The pickleball world could look a lot different in 2025. Rumors have begun to swirl about a potential new paddle certification process under the UPA's new 501c3 USA Pickleball competitor, the UPA-A. If the rumors have any truth to them, could they lead to consumers paying even more for paddles?
Thomas and Zane debate who won last week’s MLP trade frenzy and share the details from a visit to Proton HQ. Catch the new episode here.

Wow, I'll bet this will have a ripple effect on the non-pro's playing in the tournaments on the back courts. The 3.5's that are just having fun playing in the tournaments but paying their own way. A lot of these people use the smaller brands. If they have to have a PPA sanctioned paddle, I'll bet these tournaments will shrink significantly. I'll bet the merchandising will drop significantly also, wrist bands to shoes and everything in between. If they ain't playin', they ain't watching pickleball either.

You nailed it. Except that it seems like you're putting all the blame on the UPAA. What about paddle manufacturers who are gouging us on their products? I hate that this sport has become expensive, but it's mostly, imo, because of the exploitive marketing, not because of the regulatory organizations. I'm playing in a tournament in a couple of weeks. It'll probably be the last. ($145 for one event.) And once the paddles I have right now wear out, (I have several) I'm NOT going to spend $300 on a new one. I hope there are still alternatives at that time.

Zane. Why not give the Diadem ball a honest try. I have been using them with our recreational bangers in hot weather and they have not cracked or softened up. I even left them in my car and still no problem. The other ones are the new Gamma CHUCK ball survived a tournament with no cracks or going out of shape.

I'd like to propose trying a simple rule change in our game that could fundamentally alter the current pickleball game in many ways. This rule change mostly likely could result in a real reduction in the number of bizarre pickleball injuries each year. Instead of having only both the serve and the serve return require a bounce - I propose we try to extend this rule so that it also applies during the entire duration of the volley where you always let the ball bounce once before you return it back (like in table tennis). This change would disallow taking the ball off the air eliminating a lot of those dangerous speedups and banger smashes which in turn drive a lot of unintended injuries. It would also reduce the need to quickly run up to the kitchen (also a source of many injuries). The need for ever faster speeds will also be reduced which means paddle companies may well then be more driven to produce paddles that instead focuses more on control (and spins too). Thoughts?

Why would any brand spend that much just so a pro could use one of their paddles? That would mean the pro player would have to be responsible for 300k in sales or it isn’t worth certifying your paddle.

Do the players realize that 100k going to the upaa on a money grab is 100k less the paddle manufacturers can spend on sponsorship dollars? When will the players unite? The ppa app mlp etc etc are killingl the goose that lays the golden eggs.
@pickleballer1729
@pickleballer1729 Месяц назад
I strongly disagree! The paddle manufacturers are raising their prices to ridiculous levels. Why should we be forced to pay $200 - $300 for something that costs about $10 to make? And how much of that $100,000 do you think would go to sponsorships? Very little, I would think, but even if most of it did, that still leaves all the money and power in the hands of the people who are exploiting us for big bucks. And I'm starting to get a little irritated by people who play with paddles that all they have to do is stick their paddle in front of the ball and it rockets past me way faster than anyone could hit it with a legit paddle. What's next? Little "turbo" buttons on paddles?

@@pickleballer1729 Hey Baller. My thoughts in order: 1. you're not forced to pay that kind of money. The market is flooded with decent to very good paddles selling at far more reasonable prices. 2. Not sure how much of the 100K would flow into sponsorship dollars but don't see any reason it should go to one league. 3. Agree that these gen 3 paddles are ridiculous. Personally, I find it hard to believe that Joola didn't know they were crossing the line when they built a trampoline with a handle.

@@barryfriedman3223 Good points. I would add: Point 1) True, there are plenty of affordable options _now_ . Between the gouging of the main makers, and the possibly unaffordable fees that might come down to the off brands, my concern is about the future. 2) Yeah, who knows. There's just too much unknown about that. 3) I couldn't agree more! Joola had to know, and given that, it seems very much like a bully move.

I have to say I was really surprised by Zanes comments on the subject. I understand that paddle compa ies do not want knock offs seeing sold....but a 100k entry to UPA will not stop that the knock offs aren't sponsoring pros already. The only people being hurt is the middle level and smaller brands. As well paying 100k means I get to tell you to pass my paddles. We'll have more and more powerful paddles as Joola runs the show. USaP needs to charge slightly more so that they have the funding to actually enforce their rules and defend themselves against companies that want them to overlook their failings. An independent non profit should be looking after paddles...not UPA.

If you are just playing recreationally or in local/club tournaments, I would just buy a paddle directly from the manufacturers in China with your own design/branding. If you know the specs of the paddle you like then just find a manufacturer in China and order a few paddles. With shipping the cost will be less than these $200+ paddles that will probably break down within a year. If you know, you know.

If this is true “How does a Tour able to do things like this?” Does this happen in other sports? Can someone confirm whether tennis or any other racquet sport charges a manufacturer annual fees for racquets. If it’s not the tour doing this how can there be two paddle governing bodies? UPA-A and USPA. The next closet paddle sport to Pickleball is Padel. I wonder if Padel has this/these problems.

USAP is clearly wrong in the way they approached this, and should be sued out of existence. Selkirk has acted in the sleaziest way possible in jumping on this s#!t show. Joola has been very good in approaching the problem, I returned two of three of my gen 2 paddles and keeping one because I do like playing with it. On the $100k topic:seems like the same people that are OK with USAP changing regs after the fact, don’t want to see another organization raise the bar through enforced testing. That cost money and means introducing fees to pay for it. It doesn’t necessarily impact amateur play, but if you want to have pro visibility and they want to charge for it, either pay to play or don’t.

@BenjaminAndersonPickleball
@BenjaminAndersonPickleball Месяц назад
I'm against this new 100K "barrier to entry" but I don't think you understand Zain's point. If the governing body doesn't have as many paddles to certify, it's easier to make sure paddles don't sneak through and get certified when they shouldn't. It isn't that Joola is a small company, and this fee will keep them out. It's that so many paddles (by small companies) get submitted that USAP is struggling to properly test all the paddles being submitted.
@WisdomInsightReality

The UPA has correctly recognized that an investment must be made to create a responsive, professional organization (UPA_A) to govern pickleball rules and equipment. Someone has to pay and that's us folks. Hence, the fees rumored to be levied for paddle certification. The alternative is to continue relying exclusively on the well-meaning, but underfunded, non-profit, slow and bumbling USAP. Maybe there is still a place for USAP, in paddle testing, but they need more money to upgrade their Equipment Standards department.
@trumpisastump9382
@trumpisastump9382 Месяц назад
But this should not come at the cost of innovation and cost competition that results from the inclusion of the small upstart paddle companies. The $100,000 annual fee will stifle competition, which will lead to fewer paddle choices, less innovation, and higher prices for the consumers. The benefactors would only be the large paddle companies.
@harryhoople1684
@harryhoople1684 Месяц назад
@@trumpisastump9382 Someone has to pay for the R&D and the manufacturing cost of the test equipment that measures the COR (power) and spin of each paddle. The companies that supply those funds will expect some benefit from their investment and will want to prevent "freeloading" from upstart companies.

I don't see where the APP is a problem. They had players like Zane, JW, Jorga, Dylan, the Johnson Twins, Anna Bright and Parris and a few others that left for the big contracts. Wonders what paddles they are using now. Could be companies who can drop $100 grand per year.
@johnsanchez2589
@johnsanchez2589 Месяц назад
UPA-A is just kissing big pickles…pickle? USAPA really only needs to retest and follow the paddle companies that claim new tech. The so called catalog brands will most likely pass testing and retesting because they have more to lose. Sorry, but I don’t give a rats ass about the pro scene. ROI in the pro scene will always be negative dollars. Boring to watch but fun to play type of game.
@rickiezzi7753
@rickiezzi7753 Месяц назад
What Zane isn’t taking into consideration is that everybody wants to play with a PPA approved paddle. Whether you’re amateur or pro. You’re increasing the cost to every consumer by adding exorbitant fees that aren’t necessary and are just a money grab. The big paddle companies will take over and then allow less options at a more costly rate for the consumer bad for everybody. Zane has this wrong.
