Thank you J.T. Curtis, yes J.T. I just found out about Neil, and I am still crying about it bro. Have a great New Year J.T. from Indiana. And May God Bless Mr. Peart. he was a ONE OF A KIND!
My dad was a massive rush fan, saw them like 6-10 times and unfortunately was never able to take me to a rush concert. My parents got front row seats during R40 tour and said they were as amazing as ever. Truly a sad moment for rock and roll and especially for drumming with him gone
When you realize Neil wrote most of their songs, including this one, and you actually read the lyrics, kind of brings a tear to your eye, because they lyrics are so well laid out, it paints a picture in your head, and pretty much every song is based on pure freedom and life in its purest form. Rush is and always will be timeless and rust proof. I wish they had a museum made for them entirely.
Neil got this song from a story he read in road and track and gives credit to the author in the liner notes to moving pictures. Years later he arranged to meet the guy and they rode their motor cycles through the Appalachians to Rush's next concert where he was given the vip treatment. 😊
I first heard Rush as a kid when "Permanent Waves" came out, but I got hooked after "Moving Pictures". Last time I got to see them live was on the Time Machine tour in 2010 and even though they were pushing 60 years old they were fantastic. RIP Neil you are dearly missed.
I think this is when they were at their peak. Absolute perfection. I'm 62 and have seen them 5-6 times. I started listening to their music in the mid 70's.
It’s how I learned to play the drum set. Rush tshirts, rush posters, drawing rush on my notebooks, framing my rush first album self-art. Still have that drawing. So dear to my heart. Playing drums to Rush with big headphones on. Just home.
MIDI didn't exist at this time...to paraphrase Geddy "we were doing MIDI before MIDI." The Taurus pedals are also triggering other synths...probably the OBXa or Jupiter 8. Listen closely you hear both a lower bass (Taurus) sound and a higher string (OBXa or Jupiter 8).
Don Smith ....but remember, they also used it to trigger different sounds from the Oberheims as well. Probably by creating some interface to the CV out of the Taurus pedals...
I always really loved this song a lot. I’m glad it’s not just me. This is a gateway drug offered by the players to become associated with freedom by providing an exciting escapist thrill-ride so we could learn to enjoy our minds. Listen, millions of people have come to the teachings of Peart through his always excellent efforts. He taught us that we are above our captivity. He taught us how to see it. He rushed in and saved us. I have an argument that Peart and Co. are QAnon. The graphic novel of 2112 just about proves it timing wise. But, either way, whoever is the Q Group, certainly have listened to and found their hearts for freedom partly by listening to, reading, and understanding the messages given to us by Rush. So, I salute the dynamic trio for soldering for nearly fifty years bringing millions upon millions of us to our senses and priming the pump which is now draining swamps worldwide in unison. We are all Q now. I think Rush definitely deserves a humanitarian award for their lifetime of service and making it sound good. Always outside of the system. Working. I wonder how many people get this point? Neil said that it was great to finally be “indicted” into the Rock Hall of Fame. Lots probably thought him ignorant till he then said, “Perhaps we will one day indict all of you?” It was a play on induct. Well, here we are. Could Peart through intention and practice actually become a functioning king through off-beat ensyncopation self-appointment? I think that is what we saw. He doesn’t like people to fawn over him. He hates it. It made him reclusive to spare the embarrassment. However, others took the message to heart and also became individually excellent at something and then organized to save the world. This is my opinion based of hundreds of facts and observations which go back decades and come to the present and form a united, goal oriented, path towards the love of truth. Thank you gentlemen Gary, Alex, and Neil. Congratulations! You have changed the world. Carter from Louisiana
COME ON PEOPLE..... HOW GREAT IS THIS BAND AT THEIR APEX.??? This is a LIVE recording. No tricks no BS. Even if your a musician who never liked this band you cannot deny how good this is. From the writing, the originality and the playing by 3 of the best to play those instruments. Thanks for the memories Neil. RIP and ride safe.
They sound just like the albums. I saw Signals live in 83-84. Exact duplicate of the album!! No other catalog of music like them. I play drumcovers & Neil is tricky. Very Buddy Rich/ Keith Moon inspired right their! Neil was a great!
@@drumcrazycrary I saw them about 10 years after you did and it was pure magic! My favorite concerts were Rush because you knew exactly that you'd get pure perfection. I saw them two more times and was always amazed at the sound they put together. Never will I see that again. :(
@@deannikitas6393 Rush sums up magic. RIP Neil Peart an awesome drummer that can't be imitated respectfully imo. Never will be another drummer like him that can also write the lyrics to the songs.
I have christened every car I've ever owned by listening to this song on repeat for the first week. It's the perfect driving song. RIP Professor. Thanks for everything. 👍
Nice. Wish i did that with my car. After the media flu lyes and as dictates by their leftist's evil masters, it is clear they want this song to be reality. Will i be able to play this song in a new car in years to come?
This whole concert they are just at the peak of their powers. They used to play it on MTV and I was enamored of it then and now . Incredible craftsmanship. One of the greatest bands all time. Period.
@@davidpaz9389 pretty much the same here . . .. I tore up my hands learning to play bass to Rush (and Duran Duran--that stuff is a different kind of fire)
Roger Taylor - Queen, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Paul - Pantera, Ian Paice - Deep Purple, Daniel Seraphine - Chicago, Ringo, Brian Bennett - The Shadows, Mel Taylor - The Ventures, Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.
Wow we have the same taste !! Ian Paice could keep a beat like no other ! Roger Taylor was simple but perfect.... Always loved The Ventures... i heard that a lot of that band was in trouble with the law at one time or another... dont know if it was true or not ..
"Wind in my hair, shifting and drifting, mechanical music, adrenaline surge." Anyone that's cracked the throttle on a motorcycle or car on a countryside drive with the windows down knows what Neil is laying down. Neil was a gearhead himself. We probably all unwittingly encountered him on his beloved motorcycle treks around the world.
"Red Barchetta" is, in my opinion, about as close to songwriting perfection--the synergistic marriage of great lyrics to great music--as there is. Arguably, it's the most "cinematic" song in the history of recorded music--certainly in the history of recorded rock music. Incidentally, at the one-lane bridge, 76 people were left stranded at the riverside.
Suddenly ahead of me Across the mountain side A gleaming alloy-air car shoots towards me two lanes wide I spin around with shrieking tires to run the deadly race Go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase I fucking love Rush
Rush was by far the best band I have ever heard Live!!! The powerful sounds coming from just 3 men is unbelievable to hear live! Their sound techs and crew are the best in the business period!
I love all kinds of Power Trios. Rush, Steve Morse Band, Satriani (When he was just a trio), SRV, Hendrix and many others. For some reason as a guitar player, just guitar, bass and drums doing as much as possible is my favorite thing.
I think this version is even better than on Moving Pictures. The guys obviously loved playing this song, and what an incridible sound production they made back then.
Too bad you never saw that "young" side of your parents....they were so cool back then....what a bummer, they of all people trying to give you " good advice" in your life...after what they did..back then. ;) lol
This old Aussie has been listening to this band since1974, without doubt three of the most talented musicians to have ever graced the planet, giving us diverse intellectual music with thought provoking lyrics, masterful playing and composers of the highest degree, can anyone tell me of another band that you can listen to the same song three times, but listening to just Neil's drums, then Geds bass, then Alex on guitar,I can't think of another band that can make you do that, we get triple value out of each song, just unberfuckingleavable.
i pray that neil is in Heaven. He definetly knew somethings about the Bible and God. a few examples are distant early warning when at the end of the song he writes "Absolom' who is king Davids son who wants the throne his father has, before he is ready for it. Hence the title"distant early warning" and at the end of "big money" he writes "big money got no soul". And Jesus said" verily verily I say unto you,how hardly is he who has riches to enter into The Kingdom of God". so i pray that Neil and us all have believed in The Lord Jesus Christ as our personal savior so we might all be forgiven of our sins and those who are no longer with us, taken into The Kingdom of Heaven. Amen
Lyrically here Peart has managed to merge his libertarian individualist anti-authoritarian philosophy, his passion for cars, and his personal belief in that "go for the gusto" attitude towards life despite it's hardships into one simple glorious tale...all complimented by amazing music from Lee and Lifeson. Rush really has no pears.
Amen to that. Above all and foremost comes The Word of God,[The Bible] then the writings of mr peart are very intellectual and often spiritual. Rush is 2nd to none in the musical industry. Lyrically and musically they stand alone.
Neil can't just keep a simple beat can he? Damn every song is an adventure. You, sometimes, have to listen to a song several times just to follow an individual player. Classic.
This song is got to be the best driving song ever written! Everytime i take a drive, i crank this one up in my car radio! Just awesome! Rip🙏Neil Pert👋😢you're definetly will be missed!
A masterpiece. Rush was absolutely the most precision rock band ever. I saw them in Dallas in the early 1980's. Their concerts were spot-on with their albums. I'm 62 now and remain a loyal fan. Certainly one of Canada's best rock bands.
Saw “Moving Pictures” Tour in September 1981 at the Hemisfair Arena in San Antonio, Texas. The greatest concert of my young life. Was a freshman in high school (Texas Military Institute) at the time. What a great pleasure and honor to see the guys play. One of the many blessings in my life.
People sometimes wonder why this era produced the best music and best musicians ever. I’m only 34 but I know why… this was it, our freedom as a society & electronics were at the right spot, while there are pieces of it that have reached new heights society has become obsessed with other things, spending all the time you have growing up playing an instrument for fun isn’t a thing kids really do anymore. Instead of 3 great friends with amazing talents coming together and forming Rush they’re playing Rocket league, maybe they’re really good and make money from it, but it has no impact on society and won’t move future generations. Rush will!
I stumbled onto the Exit Stage Left cassette tape in the basement of a house at an 8th great party. From there, I listened to it every day on my Walkman while delivering newspapers every afternoon. As an aspiring drummer, I felt like I had found something very special and incredibly important. My life changed as a result of this live album.
For Those Teenagers looking for their Ultimate Car Song... For we old Guys looking for our Youth with the Ultimate car song,...There is No Better Than This!
@@zachsmith3 agree. Not that it matters much, but Alex around this period looks his best / healthiest. This era was Rush in their absolute prime imo. The goldilocks zone between the early minimalistic effects & screaming years, and the later new wave era where Alex's guitars were buried under a mountain of synthesizers.
This song was released in 1981. How could Neil Peart have known in 2021 we would be frighteningly not far off from actually having a motor law? I say this is my favorite Rush song, but then again, I say that about every Rush song. 😁
Excellent voice.Bass player extraordinary vocals.Clean clear precise guitar. And arguably the best rock n roll drummer of all time.Truly a class act.RIP Neal Peart you were a true drumming phenomenon
@@SoundlabStudios63 Cancel culture always existed ... it just took different shapes over the centuries. An example from 1076/77 is the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of Germanic Nations being excommunicated by the pope. Nobody would deal with him anymore, so he (and his wife and child) had to go to Canossa dressed as a sinner to apologize. An example from 1917 would be the rather brutal November Revolution ... where people who disagreed with the commies were canceled permanently.
Nothing new I guess. Townshend’s “Lifehouse” album (which became Who’s Next) was about a similar topic (dystopian future where music is banned by the government)
2:06 - 2:33 I'm no live musician (barely a musician at all), but I imagine the peak of any musician's career is getting the crowd to sing along with you. It's gotta be one of the best feelings ever!
Hey me too ! Same show. Kansas City . Urged to brag, I might mention my humble self on the 10 yard at Pontiac Silverdome in MI . It happened to be Led Zeppelin ' s largest live audience ever and since 1977. I was also deaf for part of the next day. wouldn't have had it any other way , even today ! We were close enough to not piss off security. The ladies both mine and others , were trying to chew the cuffs off Plant's denims. I play guitar , so I was blowing the top of my head off to watch Page do his magic up close. By that , I mean you could actally feel the bass the bass drum and Page, from the soundwaves of the sound system. You could feel your skull kind of resonating with the lower regiters of the music. Wish I could share the experience with other Zep fans. Now for mah man , Alex Lifeson ! ! Give it up ladies and gents ! !
My dad has seen them 13+ times. As a young kid I thought that was ridiculous, as an adult who missed them touring by a few years I now understand from the videos, I can’t imagine it live
I'm shocked as I just found out about Neil and have been listing to tributes and tunes for the past 3 hours. Rush was my first rock concert, Hemispheres, January 23, 1979! He was truly a "Working Man"! Thanks for helping a young kid think!!
Used to play the Moving pictures vinyl album in 1982. As a drummer it was an absolutely brilliant album on vinyl. In the 22nd century the folk will be raving about Limelight and Tom Sawyer and Red Barchetta and all the albums Rush generously gifted the world. Thank you so much.
Classic song by a one of a kind trio. Man this takes me back to my childhood. I miss the days of MTV and these great videos. Rush will live forever in my mind and heart. Most of all, thank you Neil Peart for drumming like no other. Rest in Peace brother. I'm so fortunate to have seen you in Wichita a few years ago. We sometimes take for granted how long these guys have played together. I was crushed to hear he was ill. I'm glad that they took time to call it quits and spend quality time with family and friends. Rest easy and condolences to the Peart family, Geddy, Alex and friends.
Rush is certainly my favourite (notice the spelling... yeah i'm Canadian) band, and i LOVE this tune, but for an all out driving tune that makes me want to speed (in my younger years of course ... wink wink, nudge nudge), etc., Radar Love is the best.... IMO.
I am in tears and in awe..... I can hear very few differences between this live version and the LP version..... Three consummate musicians. God's speed Mr. Neil Peart!
This is the sound of my childhood as a Canadian. I didn’t appreciate them as much as I should have. For the three of them to do this for so many years and, remain away from the temptations of the industry, and always be professional, is something to admire. On top of all that, we get masterpieces like this. RUSH is one of a kind in almost every way. Thank you for the music and, rip professor.
The most cinematic 6 minutes of music ever written. There’s more story content in this one song than anything Hollywood is producing now a days. The imagery is so strong. I feel that even though we’ve never seen these characters and this setting with our own eyes, everyone who is listening pretty much has the exact same images running through their mind. That’s why Rush, to me, is the greatest band of all time. No other band would have the ambition, the courage, the forward thinking, or even the talent to try and attempt something like this.
This is from The Forum in Montreal 1981 on the Moving Pictures Tour, the same recording as most of the songs on the Exit... Stage Left album, except the three songs on side 2, that were recorded on the Permanent Waves Tour, at Apollo in Glasgow 1980. The live sound they produced back then is unbeatable. The best band in the world!
I don't know what you mean by "seem". The bass guitar *is* an awesome instrument. It's just that Geddy Lee is a fucking legend-no, a god-when it comes to bassists.
drvannozzun if you can play Rush songs, that means that you are a very talented musician. exit stage left was my first concert, I can boldly say as a Rush fan. I just love Rush my favorite band. Your comment is correct!. if they play Rush well your dam good but with that said. Rush is one of and if not the one of the best live band in concert ever. Thank the YES fans that is just messed up. 2017????
drvannozzun OR anything from Kate Bush for that matter! There's STILL not a decent tribute album on Rush yet😡😡😡 the Working Man one in the 90's has les Claypool doing one song and everyone else A NOBODY to this day to the best of my knowledge...
Guitarist here. I'm not saying I've learned their whole catalog but... probably 25+ that I can come off the top of my head with and mostly by ear, using tabs after to double check myself. I wouldn't say the playing is any harder than anything else you would learn, what gives this music it's challenge and appeal is 1) the nuances. So many different time signature changes and offbeat stuff. Like I've been studying music 10+ yrs and I still think the only way to count most of their rhythms is to kmow them by heart. And 2) the emotion. It's so hard to recreate their feel exactly because they truly play from the heart. My favorite musicians by far
I love the lyric about eluding the "eyes". I always thought it to be the eyes of Dr Eckleburg, bespectacled on the billboard as described in the Great Gatsby. Neal, the master.
THE DRUMMER WHO INFLUENCED EVERY ROCK DRUMMER IN THE LAST 40 TO 50 YEARS IN ALL GENRES/ METAL// CLASSIC// PROGRESSIVE// EVERY TYPE OF MUSIC WITH DRUMMING IN IT( MR.NEIL PEART) MAY YOU BE IN COMFORT AND HAPPINESS)
