For those who don't know, Don Cheadle takes his craft very seriously, if he agrees to a role, he puts in the same effort whether it is large or small. He said he would do the scene but there were 2 stipulations, he learned chinese and spoke with the proper dialect, and when he fought Jackie he didn't lose or win. He did this for a small cameo fee and .25 percent of the gross profits
For a cameo before he was even big? I find that hard to believe. His only two big time credits up to this point are colors in 88 and boogie nights in 97. He didn’t become big until a few years after this.
@@TonyDanza4Lyfe This is a Brett Ratner film, and they had worked together previously in “The Family Man”. Hence why Jeremy Piven also has a small role, as does Saul Rubinek (he played the blackjack dealer in the casino scene). Actors will often do small roles on a director’s subsequent film for cheap as a thank you.
@@TonyDanza4Lyfe he was in Meteor Man as the villain. Co starred in Volcano and Out Of Sight around the same time as RH. And I'm sure at the time he was probably already working on Oceans 11 and Traffic. He was a name in Hollywood for sure around this time.
People don’t know .25 of 1% of $347M is literally $867,500… not exactly a ton here and the projection of $150-$175M is half of that… Chris Tucker got paid $20M per movie
"You come up in here, you don't show me no badge. You didn't even flash a warrant! You know what I'ma do for you? I'ma whoop yo ass... and then I'ma whoop *yo* ass!"
@アラシMa Yeah was going to say. Given martial art styles ( Whushu ) where passed from father to son and given brothers of " twisting tiger " trained both men they would know what the other went threw to learn said style so a mutual respect bond would be present.
Brilliant writing. Carter’s bullying tactics weren’t going to work here, but the respect martial arts students have for their masters were an instant connection between Lee and Kenny. It’s amazing how much people open up when respect and honor get involved
Especially as it wasn't just the fact that they were martial artists, but that they were martial "siblings" within the same style. Within the martial arts world that is a very old fashioned but powerful bond in the styles that still emphasize it.
@@bw-mi9xp The official chinese language is mandarin, but China is filled with many dialects. One popular dialect spoken mainly in the province of Guangdong, which includes places like Hong Kong, is cantonese. Cantonese is what jackie chan and don cheadle were speaking here.
@FelipeKyo he was going to shoot him and tell law enforcement that he fell on the floor as if it were a freak accident that took the mans life and not him being shot by carter.
@@FalconWindblader lol. Maybe he does know. Who knows. Cuz that accent if I only heard audio would have mistaken for a dam native and I am american born and dont speak cantonese.
Yup, Kung-fu movies were a big thing for young black Americans after the civil rights movement since they never really saw one of their own in movies and on TV, so Asian actors like Bruce Lee were kind of like a better alternative than seeing white people all the time. I believe this was sort of like a collective inspiration for Don Cheadle's character in this movie, which in turn was Kendrick's inspiration. Crazy right?
"So detective Carter and Lee came up in my restaurant looking for counterfeit bills and I pulled out a hunnit out of the safe and said 'BOOM, are you looking for this?!?'"
you are embarrassing me in front of my wife and front of my kids. Chris:You're embarrassing yourself,You a black man with a Chinese restaurant on Crenshaw.Thats funny!
@@FernandoMartinez-jl3us Fun Fact: The Greatness of Chris Career is improv most his movies weren't on script and eventually the directors just let him rock out!! Gave him a baseline of the scene and just let'em GO💯🐐
This scene's blooper was golden. Tucker called Jackie's character as jackie and cheadle just lost his shit having to reshoot again "HIS NAME IS LEE GODDAMMIT" 😂😂
@@seriesreview3838 Hav... Have you not heard of the movie: "Hotel Rwanda"? If not, it's a good movie based on the Rwandan genocide. And Don Cheadle plays the main character, the manager of a hotel in Rwanda.
It's because the moment they entered the back, his hand was already on it but noticed his finger was off the trigger. Chris Tucker apparently was taught well enough.
@@stantondinger5836 if what you said is true, then it is kinda wasted because he was indeed impressive! Nevertheless, he had Jackie Chan to thank for making him who he is, courtesy of the Rush Hour trilogy.
Carter's competence is vastly underrated. He's actually a damn good cop. He always get the job done and he's extremely dangerous with a gun. The guy never misses a shot and I don't think he's ever lost a shootout
Yeah and apparently the callback went over Don Cheadles head he completely missed the reference. He couldn’t tell why Kendrick was dressed like that in the music video.
Probably had a voice coach and worked real hard to get the few lines right. From what I have read, even harder than Mandarin; more tonal. But thanks for answering was wondering about the quality of his accent.
@@tlfilms207 actually about 7 seconds earlier you can see Carter prepping to draw when Kenny indicates that he's not going to cooperate and issues threats. Carter had a good read on the situation.
@@brians4258 He's suppose to do that, it's part of his scene script lol. You cant show a scene where he's not drawing and then cut to a scene of him raising up the gun..cmon now...
@@money_fight_339 u prob dont understand cut scenes. They only used 1 camera and had to do multiple takes! So of course it looks likehe pulled it out that fast
@@josgn Lol not really. I never realized how funny this scene (and that part in particular) was until a few years ago when I started realizing how much cops actually shoot people and get away with it. And they can straight up say whatever they want, no matter how much evidence goes against their statement, and still get away with it. This movie and the 1st one are timeless.
@@artofmartialcinemaamc5334 Have you watched Dave Chappell's Killing em softly stand up. Just sprinkle some crack on black man after you shoot em and walk away. Funny how that actually happened in DC years later. Dave was ahead of his time.
I love this scene cause the first defense Kenny throws at Jack makes Jack curious how he learned that but gets cut off by another technique and they instantly realize how they have similarities. Let’s thank the writers of the first two films instant CLASSIC AND TIMLESS ❤
Same here the impact and technique alone makes Jackie curious that Kenny didn't learn that on some third rate and u notice Jackie is already at stance because if Kenny third rate he will backstep, but a martial artist will follow through after the first shot was initiated.
From an interview he did with mic. "It's funny because I'd worked with Brett Ratner a couple of times before that movie, and he said, "Hey, do you want to do a cameo in this movie?" And I told him, "I'll be in the movie if I can speak Chinese and fight Jackie Chan." And he said, "You want to get your ass kicked by Jackie Chan?" And I said, "No, no, no. I said, 'Fight Jackie Chan.' I'll fight him to a stalemate. If I can do those two things, I'll be in the movie."
As they noted, their Sifus in Twisting Tiger style were brothers. And having teachers from the same family and style in old martial traditions would make them siblings of a sort.
Who's here just randomly watching iconic movie scenes one after one and feeling the greatness of these incredible movies, reminiscing the times of life these movies gave you? ❤️
Still, till this day, this movie was one of my best cinema experiences ever. The cinema had people sitting on the stairs between the seats. The movie was funny af. Unforgettable
Lmaoo when he told jackie imma whoop yo ass jackie looked unimpressed but when he spun jackie shit jackie grabbed his wrist like oh shit he aint ordinary 😂😂
What I love about this is Master Ching appears to be some well renowned master in Beijing probably with a huge school and the other is his brother Freddy down in Crenshaw lol
