I understand that RUSH is your favorite.... but that's because you've never heard HEADS HANDS and FEET, one of the bands that 'spoiled' me in my youth. This British band was overlooked by many in the US (so, not many requests), but once you give them a listen, trust me, you will want to keep this great music alive and share it with your fans! Their first double-album from 1971, is loaded with amazing cuts; superb guitar licks, beautiful harmonies, and haunting lyrics, with a bit of country flavor, even some cow-bell! In fact the album features the original 'Country Boy' written by them. Start with these cuts and then start a playlist if you're convinced. But please don't bother with live performances. They just can't compete with these masterfully produced studio cuts. >Song for Suzie: (Contains a legendary guitar solo by Albert Lee) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kf5A2nFhK80.html >>I Wish You Knew Me: (short & sweet) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u7Ox8oZPQ30.html >>>Look At The World It's Changing/You Because You Know Me: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DtkWTwMTMic.html >>>>Country Boy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8GzmswOQWz8.html I will keep recommending them until you get the message.
This is PEAK Rush. This song is 10 minutes of pure, distilled prog-rock anthem goodness. It doesn't get any more Rushy than the Camera Eye. Just epic. I don't think a single measure of drums repeat the entire song. Just incredible stuff from Neil there. It's not that this song is the hardest to physically or musically play, it doesn't repeat at all. Nothing. The precision is incredible. Super damn hard to recreate. It is INCREDIBLE live.
Not sure what makes me smile... the fact that I'm listening to a good song or the fact that I'm seeing someone experience a good song for the first time. Probably both. Music gathers the spirit and unites our spirituality.
I'm a drummer, been playing since the 4th grade and had a great private teacher for 7 years from 5th-12th grade. He hand wrote the drum charts for Moving Pictures by ear for our lessons. I played the Camera Eye for our school talent show in 9th grade. This reaction brought back a lot of memories of my mentor and times long past, thank you for all you do Jamel! Keeping great music alive indeed my friend!
I wasn't listening to decent music in my teens. I didn't really know what to like. Whatever was on the radio. Then a friend introduced me to RUSH and my life forever changed.
Neil's work on the drums are second to none. But his talent for creating lyrics is nothing but masterful. He is able to transcend you on a journey through the song. On every Rush album, it's his words that give life and meaning to the music, with Geddy and Alex filling in the blanks and adding the color. Neil may be the drummers drummer. But he is also the wordsmith's wordsmith. R.I.P. Neil. By the way, Jamel. I don't know if you've ever seen their induction to the Rock Hall of Fame, but if you haven't, you really need to. Alex's thank you speech is, Mystifying.
I agree with all that. As for the Hall of Fame speech, enjoyable though that is, this short two-minute clip, with Geddy's thoughts on the event, moves me to tears - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5MXI03-qRU0.html
The only thing that could approach Neil's drum playing was his scintillating, wise, astute, highly-intellectual lyricism. He was extremely well-read and sharp-witted which is reflected in his writing. God dang, what a band. So incredible on multiple levels. Here's a vote for "Analog Kid" next. No disappointments there. My teen son's fave Rush song. He has great taste.
This is my favorite Rush song. It's also one of my favorite songs ever. I first heard it on a Greyhound bus with my little all aluminum Sony Walkman that I got in Toronto. I was fourteen and riding the Greyhound bus from South Florida up to Detroit. It was oddly comforting.
Yes, there is music being made like this today, in America and around the world. It's just *not being played on American radio* anymore. That's all. I find out about newer bands making this kind of music, on a regular basis, on the "Sea of Tranquility" RU-vid channel. Good music didn't die in the '80s or '90s. You just have to be willing to take a little bit of extra time to search for it and find it.
That distorted tone applied to the bass is so gritty! Lots of room for Neil and Alex to expand on this, all the while Geddy throws in tasty melodic licks on bass.
They were in the habit of writing amazing bass and drum parts under Alex's solo breaks, this one being probably best, Free Will being another amazing example. It's almost like all three of them are putting on clinics simultaneously, but still without interfering with Alex's solo.
Isn't it strange how your favorite Rush song changes all the time? Or no matter what type of music you like, you will always like Rush. Or, some songs by Rush aren't appreciated the first time you hear them, then they are your favorite? Or no matter what you are going through, or whomever friends you have or had, a Rush concert put everyone together again. These guys made everything right. What a timeless band. What a bummer that time is in the past...
ALEX HAS ALWAYS BEEN UNDERRATED! The solo in camera eye by Alex is just incredible, POWER WINDOWS is your next rush disk. This was the "end"of a chapter. Lyrics on this are just RUSH!! Thank you my brother...keep it alive
It is a solo that fits perfectly into the mood of the song and every time I hear it sends a shiver down my spine... sublime musically technically spiritually emotionally...love to see Jamals reactions... Keep up the good work Jamal and enjoy discovering the magic...
I admire your dedication to the Canadian Triumvirate. You are a member of the Rushinati. We have assumed control. "The Camera Eye" is Lifeson at his most sublime.
THANK YOU! None of us are really that different, are we. You made me look at life in a whole new light! No one is free from trial! Everyone has to fight. Each of our struggles are different, but we struggle just the same! Thank you Jamel, Thank you RUSH! I feel less alone now! God Bless!
I took my son, who was in high school at the time, to see Rush at the SARATOGA PERFORMANCE ARTS CENTER (SPAC) Saratoga, NY. In 2010. They performed the entire Moving Pictures album. Still have the ticket stubs. Tremendous show! Keep the music alive, brother!
I am glad I went to see Rush on the Time Machine tour and saw this song live, even though they changed a little from the album, I saw them perform this and will never forget it.
I have so many RUSH related memories....these guys were practically the soundtrack for my early life.....I still get a little teary eyed over some of Neil's playing....The guitar solo in this song is a perfect example of the genius of Alex Lifeson....one of a kind....
I listened to this album constantly during Art Studio during my college days. It was so calming because it reminds me of my latter years of childhood in the Great Northwest!🤗 💖
React to "Countdown" the last song on the Signals album. It is about the first launch of the space shuttle. We met our liaison man, who conducted us safely into the "V.I.P." zone (Red Sector A) in the pre-dawn hours. We were due to play that night in Dallas, so we couldn't wait much longer. Finally they announced that the launch would be scrubbed for that day. Well, we ran for the car, and our daring driver sped off, around the traffic jams, down the median of the highway, and got us to the airport barely in time. The next night we had a show in San Antonio, after which we drove off immediately, clambered into a hired jet, and flew straight back to Florida. This time the launch took place on schedule, and it was SOMETHING!! I remember thinking to myself as we flew back to Fort Worth after a couple days without sleep: "We've got to write a song about this!" It was an incredible thing to witness, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can only hope that the song comes even close to capturing the excitement and awe that we felt that morning. - Neil Peart in the Signals tour book
In the Rush documentary, Jack Black said it best when he said Rush had a great bottle of sauce and no matter how long you held it upside down the sauce just kept coming out. As a diehard Rush fan for 40 + years I have always loved the deeper cuts the best.
So happy to see you reacting to Rush, again. I adore this track. STILL awaiting reactions to CYGNUS-X1 books 1 and 2, so you're going to have to react to the albums "Hemispheres" and "Farewell to Kings"!! Thanks Jamel. Hugs from Italy 💗🙏🇮🇹😊
If I remember my Rush trivia, the street sounds in the intro are sampled from the original "Superman" movie, which was still quite popular back then. This song is musical brilliance personified. It actually inspired me to take a trip to Manhattan. It was one of the peak experiences of my life.
Indeed it is. It's in the Rush wiki. The NYC crowd noise and honking horns in the first 10-15sec of the track were taken from the "Daily Planet" scene from the first Superman movie (1978). You can find the scene here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LRbJTs16--4.html You can hear "this is it Mac.." ("the daily planet" is edited out) followed by "fresh fruit" repeated a couple of times.
👍 The last of the long format songs they did. I enjoyed hearing this song live with a edit version the video behind Neil made the song even more better thank you for the video always great to hear a fans opinion of great music
Jamel... I cannot begin to thank you enough for your Rush reaction videos. I was fortunate enough to be at “the alignment of the planets”; I was 14 years old in 1974 and lived in Cleveland, Ohio when Donna Halpert (a radio DJ on WMMS, Cleveland’s big rock station) helped break Rush onto the U.S. music scene. First time I saw Mr. Peart play, I knew I had to be a drummer. Unknowingly, he taught me to play as I got to know every nuance of their tracks and played to them daily. Fast forward over 45 years later, and I’m still playing the drums and living by a lot of Neil’s philosophy. Watching your reactions have brought me completely back to those first days of discovering Rush and ALL that initial excitement and fervor. Thank you!!
@@joconnell8145 The singer of a RusH cover band.... I've mispronounced it all my life, and don't think I ever written or typed it... So I hope you can find in your heart to forgive me and not continue publicly shaming me..... I see you're a purist and I've obviously committed and unforgivable sin and offended you... so let me offer my deepest apologies and hope that I haven't ruined your entire night....
Neil based this song on the John Dos Passos book U.S.A. Trilogy written in 1938. The Camera Eye was one of the parts of that trio. Dos Passos didn’t use traditional punctuation and sentence structure. It was more of a stream of consciousness. There is a part of that section where Dos Passos convey’s the feeling of an immigrant walking the streets of Manhattan in the small hours of the night feeling the energy of the city and the sense of possibility while also realizing the harsh realities. This newly arrived immigrant felt the power of the city in that night. As he walked the streets he watched the shop window dressers changing out the mannequins in the window displays, the street cleaners working through the night, the drunk bum stumbling down an ally, the grown of a saxophone in the night he wanted to do it all, ride every taxi and walk every street. He felt in that moment he was free. He could be anyone and anything. He felt the power of the city. Rush captures that feeling in both New York and London.
30-40 years ago critics, radio, and supposed music fans laughed at us for loving this band. Now, not only are you part of our family of fans around the world....you're a historian and archivist for this band and all the other music you react to. There will not be a trio like this ever again. Thank you and keep it up!
Jamal!!! THANK YOU!!! I KNEW you would LOVE this song!! Geddy's Bass playing and TONE is UFB!! And Neil's quick drum fills are tastefully syncopated and F#%&ing AWESOME!! ( I could never duplicate the part..) Probably my favorite Alex studio Guitar performance! Beautiful lyrics sung beautifully! I just want to give you a big hug brother!!!
Neil's drumming has a classical feel to it, sort of an orchestral symphony quality. Not your standard 4/4 rock drummer. The placement of his drum fills and the style he creates is what makes the mans drumming so unique. Technical, creative, inspiring, awesome. His lyrics follow this same path of creative inspiration.
Please have '' Available light " be your next Rush song bro.... Please share this lyrical and musical gem with the world. This is a journey into brother Neil's head and how he viewed life. It's so beautiful and my favourite piece as a 40 year long fan.
I miss this band. They gave us all so much and seemed to genuinely love each other’s company. Three musicians that generated as rich a live sound that I’ve ever heard- this includes full orchestras. Godspeed Neil.
Remember Niel wrote all of the Lyrics , as well as playing excellent drums. Thanks Jamel for bringing them more popularity because they deserve all the credit that they can get. They are hard working guys
Incredible creativity by 3 tall souls. Camera Eye is a quintessential Rush song. The opening alone is an epic tale of what’s to come. Music today doesn’t hold a candle to this composition.
I was blessed to see this tour. In Chicago at the Amphitheater. Max Webster opened up for them! Another Fantastic Canadian band!! Love it man! Thank you.
Sin discusión una de las mejores canciones de Rush e igualmente quizás una de las más subestimadas!! Está canción es otro nivel y te pone en otro nivel espiritualmente y emocionalmente......... gracias RUSH.
Others have said it here. This is an incredible song live. It’s one of my favorite songs of all time. Thank you again for listening to Rush. I’m glad you have enjoyed listening to them. I have enjoyed your reaction to the songs and your interpretation of them. Peace out my Brother. ✌️
He did the Necromancer and Fountain of Lamneth. Check it out. I wouldn’t say it’s their most prog. But it as early 1975 Rush- it was the first album to give a hint of the progressive rock music that was to come. So yea I could say it was their first Prog album. It had a whole one song take up a whole side in “ Fountain of Lamneth”. I think though their previous two albums Fly By Night and their first Album had vestiges of Prog rock. Check out “ Before and After” on their debut album and “ Beneath, Between, and Behind” on Fly By Night.
Oh how right you are. Their shows were something else entirely. It's not a lie to say that I left every venue which was graced with their presence as a person changed for the better. I don't say this to 'rub it in' to those less fortunate, but the power of those three musicians live on stage was so unique and special that I doubt anyone could ever replace them.
Every time I hear Rush I cry. We lost an amazing drummer. Thank god for video, vinyl, dvd for music and live performances. The professor forever in my heart and in the catalog of my youth! 🥰
Yes, that was Brother Alex you were hearing. He doesn't get his due nearly often enough, but he had an absolutely incredible feel for exactly what every song needed. He was the thread that wove through the fabrics of the rhythm section and the vocals. He held everything together with such virtuosity and elegance.
My all time favorite Rush song. I was lucky enough to have a friend with an older brother when this album came out who made sure to make us listen to it. At 10 years old we knew it was far beyond anything we had heard to that point. One of my life's greatest pleasures was to hear them play it live. So grateful to see you enjoying it the way I do each time. Thank you brother.
If you want suggestions as to what you should listen next from Rush I would have to say these two major albums, *Grace under pressure* and *Power Windows* . These are definitely different from their earlier stuff but it's still the same three guys playing with their immense talent and as artists you can't blame them for NOT doing the same stuff over and over, it's called evolution. They are among my favorite albums and I have a feeling that you will like them too.
Such a great song. Written as if a poet wrote it. One can argue Neil was a poet. Timeless, never get tired hearing this song. Its what RUSH does, timeless music.
As a lifelong Rush fan, it’s awesome to see other people experiencing the greatness of Rush for the first time. On Rush’s Time Machine Tour when they played Moving Pictures in it’s entirety, they recorded a live DVD of the show in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. I had great seats for the show and it was one of their best! Keep those awesome and genuine reactions coming. RIP NP.
Been a fan since I was a young lad (54 now) - hands down this is my favorite RUSH song and Lord knows I've heard all their music and was blessed to see them live more than a few times. lyrically brilliant and musically magical as only RUSH can do. Thank you for the upload! They seem oblivious To a soft spring rain Like an English rain So light, yet endless From a leaden sky
What made Rush so great for me was wondering what insane riffs they would come up with next. Every track this band did will stand the test of time. I'm so glad I was alive at the same time that this band existed. Neil you were a big part of this greatness. RIP and thank you. There will never be another band like Rush ever! They are one in a googooplex!
Find the live video of this song when neal is missing a tom drum,he smiles when his drum tech finally gets it placed..but look at the way he has to figure out how to play without it..his mind was racing
This song is such a favorite for me. It seems like Rush in real time. This era of Rush seemed completely organic and unforced. This song starts off as if walking into towards a new day. Rush invites us listeners into their house and lets us look out their windows. And what a view and what wonderful company. I find this to be their most joyous song. Which is saying a lot. My friend Coby leaned a bit toward country music and this was his favorite track off Moving Pictures. It speaks to the widespread appeal of this record. Neil is a great storyteller. The band tell stories with their playing. They paint moving pictures.
I saw them perform this live on the time machine tour. I think it's the first time they did that, I had seen them or five times before since 1985 and they never did it.
I was lucky enough to see Rush perform three times. Each time was so special. I instinctively knew that when this band stopped touring, the world would be less beautiful.
This song often is overlooked because of all the hits on side one. When you listen to this on headphones you can really appreciate how talented this band was. Glad you were able to complete the entire album, it was so worth it !
Sharing this to a few Rush fan clubs. Bro music is in your soul, it's great to see someone else feel it, and describe 💯 what it feels like. Thanks for ALL the reviews you've done and for sharing that fire that is the soul of music with everyone.
I've loved the textures in this song since the first time I heard it as a teenager. It took me a few hours to figure out how to play it but I never mastered the solo. I was content to play a rhythm section during the solo. Love it!
Jamel...you really should check out RUSH's amazing 80's albums, POWER WINDOWS and HOLD YOUR FIRE. Power Windows is especially stacked and they all really liked that one; Big Money, Grand Designs, Middle Town Dreams...ect...Dont be put off by the "80s keyboard era" comments (keyboards? Geddy's BEST bass playing is on those two albums!). Its some of their best music...you will love it, guaranteed! They are all in their prime!
So, if my records are accurate, there are 5 Rush albums you haven't touched yet (no reactions). Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, Presto, and Test For Echo. You've reacted to 15.5% of the studio tracks (that includes the solo releases by Geddy and Alex - which you should check out some time)
Heard the album all the way through when i was 18 in 1981 on its first week of release. I knew it was an instant classic and 40 years later it holds up as true classic.
Absolutely love having found you months ago on RU-vid! Rush is also my favorite band. Music is the true unifier! Love your tee-shirt it is beautiful. Please continue to spread your joy and expertise in Music! Peace to you and your family!
This is pure example of why we all must appreciate Rush and be thankful for. Rush never conformed to the record company requests and after 2112 were left alone to create their own music, no matter how weird it was and the result of an artist or group of artists is that we are fortunate to get masterpieces like this song. It makes me wonder how many other great artists never got to show their true art in their prime because they caved to the pressures and wants of the suits. Such a shame… thank you Rush. Peace and kindness to you all.
I was away a while Jamel. I'm back re-watching all your rush reactions because they're my favorite band as well. I still love them and I'm not surprised you're almost to a million subs. Let's GO!
I saw Rush perform this while album live and when this song started the roof about lifted off the Toyota Center. It was incredible to see this song in particular and the album done in its entirety! Great show!!! Great reaction!! Watch the concert, when you get a chance. You won't be disappointed!!
