This year the annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest offered families under coronavirus lockdown a way to make good use of their time, by building contraptions that are utterly useless, except to accomplish mundane tasks in the time-honored fashion of the legendary cartoonist. Correspondent Mo Rocca witnesses some of the craziest devices.

In the 90's, we had a Rube Goldberg style compute game called "The Incredible Machine". It was challenging to get each puzzle to work right, but it was fun.

As a young kid, I've always been fascinated by Rube Goldberg contraptions seen around houses and certain areas. As a matter of fact, when I was first interested in RU-vid, I remember seeing a video that came out at the time of Japanese Dominos, with two settings. It was a unique way of seeing how these sorts of domino and Goldberg contraptions could be expressed in different views from around the world. It can take a while to bridge, sort, and place it all out and about, but it is still worth doing when wanting to pass the time.

How fun is that? I would have liked to have been in their house to watch them build! Life lesson for mom? Buy 4 ladels and hide one of them!

I had never heard of this contest. Wallace of "Wallace & Gromet" fame has some wonderful devices, most of which misfire. Check 'em out.

I love the show, love Mo, and would never miss either. One request: on today’s show it was disappointing to see the winner of this year’s Rube Goldberg device sped up so greatly that it was impossible to see what was created. Slow it to half-speed just made it jerky. Would you please post as an online extra the winning Soap device, showing it at 24 FPS? Thank you, and thanks for years of brilliant, moving, fun programs.
