days. I keep hearing about shows that I may have watched a couple of years ago suddenly trending on streaming platforms. Dot and Bubble whoever put the Trailer together did a terrible job, What the episode was to what they suggested was totally opposite, A Millisecond reaction shot of Ricky and the Doctor would have told people there's more going on here than Airheads and a nod to social media, The other Trailers have been good that was was terrible, The Nazi Barbie trended on Twitter for over a day, And a lot of reaction videos were edited they totally missed the fact this was a racist society until 2nd watching, It made others very uneasy also.

Where are the AAI figures? They’ve not been released and by all accounts they won’t be announced! Also there’s talk of future non release of viewing figures. These are pretty bad considering Jodie’s opening was over 10 million. Alright it’s a first doctor ep but this is huge drop and has kept dropping. Next series is likely to be worse. There’s no excuses to say tv is a different landscape now. The soaps do well still. This is Doctor Who, one of the biggest franchises of all time and the viewing figures are terrible. The fact they’re only getting around an extra 1 million in the 7 days isn’t great either. Word of mouth spreads and no one seems to be interested. Also it may get likes online but a like isn’t a viewing figure. I’m personally not a fan of this period of the show and I think it needs a break.

I also think this season is going pretty well! Though I do think we would have benefited from less RTD scripts. Getting Series 7B vibes as far as RTD is spreading himself thin with the amount of episodes he is penning. The more guest writers the better imo. Doctor Who has always been a great showcase of many different perspectives and backgrounds when it comes to having a diverse writing staff. Plus less episodes for RTD to write would only improve the quality of his episodes.

BARB shows the ratings for a week, not a day, so Doctor is numbed 24 that week, but Eastenders, BGT, Emmerdale and Corrie also release several episodes a week. In that top 23, 6 belong to BGT, 5 belong to Corrie, 4 belong to Eastenders, 5 belong to Emmerdale, with Race across the World, Sewing Bee and HIGNFY as other singular episodes. So really, Doctor Who isnt number 24, but 8th most watched thing that week if we only included the other shows as one episode like Doctor Who. @Face2East

Hi, according to BARB the highest 7day episode of Doctor Who this year was 4.059m. And by looking at the highest Eps of all UK Broadcast shows and never including multiples, that EP was the 43rd most watched program of the year so far. Even just counting dramas , its only the 17th most watched drama in the UK. And it's not as though the UK is drama adverse as 10 out of the top 15 are dramas, both long running (Death In Paradise, Vera, Silent Witness etc) and single series (like Mr Bates, Red Eye, After The Flood etc). With 7 months of the year to come and the final two episodes competing with a lot of international football drawing attention away, these numbers are only going to get worse. and I don't think that is a great return on a £10m per ep drama.

I hope you are feeling better. I also suffer from mental health problems (Asburgers & Depression), I don't know if you'd agree with me on this or not, but I find it quite annoying & depressing when you have one side of the Doctor Who or Star Trek, etc., fandom, with so-called fans being so overly negative on one side (i.e. the Doctor Who s Dead 'RIP-DoctorWho', lot) and the overly positive so-called fans (i.e. The so-called 'shills', or whatever people call them) who, think or pretend absolutely perfect Doctor and the people who make Doctor Who can do no wrong. There needs to be more honesty on both sides and more balanced with opinions. I don't dislike the idea of the Doctor being 'race' or 'gender' swapped. It was inevitable it might happen at some point. I just worry about the timing of it all, how it has been handled, and the reasoning behind this behind the scenes. I find it's good to listen to others' opinions on either side and not shut down different opinions even if I disagree or agree with them; I try to be open-minded as best as possible and try to be positive about things.
