Just wanted to offer, for those that may be interested, MAGPUL now has a 7.62x51 AICS Short Action Magazine that fits the Ruger Gunsite Scout. It is a 5rnd (6 if you remove an inner tab in the magazine). It fits a bit tighter than my Ruger polymers without any lateral movement. Some users, however, have reported needing to push a bit hard to get it to 'lock in' the rifle if you load it with the bolt closed. I am apparently lucky enough to have received two that didn't need this. Wanted to offer the information without coming off like an advertisement. On a side note: I really like what you did with the stock and tru oil. looks nice.

Very nice rifle, love the green in the laminate stock. I have the 5.56/.223 stainless barrel GSR, and it's an absolute pleasure. I switched out my steel box mags for the polymer magazines as well. Mounted a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 over the reciever, and changed out the flash hider for a true muzzle brake. Overall it's a good rifle, I shot it out to 600 yards with just the hold over reticle. Very accurate and I can get sub MOA all day at 100 yards.

Is there any ammo that your 5.56/.223 scout does not operate well with. Just ordered one and am excited to get to the range. Any suggestions for ammo to get a lot of shooting in with?

I just got my Ruger Gunsite(1st rifle I've ever owned) it was recommended by good friend who served as a Marine Corp scout sniper. Great video, plan on getting same bi-pod, and use the steel rings instead of the rail. Thanks for the great advice! Molen Labe

Great to see you make another video Michael. You had one of the best videos when this rifle first hit the market. I went the Smith Enterprise Muzzle break. I love it and it made a big change in the recoil as well as helping to keep the site picture once the rifle was fired. I went with the XS rail. It works for me. I put a vortex 1x4 pst on mine.. I shot a deer with it at 250 last year with a 180gr. soft point. I had a 100 yard dope on the rifle. I put the Dot rite on the spine and the round dropped perfectly into the lungs and heart. Pretty good for a 16' barrel. I love the finish you added to the stock. I may have to do that myself. Get a shooting video up bro!

Finally a positive review from someone who understands reloading and that just because a load works in one rifle doesn't mean it will in another. If you don't mind me asking. What is the magic load for you?

Thanks for sharing, I have one with a battle comp on it. I also have the xs rail with a 3x9 redfield revolution. the stock looks great with the tru oil have to give it a try. I also have no complaints with mine. Again thanks......

Love the GSR! good vid.. interesting to see u took off the XS rail. i considered taking mine off but I like the flexibility of adding a light and front sling mount ahead of my scope(i dont own an AR). cheek riser pad solved the height issue. keep the updates coming!

yeah they're a great rifle IMHO. I have one of the original models with laminate stock and 16" barrels in .308. The rifle looks good, handles well (I have a safari ching sling on mine which i love), and the detachable magazines (most of mine are the polymer mags) help to reduce excess weight. I've gone with a forward mounted long-eye relief scope (2-7x power) but am tempted to follow in your footsteps by removing the front rail and rear sight and putting on some rings and mounting a traditional scope rings and putting on a Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x with TMR reticle. I love the scope because it's lightweight it needs a new home now that I took it off an AR15 I had it mounted to. I would love to see an update video here at the end of 2016 since you've chronicled your journey with the Ruger GSR very well up to this point. Thanks and Cheers!

Sweet setup man! The GSR will be my next rifle, after being extremely happy with my Ruger AR556. I'm not sure if I want the 18" version or not.. and of course there's the newer synthetic version.

I just finished testing my new GSS at my local range and it is an excellent rifle. I purchased mine second hand in mint condition in fact it looked like the previous owner had bought it and then stored it away without having used it. He/she had removed both the front and rear iron sights which totally defeats the purpose of buying the scout. To my mind why wouldn't you just buy a bare barrelled M77 sporter? The scout comes with iron sights for a reason, a good reason. I replaced the scout rail with the XS full length rail and have mounted a basic rugged 3 - 9 x 40 Bushnell Banner on Leupold QD rings, this in my opinion is the most versatile setup. Also I ditched the plastic for an alloy bottom metal ( because I hate plastic and have had it fail previously on another rifle, actually finding cheap plastic on an iconic brand like Ruger was disappointing ). Again removing the iron sights seems counter productive to me. I hope I'm not coming across as high minded but I do find the practice bemusing. Admittedly they are a cool looking rifle in whatever arrangement you decide to have it in. Also as a side note I'm aware that these days it's not plastic it's "polymer" which is a pathetic euphemism for PLASTIC!

I love this gun and love your mods mine is practically the same. But you did turn me on to changing out the bird cage that’s the next thing I’ll do. Any recommendations on modding the bolt to make it smoother or less likely to hitch up. Honestly I’m used to it but may want an upgrade. Also the brass eject issue is that fixes with the polymer mags. After I fix those things up I’m gonna find a way to lighten the gun just a bit. I am a small average sized man and the weight is just a little more than I would like with the bipod.

Beautiful rifle. I am particularly drawn to laminate stocks because of strength, stability and stealth. The controlled feed Mauser action is superior to a regular run of the mill push feed bolt. If you have an AR-10 in 7.62 x 51/308 your ammunition can be interchangeable. The one thing I don't like about the Ruger is the use of the proprietary magazine. (Ruger ought to have engineered the scout to use the standard USGI magazines)

3 MOA? Those guys need to learn how to shoot. Mine gets 5rd groups of just under an inch @ 100yds, and I'm using a Burris Fastfire 3 dot sight.

I purchased mine second hand, in excellent condition with not a mark on it. It is the foreign model with no flash hider( Personally I consider flash hiders to be somewhat of a nonsense). The previous owner had removed the iron sights which is quite bizarre. If you want a rifle without iron sights why buy one with iron sights? I have fitted a full length pic rail with peep from XS. Above this I have a Bushnell Banner 3x9x40 dusk and dawn on Leupold QD rings. I think that this a nice setup. I have been asked about the fact that it was originally intended for a long eye relief scope, which is meant to provide better periferal vision. I counter this argument by pointing out that shooting with both eyes open with a 40mm objective lens scope provides plenty of vision. I believe in having backups especially with a rifle intended for serious action in the field, so this rifle is perfect for the task.

Ruger left that option open because it wouldn't hurt sales. I'm giving the Scout scopes an honest try but I'd rather not have to sell the rifle should that not work out. The optics consideration for the scout rifle seems to have come from Coopers experience in the african bush. The optics he wanted to use were little more than glorified red dots in a time where red dots were junk.

Rusty Shackleford I tend to prefer guns that are meant to be shot rather than looked at. And the Ruger is certainly a utilitarian firearm. I forgot to mention that my only serious disappointment is the plastic mag well. Luckily CD I make an alloy replacement which is on the way. Yes the bolt is quite sloppy but nothing to seriously impair operation. I love the stock which strangely has copped criticism from some ranks. The feel of the rifle just seems really good. Due to work commitments I have not had a chance to put it through its paces. First I will get the new bottom metal installed along with pillaring and glass bedding which I do to all my rifles.

Awesome video sir! Tell me what muzzle break did use on you rifle? I understand breaks generally make the muzzle report louder than a flash hider. Any advice, guidance &/or experience would be greatly appreciated sir! ROCK🎸ON

+michael wagner Thanks for the tips on the mods. This might be a silly question but do you know if there are any options for a polymer mag in 5.56 NATO? Thanks
@roykiefer7713
@roykiefer7713 6 лет назад
@Crawfoj: Yes, there is a 10 round .223 Rem/5.56x45mm polymer magazine available. It has a Ruger logo, however, I’m not sure who manufactures it for them. It’s available through the Ruger Shop or from retailers like Midway, Cheaper than Dirt, etc. I have had no problems with the factory steel magazines, but the polymer one are better.

Sub MOA at what distance?....150-225 yards?. I have been consistently shooting 5 shot groups within 1.5" at 250 yards or 750'. then I switched to a slightly cheaper ammo and out to 3"+ went my groups.

Serious question:. What are some reasons one would select the Gunsite Scout over the traditional M77, if they aren't going to be affixing a LER scout scope? Thanks in advance 👍
@leaddispenser9

Theres a lot of advantages. Detachable mag. But ain't as smooth cycling Iron sights. Short barrel. (Its handier trust me, nobody would rather take a rifle in the brush carbines are lighter and much more maneuverable. That's why they developed the car-15) but I think it's a good solid weapon by ruger. As a matter of fact I'm gonna try to post some videos of mine very soon. Hopefully within a month. Idk what scope I'm getting but WONT be a scout scope. Vortex ranger or strike eagle is on the top of the list. I want an illuminated recticle. The only thing I really would like is at least 3. polymer 10 round mags and 2 more 5 round. I would not use the steel they send with the gun because they do not sit as well. And the Magwell is plastic/polymer. I do have this same original rifle as this. Very very few rounds put through it. But the trigger is making me keep this gun forever. Very crisp. Fairly light. And the gun isn't light. I like that. 308s are a joy out of this carbine.. I do have one video shooting a propane tank at about 70 yards with irons lol

Until the day I die, I will not ever get a definitive answer as to what a scout rifle actually is, what is the criterea that must be satisfied in order to be considered a scout rifle...

If you don't mind me asking, what size scope rings was those in this video because I am doing the exact same setup. Mine came with a high and medium scope rings I think. One has 5 engraved on it and the other has 4. Is this what you have also? Thanks.
@Kyzsor
@Kyzsor 6 лет назад
DJ Nixon the rings that comes with the rifle are 25mm. Ruger offers 30mm rings, too. Sometimes the customer service changes the 25mm rings for 30mm rings for free, just ask

I used a Minox 3-9x50 with the factory scope rings an it fits. Diameter of the tube was 25mm and diameter of the objectiv was 62mm. There was 1 up to 2mm space between scope an barrel

do i see your weapon right that your scope location may hinder your bolt action looks mighty close ; and your ghost ring cannot be used at all since the front of scope so close to barrel ; good video though ; reason i like my scout is the use multiple scope forward mounted when needed as well as quickly use the iron sight ; seems to be a fair video
@mikejohn2712
@mikejohn2712 7 лет назад
pagan poet prophet I have my rifle set up as a precision bush backpack rifle with no intention of using the iron sights at this time. also there is no interference between the bolt handle and the scope. Also if you look closely there is no ghost ring installed.

+eric kinney the rings I used are the ones included. my scope objective is 50 mm and there is barely enough room to fit a business card between the barrel. the 40 won't be as close but will still be close none the less

the gun is sub moa with someone who is capable of shooting sub moa. A person that shoots 3 in groups should buy a shotgun and stop crying about their rifles ability to shoot.
