You can't blame prof. Pardy, really. He just tried to present the idea he doesn't agree with the best he could, it's not his fault the idea itself is bad. As is said at 1:14:45, he was playing devil's advocate, since no other law professor was willing to argue against Peterson.

Notice how, in his intro, he *blazes* past "hate speech," without any clarification whatsoever, as an example of not having "real free speech" to start with. But it is this "hate speech" thing that is the crux of the argument against enforcing C16.

If gender can be obscured by 71+ pronouns, then how about race? If someone now wants to be called 3rd gen Chinese, 4th gen white, 3rd generation black, do we then forcefully use these ridiculous names? How about beauty? No one can say if someone is pretty bc the word offends the ‘others’. How about words like obese or handicapped, any word that describes a person such as hair type, clothing ? Where do we draw the line of this language policing?

36:15 _"The point is that gender should be irrelevant in the classroom, just like race should be irrelevant in the classroom. "_ This is the point where Bruce loses the argument, because this is an admittance that the subjective identity is irrelevant in the classroom and an argument for androgyny. Thus is an argument against the law which states that gender identity is not only relevant, but of such great importance that punishment can be applied to those who do not acknowledge the subjective identity of the individual over the objective identity of the individual. What we have left is objective identity, which custom has it as a binary and not a trinary. You might have also noticed Bruce's use of "it" as the place mark for the unknown neutral identity, a pronoun that if used would see him hauled before the courts due to the law he is defending. Any gender neutral person in the audience could have taken offence and made a complaint, even though the remark wasn't specific to them, but it was to their identity.

I do it all the time apparently, I get called all sorts of nasty labels just for pointing out when the opposition is right or has a valid perspective. I've argued against atheists on the question of whether atheism is a religion, and got called a christian fundamentalist (I'm an atheist btw, I'm just not into the philosophy of atheism because there shouldn't be one, it's a state of being and not a moral compass). I've argued pro life, though I'm pragmatically pro choice and got called a Christian fundamentalist. I've Argued Mohamed was not a paedophile, I won't repeat what it was I was called. (Yeah he was a kiddy fiddler, but we must be careful not to judge the past on modern moral norms.) But then I argue against my own positions all the time and I hate it when I'm right.

can anybody help me out? what i keep missing from the debate is the timing when a pronoun is used, a personal/gendered pronoun isn't used when speaking to someone because then "you" is used. he or she for example is used when you refer to someone mainly when talking to someone else to make sure that someone other than the refferred person understands who you are talking about, and isn't even about how a person is. how often do you refer to someone you hardly know at all? exactly, you do not refer to people to communicate with them, but with reference to them and the point is not that they follow you, but the person you are talking to. the point here though is why have the male female split at all, i'd like to say because of the universal average differences between men and women (or even the universal concept of a difference between men and women) which occurs in almost every language accross the world, bu this point wouldn't strike in social construction theory.

Here is a generic political debate question that has been split into two parts: "Would it be good and kind and respectful for people to treat each other by performing action X?" "Should the government force people to perform action X?" Many political debates can be properly fit into the framework of these two questions, but people often fail to separate ideas into these two questions and just operate as if they are one and the same, ie., "If it is right that people should perform action X, then the government should force people to perform action X." If people could properly understand how a free society should be governed, then they might realize that the answer to the first question can easily be a 'yes', in many cases, but (as long as, and especially if) the answer to the second question should almost ALWAYS be 'no'.
@Gruuvin1
@Gruuvin1 6 лет назад
Bruce Pardy seemed to eventually divide the question into its two parts, at some point in the "debate", and so it seems he began to fully agree with JBP's stance, which is not at all concerned with the first question and 100% concerned with the second question, "Should government force..." I think Pardy should be praised for doing so--he was honest about it! I wish debate would happen like that more often!

For the other guy to make the case that any of these is in his word reasonable is a ridiculous statement. The fact that he thinks the law will stop when the state gets involved is naive. The fact that they are even talking about this shit is ridiculous without bounds to me. Omg with all that is happening in the world this is the shit they are finding to do and any person that plays in this game is immature, childish and I would say is scarred in there life somewhere that probably has nothing to do with the outlash that they are basing there hurt on. This is a sorrowful time in history that people are this messed up which goes to show how great life is in the West for people to have these ideas and identity problems. If life was a hundred years ago would be dealing with life to the point it wouldn't even matter about this foolishness

My father once met a lord, and the lord said to him "I am lord such and such ... you may call me ..." he responded "I am ..., you may call me Master ...". The point being that the lord thought he was more important than my father was and that arrogance and egotistical concept is contemptible. I have met the Queen of England twice before, and yes I did call her "Mam" that was out of my respect for her, however, if I had called her "Lizzy" I would not have been thrown in prison or had any repercussions over than not being invited to any other royal meeting. I have lots of friends who are 'ladyboys' and I have no problem with calling them a 'she'. If anyone insists on me calling them some gender neutral pronoun, that displays a high level on self-importance, and that they have a chip on their shoulder and have a serious SJW political stance and view point on life. I don't want to know anyone like that and would just ignore them. This is mass indoctrination that goes against the laws of logic and common sense. When he said "I am a lawyer", in this capacity, that tells me that he has sold his soul to the devil, i.e. he knows he can make money out of this b.s.

The resolution is worded incorrectly, besides the revisions Jordan Peterson suggested. The "pronouns by which...[people] will be addressed" refers to second-person pronouns, e.g., "you" in English. Instead, it should have been worded "pronouns by which...[people] will be referred to."

The problem is that the courts and the Ontario human rights committee are not as intelligent as what Jordan is suggesting. They are functioning on old habitual thinking. Many have sat before the committee to profess their concerns about this issue but the bill was still passed. It was always going to be. The governments are largely run by antiquated and apathetic people that are only interested in lining their pockets. The notion that non binary gender pronouns are seeded into the linguistic territory of the professional workplace is the start of an insidious form of re-engineering.

The necessity of categorization is a function of language. Our language structure and customs demand the personalization of pronouns as an expediency for social contact and communication. The problem with being vague or indeterminate is that no one can guess what the hell you desire to be called. Even in cases where it seems obvious you can deeply offend someone who doesn't present in the way they identify. This is arduous and not possible to rationalize without rendering all personal pronouns obsolete and making everyone an IT. Otherwise there is no avoiding offense. A more rational solution is to be gracious and kindly inform folks if you prefer a different pronoun and be patient as they try to ignore thousands of years of beneficial conditioning to accomodate your desires. If you can't handle this... sorry, you must grow up. Never going to happen in the lifetime of anyone breathing presently.

This enormity of all this will only become apparent through the washroom conundrum and nothing more. In a classroom room of say 30 students, all of which demand, by law, to be identified by a certain pronoun. This is only directed at gender identity for this example btw. This isn’t a problem to any professor or teacher as they can address the individuals by their first names, whatever they want these to be. A persons gender identity isn’t something that has to come up at all, so you don’t have to play that particular game. Where you will start seeing issues are when an individual goes to the bathroom or washroom and doesn’t identify with the symbols that delineate between one gender and another. This won’t be as simple as slapping another sticker on the door either because then you are associating gender identities together and the law clearly states that you must respect each identity individually and if you don’t, the law machine, not unlike the dragon Smaug from The Hobbit, will open an eye, then the other and before you know it, reign fire down from above. Washrooms! You heard it here first.

All credit to Pardy for taking this on, but out of the gate he was on a hiding to nowhere. If anything he demonstrated how ridiculous it is to suggest that using a persons pronouns should be enforced by law. All you have to do is think about this for a short amount of time to realise that it isn't about pronouns, it's about power and control.

I don't understand why nobody mentions the elephant in the corner playing banjo. This is a legal precedence were the government id able to force the public to use specific words to address an specific group. With this precedence, what will stop the government to say, you have to call this other group this other way? It happened before, Nazis forced Germans to call Jews in a specific way, Stalin did the same with the bourgeois, what about calling first nation members on an specific way? blacks? whites? Latinos? Asians? etc? what if i want to be call My Lord and Master? or your Highness? Also, as a Lawyer, how can't you be concerned about the correct gender classification? If your defendant is a legal male transgender biological woman that's being sent to jail, would you let her go to a male prison? or the other around, transgender biological man, would you let him go to a female prison? What if they are traveling with a male sex passport being a biological women, would you like your defendant to go to a foreign third-world male prison ?

@@CGKA2020 thanks. i guess as an american male, maybe I'd prob get more flack in pubs in general and esp once once has downed a drink or two. then again, i can imagine non-american males flirting with american women in bars the same way (bush/trump blah blah...) as a way to tease and start a convo :P Cheers~

Excellent discussion gentleman. It’s sad that people cannot see the constant steps to the already known historical outcome. Perhaps we should have everyone come forward and claim their chosen pronoun and identity so when the other comes to power it will be easy to identify them for the gas chambers or mass graves first. Of course elected govt run to make society better.

My pronoun is the entire US Constitution, CamelCased so it's a single word. Failure to refer to me as such is hate speech, and I'll have you prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Easy, just call the students, student+lastName and the professor professor+lastName. But comparing trans issues, which in the west is a fight mostly between [people of the color which ought not to be named], with the race issues -caused not only by white men but the other groups that now want to claim oppression at the same level and even black people sometimes- is beyond my understanding... It is hypocritical beyond belief... But glad I found this as late as I did anyways...

Love Prof. Bruce Pardy's surgically precise, logical approach. He reminds me of Hunter S. Thompson in a strange way. Prof. Jordan Peterson is passionate and pulls a few power moves given that he is not on his home turf. He modifies the debate proposition on the blackboard and then erases it. He then refers to it twice even though he has erased it which is slightly awkward but still effective. #12Rules #LobsterPower

English grammar allows for the pronouns to be: Him/her/they in sentence building and syntax. Why is this not just acceptable?

Here's another thing about "hate speech", maybe the purveyors of that speech are actually NOT horrible people. Maybe they're hurting. For all the compassion these pc feminist types claim to have, they don't seem to have any understanding of the idea that people who disagree with them are people too. I had a friend whose father was murdered by two black junkies who simply wanted to take his car for a joy ride. He was twelve at the time and became a racist within a few years of that. If he were black and his father's murderers were white, people would be far more understanding, and maybe my friend wouldn't have taken that path if he felt like he could talk to people about the types of things he was thinking.

I hate the argument that gender is completely subjective. to argue it you have to play around with definitions of he, she, man, woman.

Astonished by the fake linguist at the end who appears to not be familiar with send person singular and plural linguistic history... Or the function of pronouns vs proper nouns. Embarrassing. Names give specificity. Pronouns remove specificity. Anyhow, there is one word in Tagalog that would be a lovely fit for English in the third person singular. Sya. He, she, sya. In Tagalog, this is something akin to the Chinese "ta", which has 6 written forms for different representations, but one vocalizations. Indeed, both Tagalog and Chinese native speakers often trip on gendered pronouns if not careful for much this reason. Sya is a gender neutral pronoun. It sounds fairly similar to existing pronouns while still remaining unique and it's short. The problem is that as Peterson says, the issue here is not about pronouns. They don't care about pronouns or language. They want to control speech or to signal themselves as something special. Narcissism is behind it, not altruistic desires for linguistic precision and elegance. Hence there is no drive to get a single word to do the job and it would never take hold.

Anyone else find it interesting that the wording on the board uses a pronoun (they). So isn't that syntactically broken in the first place? Would have to be reworded to not use pronouns. "A person has the legal right to decide the pronouns by which that person will be addressed" And then it's not completely clear to which person "that" is referring to. The subject hasn't been clearly defined in that sentence. I think it's an important thing to not gloss over. How are you to address people in public speech by group (they/them) without knowing the individuals' preferred pronouns?
@davidarmor1554
@davidarmor1554 3 года назад
False characterization of the law as requiring speech instead of prohibiting speech. The law does not require you to use pronouns. The law forbids you to use pronouns that someone doesn't accept. You do not HAVE to use third-person pronouns. IF you DECIDE to use third-person pronouns, THEN you are forbidden from using them to misgender people. But you can do perfectly well referring only to people in the third person explicitly, without the use of pronouns.

Audio volume is too low. This makes the video largely useless and unusable. Since I assume the purpose of those uploading this video is to disseminate the content of this debate so that useful benefit can be gained by those who watch it, I would urge that audio quality be paid more attention in any future videos uploaded to RU-vid. This video might have many more than the paltry 722 views it does as I write this if its audio quality were up to standard.

I have a doubt about that. If a man presents himself as a woman, or vice versa, that is deception. It's dishonest. Should we respect dishonesty?
