Runaway WaveRunner at the Boat Ramp! NO RULES @ Shoreline! 

If you're not in the tow vehicle or standing on the dock the PFD should be on. If the boat, water maggot(pwc), is in gear the lanyard should be attached. More preventable accidents/drownings happen at the dock/ramp than 20 miles out. Friends son bought his $110K bass boat. Did his break in so he could do his 1st tournament on Sat. Running 68mph the steering rod broke with the outboard flopping right, boat did a 68 mph right square corner throwing him and his buddy over the port side. Knocked out, their PFD kept them face up and the lanyard killed the outboard or it would of circled around and got them. Cams on the bow, transom, console. I was there for the 3rd viewing. Afterwards he tossed the SD cards in the fireplace, wasn't going to watch 1 more time.

@@Ray56z I appreciate the comment on PFD, but I’m not wearing one in this boat in the summer. It’s too hot here and the boat tops out at 37, usually 34 though. I understand the risk and am willing to take it in this particular boat and situation. Sometimes you got to make a judgment call on certain things. @@royb.1441 I've 3, sized from 15' to 26', I just wear them even in the Florida sun, even while I'm working on the salt in the Florida sun. At speed I wear a type 1, as will anyone onboard. Anchored/spot lock/trolling I wear a type 3 kayak, have no onboard rule for others then, but I do encourage. While working I also wear the type 3, pulling traps, netting, scooping customers. And I've swam across the Mississippi, got tossed in the 1st time at age 3. My reasoning is I grew up on the DesMoines, Mississippi, later the Missouri, and numerous private and public lakes. At 8 I noticed someone along the dam of our private 84 acre house lake, about a half mile down from the house. Looked like an adult and someone else my age in a 10-12' aluminum rowboat. Later I looked down and seen only the smaller one, that was jumping around in the boat, so I told dad. We jumped in a truck and and when we got there a classmate of mine said his dad fell in. We dove but couldn't find him. Later learning-while the county team drug the lake-that my classmate had caught a fish, swung it to dad to take off the hook, didn't have it close so dad stood up to grab it and fell in due to his ol' brogans leather soles on wet metal. On the Mississippi I've never gone over the side, but even back then I was glad to have a PFD on when the wakes off a 3 tug unit went upstream while on the water in a canoe, or one of the inboards. I've yet to find anything in the gulf to match the wakes off those loaded 3 tug barges going upstream.

When I moved to Florida I had to wait 2 years for 2 states to get together on boats, outboards, and trailers titles. Shore fished a lot. My favorite place for catching was about 40 yards to the side of a ramp and it's dock. I also discovered when the bite was slow it provided plenty of entertainment. Ramp is about as perfect as possible. The static dock was rebuilt after Michael and the company got it to high without cross-ties down low for low tides, and it's also further from the side of the ramp then it should be-especially for those newbies thinking they should launch nearest the dock as possible. I've missed bull reds and gator trout due to laughing so hard. And as Big Dan says-I no longer provide assistance unless it looks like a life and death situation, let em back 25-30 times, let em tug and push on a boat all they want, let em swim after a wrongly tied boat.

I had a roller trailer for my last boat. No issues but always mindful to keep security chain connected! Almost lost it once on a steeper ramp. New boat has a bunk trailer and it’s been just fine.
