But again, the way John gives us the news definitely makes it more palatable

To be fair expert studies have shown that cousins having sex/having children is no more likely to produce genetic defects than two strangers doing it. That is provided the pairing only happens ONCE. When you get cousins/ Family members breeding together over and over again like in THAT"s when you the kind of screwed-up inbreeding you would often see in the royal family of Europe. I still find it kind of creepy (no doubt to the cultural norms in which I was raised) but to each their own. That being said, it should be pointed out that cousin incest differs from brother-sister incest and/or parent/child incest. This kind of incest has a MUCH HIGHER risk of causing genetic defects in children. I can probably google some links to studies if anybody is interested.
