The Runaway Camper

While I was waiting for my Runaway Camper to be built, I was curious about what I had gotten myself into. So I started looking at videos on RU-vid to see what I could find out about them. I saw a lot of walk-through videos, where people would show a virtual tour around the outside & inside. These videos were very informative and I appreciated what I saw. But it seemed to me that I never saw anyone actually camping in one. So when I started making my own videos... my goal was to show what it was like to spend a few days in a Runaway Camper. I have received comments stating that I made the viewer feel as if they were there! I'm glad to hear that I may have reached my objective. Here's my latest attempt to do that again and show what a GREAT time my dog (Daisy) and I have in the Cool Camp!!!

Instead of AC heater, I use hot water bottles as my heat source at night. I heat water in a kettle on the campfire or propane stove, pour water into 2 or 3 hot water bottles, and add them in my sleeping bag. On colder nights, I heat extras and store them in a Coleman insulated chest until needed. Great idea; works well. Rubber hot water bottles are about $8 each, Walmart or Amazon. ~ Steven, Utah

I used the hot water bottle on my hikes, when I was into backpacking. Somehow, now that I've moved on to camping in the Cool Camp, I forgot about that. What a great reminder! Thanks Steven... I'll try it out on my next trip.

I thoroughly enjoyed that! You camp like me, to relax and enjoy the scenery. I'm too old to do much hiking and climbing, but give me a book, some water running nearby, and Im happy as can be. @@davidhaden4363 One serious question: bears? Im scared of big wild animals, like any sensible person. I think I'd expect to run into them out in the woods like that. What do you use to protect yourself and Daisy?
@davidhaden4363
@davidhaden4363 Месяц назад
I was told by a forest ranger that Daisy herself is the best bear protection you can have. According to him, bears hate to be barked at and will run away. Of course I also carry bear spray and have read many tips on being bear aware. So far... I've never encountered one!

Great videos David. Keep them coming. One of these days I have to revisit Colorado. I am planning to take my Cool Camp this fall, with my dog Dakota. and travel along route 66 starting in Arizona and ending in Chicago. Then return to my home in Jacksonville, FL. The last time I drove this route was in the 1960s when I was in the military. This should prove to be interesting.

I bought a Navigator, now called the COOL CAMP, second hand a couple of years ago. I am never going to buy anything larger! I use the old fashioned HOT ROCK heater. I went to an antique auction in NY ste years ago and bought 2 antique rock slabs with metal handles...like they used to use as foot warmers in the sleighs. I carry a little home made rocket stove with me for fast fire cooking. Burns twigs and small scrap wood pieces. I have never traveled to COL...but now I think that you have inspired me to head west. AWESOME video! THANK YOU!

Thanks Janis! I usually tell people that the Cool Camp is really only good for sleeping in and that everything else has to be done outside... which is where I want to be anyway. I love the idea of your heater system and stove. Sometimes the "Old way of doing things" is the best! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. If you get a chance, I highly recommend heading west and doing some Colorado camping. I'm sure that you will have a great time. Thanks for the comment and watching!!!

Is there a quick and easy way to remove the AC unit when planning a winter camp? Best to leave behind in garage. No point to carry it when no plan to use it, plus lower tow weight, plus close off the vent's air opening with a pillow or blanket and increase insulation value of the Runaway Camper.

Loved the beautiful scenery .. and as for the cowboy cooking with the dutch oven.. they are designed to go in the fire and you can heap hot coals on top if you want to bake say some biscuits ... and to control the heat you just move the coals off the top and /or away from around the oven as it sits in the coals..
