@@4autodetail718😂 so true. My dad let my aunt borrow his s580 for a long distance trip and when they came back after 4 days she took the car to a self wash and used the broom mop and micro swirled the shit out of the paint. My dad was livid and for an old man I never see him mad but he was cursing 🤬. Even though he had a kamikaze ism 3.0 coat on it it still got light swirls throughout every painted surface my aunt mopped. Dad ended up paying 1200 out of his own pocket because my aunt refused to cover the paint correction and thought he was overreacting. Moral of the story don’t trust stupid people with your vehicle.

Again a very informative video,I hope there’s still lot to come! If one day I have the ‘balls’ to sand I would definitely go for the system with the foam interface we got to see here.I think it’s more safe to do than handsanding. I really like the improvement in texture but you have to do the entire car then and that would take a lot of time! It’s unbelievable that Jason didn’t took more paint of the treated areas. It shows that sanding is not as dangerous as we all would think.
@CroIntr00X

actually he showed what you can do with sanding alone, with sanding and leveling texture. There's a even safer metod for removing orange peel, by using Velvet/Denim pads.

That foam backed sanding pad is a must have in your bag, if you're a bowler. I have been using those in the 180-4000 grit depending on the lane conditions (to gain or lessen the hook on the ball early or down the lane) on league play nights. very little water is all thats needed, damp like he did it, never knew can be used on car paint....Learn something new every day.....Cool video...Thanx

Matt, there’s little information re: proper protection of panel edges and sharp/hard panel lines from burn-through using tape, pad selection, tool pressure, etc. I’ve noticed that some detailers essentially ignore panel edges and run the polisher across panel gaps without concern. Personally I like to tape off panel lines without encroaching too far on the panel being polished. Do you have any information you might share on this topic? I was hoping that this was going to touched on in this video. Thanks

Excellent video. Particularly interesting where the difference can be seen between 1500/3000 and 3000 alone. For compounding out the sanding scratches, I would reach straight for the Mille. I believe it works quicker than the LHR15 used here; more power, less heat, easy to get a consistent movement, smaller orbit getting right to the edges of the panel.

Well, in the scenario you described, you'd definitly want a professional that has experience/knowledge to attack a restoration like that. 1) They will tell you the cold-hard truth that it's not going to be completely removed (minus methods involving paint, clear) 2) Most likely, they'll do a great job, not burn through the paint, and exceed expectations.

Hey Matt, I’ve been following your channel for a while. These videos are so informative, I thank you !! Just an idea. But I was thinking it would be awesome if you took this info home and did a project where you bought a few new-ish painted panels and tested how many times a person on average could compound and polish until they burned through the clear. Having one of those depth gauges with be awesome too see the progress of getting through clear. I think this would be an awesome test. You can also test that sanding technique shown in this video ?

Zach Hicks used to do full cars by hand to get the nubs and orange peal out, on thousands of cars with fresh paint and old paint! Fresh paint is so much softer and easier to deal with! It will knock down faster and melt like butter when polishing, plus you knew how much clear you were dealing with. Now you have meters that tell you how much clear is actually on the car and basically telling you how to approach it. If this car was maintained, meaning that it has been buffed and polished over the years they probably would have hand wet sanded.

That’s what you called color sanding in the bodyshop, after you paint the car to remove orange peal which he calls texture , and debris that get in the clear , just make sure you have enough of the clear coat to do this .
@ginginthing
@ginginthing 5 лет назад
This is a very well done video and I know the clear coat had to be knocked down in order to remove the scratches and achieve this great finish. I have a brand new car that has mild orange peel that is driving me crazy, and I want to flatten the clear coat as little as possible to improve the look. My question is, since I keep cars for more than 15 years, what will this do to the life of the paint job as far as UV protection etc. ? Will the clear coat start to peel sooner than if left alone and if so, how much sooner? Is the clear coat life in a direct ratio of how much clear coat is removed and what percent of clear coat is typically removed during a mild flattening? I heard clear coat is between 50 and 70 microns. What is the depth of a mild scratch or mild orange peel valley ?

nobody here thought with brain, so here's why. Panel had paint damage in terms of not so deep scratches, and tons of swirls (those are easily removed). He just knocked off high spots with sanding to get rid of orange peel, then componud + polish. That didn't took too much clear coat indeed. If he had really deep scratches then he will remove much more clear coat over scratch itself + surrounding area to level out.

Don't let fear hold you back and pull out the rotary.

I learned about hand sanding vs machine sanding. Machine is better!

I would use a rotary polisher for cutting the sandpaper lines....

Would've been interesting to see the paint depth measurements before treating the area that was worked on, to gauge how much clear was removed, if any. Great video!

They left the middle portion untouched, Jason refers to it as the "virgin spot"

I know, but they never showed paint depth after correction, in the corrected area.

As I just rewatched it, he takes 5 measurements 1) virgin, 2) 3000/polished, 3) 1500, 4) compounded, 5) polished....so what part of the correction are you referring to that they didn't measure ?

So I guess this process counterintuively (to me, at least) preserves more clear coat than going at it all day with a rotary or DA alone to achieve the same result (if that's even possible)? Now I feel like I need to get the whole air sanding setup to perfect my 2015 Chevy Equinox that I bought used for $15,000. It's as much a disease as any other kind of addiction. Thank God for Harbor Freight. 🤣

The rupes polishes and compounds tend to dust a lot, I was polishing some interior panels and the dusting was quite bad and as I can see here the dusting is bad
