This song is a brilliant roller-coaster of human emotions: triumph, elation, despair, horror, happiness, sadness, agony, bewilderment, inspiration. RIP Neil Peart.
He definitely is the documentary of them is a good story of them. He plays la villa strangiato so perfect it's insane and the intro. Alex is the whole reason why I picked a guitar. Alex is easily in my top 5 for sure. The rhythm, lead, and soloing is outstanding. You cannot sit there and tell me that rush is one of the greatest rock n roll musicans to walk this planet... Like it said in the documentary if you dont like your just a old fart.
I once ran back into a burning building to rescue my Rush tickets. Days later, as we climbed the hill to the arena, we felt the energy of 6000 other Rush fans, all climbing, elevating, coming together, coalescing. There is nothing like the energy at a Rush concert. Such a powerful, positive, dynamic frequency. Yes comes close.
This sounds familiar. If you borrowed it you used it in it's proper context by sharing it and remind us again of it. If you wrote this yourself you're friggin" awesome!!
I would say Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush are just as good and another great Canadian power trio (and don't forget Triumph too) . Jamal's mind would be blown by Frank Marino's guitar playing
I’m 56 and it’s just fun to watch people getting it for the first time. I’ve kinda taken this music for granted for over 40 years. It’s just how I’ve lived. I never really took RUSH for granted, they were just always there. 18 times live! ROCK PRIVILEGE!
59 my self !!! Some kids in our high school thought we were strange for listening to them back then, I feel privileged to have seen my share of concerts too. As they matured I matured with them always in my ears.
57 and I'm right with you, I remember hearing working man and fly by night- in the mood like it was just yesterday :) But that was ages ago in the cretaceous period lol Plus everybody had kick ass stereo systems back then, with lots of power and huge speakers. I don't know how the paint stayed on the walls from the vibration of bass. It's really great seeing youngsters discovering bands like Rush, when rock music was king and quality. Btw, my one buddy had a bedroom above his parents garage with a sloped wall across from his marantz and we used to jam out and blow fire from lighter fluid against that wall lol. Just like Gene Simmons - good times. Rush shows- haven't missed one.
One of; that's for sure... But, Rush is NOT rock and roll, just because they're in that Hall of Lame... Rush is an uptempo prog band I put it (this album) up there with Relayer, Presence, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Starless and Bible Black, Selling England by the Pound et al..Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings are their Magnum Opus's.
@@godbluffvdgg DUDE ..Back in the 60s when Rush formed and 70s when the song was written ..The term "Uptempo Prog " was not even invented or even heard of ...All that sub genre labelization Bullshit didnt come around till WAY later !!..so dont even go there and dont be a "UPtempo "dummy
@@stevekanakanui7033 lol...First off Rush formed in the 70'S I know; I was there...And HOW DARE YOU QUESTION my astute labeling! There are parts of the story not within the lyrics but told in the liner notes. The pain and angst in Geddys voice right before the character kills himself which is then picked up by Alex's guitar... chilling. I used to be sad that he killed himself *the character in the story* but it was a necessary sacrifice that was what allowed the Elder race of man to come back and free the people from the tyranny of the priests.
@@jamelakajamal you really should check out Hemispheres side 1 as well. It's one of their most perfectly executed studio works. It's not as "metal" as 2112 but just as awesome. And it's only 18 minutes.
Being the first band I was ever in to, I was kind of used to it. My jaw still hit the floor when I heard that the song "Hemispheres" was recorded in one take. ONE...
@@bandfromtheband9445 No, i always thought so but too but it was Hugh Syme , who also played piano/keys on 3 other Rush albums and was also one their graphic artists! Designed the 2112 ''starman'' logo to boot!
It's a little more complicated than that. But, yeh, they'd made Fly by Night, which was pretty much completely ignored and they were going down the tubes and playing small clubs half empty and such. Of course the record company was concerned (having invested a lot of money) and Rush knew the next album was make or break. They could have done something as accessible and poppy as possible, but they just said, screw it, and went for it. Of course had it not gone well, no one would be talking about how great a decision it was and we'd not even likely know about them. History is misleading because you only ever hear about the ones who swing hard and have the luck to hit it out of the park. In their case they did, and it became a cult hit, and then spread out from there. It could have fallen on deaf ears, as have many really good albums that just never found an audience (at least at the time, sometimes they later do.) And, as they say themselves, it's not like the whole album was one huge prog epic. The other side is much more 'songy' and accessible, and that helped as well.
@@deanroddey2881 I actually have a suspicion that 2112 is about their band tanking. The guitar representing their music and the priests representing the world. They just werent ready for rush. The dream represents their dream of being famous. Oracle:the dream and Soliloquy just works too perfectly with this theory. Im probably just overthinking it, but its a pretty interesting way of thinking i guess
I seen the tour of 2112 it was totally awesome what a concert I'll never forget them .please come back rush I seen you at the panther arena. Unbelievable band .That was my sixth time I seen them in concert.wow what a band.
"Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation." 7 words said 3 times... 7 x 3 = 21 "We have assumed control." 4 words said 3 times... 4 x 3 = 12 Coincidence? Knowing Neil Peart, I doubt it...
Hey Jamal critic Rush's "Closer to the Heart live" and then Tom Sawyer, Red Berchetta, and Big Money. Realizing that this is a three man band. And Neil Pert is one of the best percussionist of all time. Watch a concert clip of his drum solo. It will blow your mind !!!!! And he doesn't get tired thru the whole concert. But listen to those songs. When I was younger I wasn't a big fan of Rush. I was more into Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath. But Rush made me a fan. Triumph is another GREAT Canadian three man band. Check them out too.
You have to remember, back when this album came out it was on vinyl. We had album art and many albums contained lyrics sheets. So we would sit in our room and read the lyrics and admire the album art as they sang to us. The lyrics and album art are just as much a part of the listening experience. My favorite thing about Rush besides their immense talent is their refusal to conform and compromise their art for the sake of making a hit.
@@ThoughtCriminal918 then save up some bucks and get a turntable, amp, speakers and vinyl... its back man like 2019 saw more vinyl sold than cds.... i have 4 copies of moving pictures. Different masterings....i have a few 2112's as well.... you can get old albums or new pressings.... the record pressing plants cant keep up with demand.... do it man!!!!!
Jamal you’re like a child on Christmas Day, your reaction is pure and that’s why the music is written and recorded, for our minds to get stimulated and release our positive endorphins , create joy in our lives, especially in today’s world with so much bullshit all around. Keep it up brother.
Agree with this so much it’s so awesome seeing anybody appreciate music the way I do and I know so many others also do, so glad that rush was the first band I ever saw live they played so many classics (la villa blew my mind like I’ll never forget) I only dreamed of seeing one day live and thankful for my parents for introducing me into this genre of music, also my dad straight up named me after Alex lifeson lol so I always feel a special bond with my rush obsession and anyone who can get the pure joy that there music brings
"That voice man!". Understand, as a 50 year old Canadian, I NEVER thought I'd hear a South Central L.A. black man say that in 2019. The world is funny man! Love!
I've been watching Rush reactions lately, you would be surprised to see how many black people are doing it, they're all unanimous about the drumming. I never thought of Rush as being funky, but the way some of them move to the music i'm realizing, what the hell we can groove and dance to a Rush song! It's one of those good things about RU-vid, people who never heard of them are discovering gems from the past but as always with Rush it's a fans' band. No radios, no tv, no good words from critics written or spoken, no mega promotions, just a fan base that was built one by one. In the end the music, their legacy speaks for itself. Check a channel named ScribeCash, the girl is grooving hard on Rush :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k6MYFNc98b0.html
2112 was my introduction to RUSH back in 1976..had never heard of them walked into a stereo shop..Pacific stereo in Fresno california and they were using 2112 to demo their premium system....everyone in the store just froze and went WOW!!! WTF is that?? Truly mind boggling..I went over to The Warehouse Records and bought the album.. .listening to it through headphones was even better. RUSH never failed to amaze and delight .all that incredible music and musicianship from a three piece band. . A THREE piece Band! The BEST...just the BEST..period . RIP Neil Pert... A true giant of a talent.
14 years old, with headphones on. 45 years later same effect. I was a geeky kid and this just made the connection. Been working on every type of equipment ever since. I can listen to Rush anytime in my day or night.doesn’t matter whats going on in my life. Thanks Jamal for sharing the moment. 👍😁
2112 is a Rock Opera with 7 movements. On the album, Neil Peart, the Drummer and lyricist of legend, provides us with a story that goes along with each movement. I will provide it here. I. Overture And the meek shall inherit the Earth II. The Temples of Syrinx ...."The massive grey walls of the Temples rise from the Heart of every Federation city. I have always been awed by them, to think that every single facet of every life is regulated and directed from within! Our books, our music, our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent wisdom of the priests...." III. Discovery ...."Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was beautiful".... ...."I learned to lay my fingers across the wires, and to turn the keys to make them sound differently. As I struck the wires with my other hand, it produced my first harmonious sounds, and soon my own music! How different it could be from the music of the Temples! I can't wait to tell the priests about it!...." IV. Presentation ...."In the sudden silence as I finished playing, I looked up to a circle of grim, expressionless faces. Father Brown rose to his feet, and his somnolent voice echoed throughout the silent Temple Hall...." ...."Instead of the grateful joy that I had expected, they were words of quiet rejection! Instead of praise; sullen dismissal. I watched in shock and horror as Father Brown ground my precious instrument to splinters beneath his feet...." V. Oracle: The Dream ...."I guess it was a dream, but even now it all seems so vivid to me. Clearly yet I see the beckoning hand of the oracle as he stood at the summit of the staircase".... ...."I see the incredible beauty of the sculptured cites, and the pure spirit of man revealed in the lives and works of this world. I was overwhelmed by both wonder and understanding as I saw a completely different way to life, a way that had been crushed by the Federation long ago. I saw now how meaningless life had become with the loss of all these things...." VI. Soliloquy ...."I have not left this cave for days now. it has become my last refuge in my total despair. I have only the music of the waterfall to comfort me now. I can no longer live under the control of the Federation, but there is no place to go. My last hope is that with my death I may pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last." VII. Grand Finale
You forgot how The Grand Finale is the Elder Race coming back, to free the people from the Priests. When I hear it, I always envision a fleet of super-advanced spaceships, showing up to give the stagnant Federation a sound ass-whooping, and the voice at the end is the Oracle, who was trying to communicate with Starman in his dream, and give him hope that they were coming back, but instead, drove him to despair. I imagine that, after the final victory, he found Starman's body, and had it buried in a great mausoleum, made from a converted Temple, as a monument to the formerly oppressed, who are now free.
Not an opera. This is technically a symphony. The overture contains snippets of all the various movements of the complete symphony. An opera doesn't follow this formula.
When I was young, I would sit on my bedroom carpet, pop in the 8-track (yes, that old), headphones on and would read all the lyrics - over and over again until I knew every word and beat. Still know every song... on every album... by heart; in order! (Until "Signals.") Seen them 33 times LIVE, last time at Madison Square Garden and Barclay's before that. My favorite band EVER! Rest In Peace Neil Peart 1952-2020 #ThankYou
I'm a bit younger but I got the privilege of seeing them 3 times before Neil's passing. R40 was an amazing tour but Time machine was my favorite. Really wish I was able to see as many as you! Sad day when they revealed Neil's news but he helped make music that is gonna live on! Greatest drummer of all time. That's just the truth.
As a teenager in Brazil, an older friend was a Dj and, just for the pleasure, I helped him with his equipment; one day I saw an LP titled RUSH, I put in on the turntable... my jaw dropped before the tenth second; it was love at first sight!
There was a time in my young life I could tell you every track, what side they were on, and in what order on every Led Zeppelin album. Not so much anymore.
Wow Kelly!! 33 times. I thought I loved them more than anyone. You'e awesome! What year was the last time? (I'm listening to Neil's books right now.) On the second one. SAD!!! They're free on Amazon
To this day I still can't believe all the sound only these 3 guys can make! Truly is amazing! Three of the finest musicians all in one band. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time.
Until I discovered these reaction videos, Rush was just another band to me, who had a few songs I'd heard on the radio. I had no idea they were such a phenomenon.
I was 12 years old when my 19 year old brother told me he had something I needed to listen to. Laying on a waterbed, listening to this through a set of his very best pioneer headphones I was utterly and forever changed. I had no idea that music could do this.
I was 12 as well, and my older brother had me listen to A Farewell to Kings, which was brand new back then. I discovered their older stuff like this gem later that summer.
My brother introduced me to Rush too, he passed away last year, now I hear Rush and long for those days off my youth. Miss you Rich, rock on with Niel!
I had the pleasure of seeing them perform this live, beginning to end. (I believe it was the "Test for Echo" tour) WOW! It blows the mind seeing just 3 people create this sound. We know you're hooked when you become an air drummer. :D
RIP PROFESSOR I’d love to see Tool release their version of this to welcome the world back to live music once we are past COVID as both a tribute the Neil and the return of music
Best band ever. The Priests represent the record company that was trying to control them. This album was their response. They said if this was their last album, it would be purely Rush. They assumed control of their own fate. In my opinion, water represents nature, which is organic and pure. As opposed to the manufactured corporate music, Rush flowed like a cool stream for all to partake of. 2112 should inspire us all to not compromise on our convictions. God bless the trio that stood up to the machine.
They definitely have my respect for that. I knew nothing about this band, if it wasn't for Ninja Sex Party, But through their parody, "6969," I found out about this song, and I love every bit of it!
Nope, it is an allegory to world government, based on Ayn Rand’s “Anthem”. Check it out; it’s a pretty small book with a huge, “1984”-esque message. Peart was a big Rand disciple when he wrote this.
I’ve been listening to Rush (thank u Dad) since I was 7ish, this is literally the first time I’ve heard this song, I didn’t even know it existed & I can’t believe it. It’s so awesome to be having a first reaction with you Jamel! I love it thank you for doing this ✊🏻
Hey, I know it's like 2023..but , glad you appreciate Rush music !! 3 of the most talented musicians I've ever witnessed live...I'm sure you've listened to the rest of their catalogue by now ..Peace...
the first CD I ever bought with my own money when I was in second grade. I thank my mother and father for introducing me to stellar music early on in my life. dad and I saw Rush at Blossom Music Center when I was 9. best show I've ever been to. their live performances are exactly as they sound on an album. the musicianship is unparalleled.
Amen. The Ayn Rand was strong in Neil. And it’s structured like an opera or symphony: in the overture, you hear all the melodies (themes) that will play over the course of 20+ minutes.
In a time (the year 2112) when music is outlawed. And the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx are the controllers of the interplanetary society who have banned music. Wild story lol
The whole first side is a love Letter to Ayn Rand. Seriously. It even says so in the Vinyl gatefold. Its pretty much a sloppy SF take on the book Anthem. Except the hero does not die in the book.
This is when we would sit and listen to whole albums together. Maybe one best friend, maybe your best crew. Study the lyrics, pass the liner notes around... god that was so fun
I remember sitting in my bedroom in the late 70's and early 80's, putting the needle down on side "A" of 2112 and turning the volume up and annoying the hell out of my parents with this entire album. Good times! This really brought back the memories!
Same here. It’s been my favorite album for the last 43 years. I’ll NEVER forget the 1st time I heard it. A few 9 and 10 year old kids gathered around a neighboring teenagers Chevy Chevelle while this cool high school kid cranked 2112 out of his 8 Track player. When I listen to this I am immediately transported.
You released this on 9 November 2019. Who would've believed that only 2 months later {almost to the day} we would be mourning one of the best drummers to ever pick up a pair of sticks? R.I.P. Neil💔
If my kid was to come up to me and ask "Dad, could you show me how rock music works?" , I would smile and say "Have you heard of the band Rush?" This band is the Symphony of Rock...a symphony with three members.
Put a smile on my face. I love watching people discover Rush and all the gems they have to offer, and none more iconic than the epic that is 2112. Welcome to the Rush family brother.
YYZ and 2112 are music so good that it's hard to fathom their creation at all. I mean Rush in general is mindblowing but YYZ is the most popular Rush song and 2112 has the best creation story.
It cracks me up, too. I love to see this guy get off on stuff we grew up with and loved! Just remember. The guys were wearing kimonos on the back cover!
I could just listen to Neil hit the kit all day long. Damn I’m going to miss him so much. Just at levels that won’t be matched. And Alex is easily one of the most underrated guitarists of his time. So sick
Obviously one of the greatest rock album side concepts, but consider the short time it took to create. Some bands take years in between albums to get such perfection.
Listening to this so many times over the years was great but trying to play it with my band buddies in a sweaty garage studio was even better. Long live Rush!
On the Red Sector A tour... In Miami they played 2112 side one! In its entirety!! And also the did all of the epic long songs!! Cygnus X1, Xanadu, lakeside park, and whole moving pictures album... Concert was almost 4 hours with 2 breaks! They played bugs bunny cartoons for opening act!! I've seen rush almost every album since Caress of steel.... But that show? Was absolutely the best show I've seen!!!!!! Brilliant
I hear you shout, "THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT DAY!" and I'm teleported back to when I first heard this. My man recently I've run across so many different people having these joyful reactions to Rush, people of different ethnicities, ages, countries, and I realize you are all my people, but I also realize, "Hey, those times when I thought I just might be surrounded by morons, I was!" I love what you do man. Rock on!
Rush connects on so man levels.... your reaction at each transtition also shows... I am so glad you enjoyed and mostly your obvious natural reaction to Niel... 2112 is simply put.. an Epic
Cam B , Me too, army brat in Germany. Never heard of anyone else hot knifing hash. I remember when this album first came out. My teen years, late 70’s to mid 80’s in Germany. Too cool! Rock on brother!
I love how the light in your eyes portrays the goodness our music is giving you ENJOY THE RIDE!!!!! This album came out when I was 12 and I am so lucky to have been there listening to all 50s 60s 70s and the 80s and 90s
From a music standpoint, I never thought I'd get such enjoyment watching someone enjoy Rush. There catalog is just one fantastic song after another, album after album.
"We have assumed control, we have assumed control, WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL." Yes they did, of their creative freedom. The big FU to the corporate radio execs.
Rush, 'Tears' - one thing I've noticed is that some of the best Ballads come from the Heavy Metal bands. I honestly don't know how 'Tears' is so un-heard of. It's beautiful with deep lyrics. Please give it a listen.
Ahhh, the epic that changed the game for Rush. After this LP, they were able to make the music they wanted to make without the bigwigs in the record company trying to tell them what to do. Fantastic song!
Epic! The record company wanted them to do what “they” wanted, and the boys decided to make the record the band wanted, and then go back home to their jobs, than bend. That decision changed music forever!
@@redemptiveblood Yes, I was sad to see them get out of the phase they were in during the early to mid 70s. The first 6 LPs and AtWaS Live LP are so great, Caress not fantastic but good, and those are my preferred Rush music, but the stuff in the 80s and 90s is good, just not as much of an impact as the 70s music. But I am a sucker for lengthy songs and musical interplay that Rush, and groups like Cream, Allmans, Deep Purple, Derek and the Dominos, Grand Funk etc. had when it came to improvisation and straight up jamming on those epic songs that they are so well known for!
I was 12 when a friend of mine put this record on. His older brother owned it. He handed me the liner notes. I had never been transported out of my body before. When people use that phrase, that is the moment I think about.
The last words.... "Attention all planets of the solar federation". They say those 7 words 3 times. Next is "We have assumed control". They say those 4 words 3 times. First phrase = 21. Second phrase = 12. ................... 2112
I've been watching you for a while now. It's the song choices that draw me in, but it's your reactions that make the videos such an absolute joy to watch. I get a big grin watching you getting a grin as you listen to these songs. Keep on keepin' on!
My dad bought this when I was born. It has always been one of my favorites. Had it on 8 track until I was 16. Then had to get it on cassette so I could play it in my own car!
"And the meek shall inherit the earth" Jamel's face lights up with both surprise and joy as I am sure every one of our faces did when we first experienced this song. Rush is a journey that is forever timeless and I can only imagine how crazy this was back when the album first hit the streets. I discovered them in the late 80's/early 90's. Here we are 30 plus years later and they are still bringing new joy in 2020. It just makes me wonder if they foretasted their absolute relevance to 2112. I think that there is defiantly some sort of "other worldly" connection in their ability to continually draw people in.
I saw them in a smaller arena where the floor was wide open and we could sit wherever we wanted. The police didn’t dare enter that crowd. People openly were smoking weed and even hot knifing hash. It was insane. This was in Edmonton, Canada. I was 14 and was never the same. What a trip.
MrVicDog I was at a medium sized indoor venue when I saw this concert live. My friend and I were standing about 8 people back from center stage I had turned my head to say something about Niel Peart's drum rig to my friend right before the explosion that happens before the lyrics "and the meek will inherit the earth" so it was bad timing on my part. They set off a bunch of pyrotechnics when my right ear was fully turned towards the stage. It was painful! That ear never quite recovered from that concert.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I heard this album when it first came out. I was 13 years old and it changed me forever. I picked up a bass guitar, learned this entire album, and I'm still playing today. That was back when you bought the record and read the lyrics while the album played. If you haven't done that with this record, I recommend it highly!
Thank you for paying tribute to Neil Peart with his drum solo. We have lost one of the greats. Been listening to Rush for the last 40 years and it great yo see their music live on. Rush is timeless.
