I’m a 58 year old black man and I’ve been into Rush since Moving Pictures came out! ... I LOVE their musicality and as a hobby drummer, Neil has always been at the top ... BUT this is the first time I’ve read all the lyrics of this song! I’m falling love all over again!
I remember geddy and Alex at the Taylor Hawkins tribute with various guests (chad smith, Danny Carey) it just wasn’t rush. It was proof that sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
Peart was a lyrical genius, no other way to put it, the ability to turn a phrase, the ability to touch the pulse of society and say what others couldn't or wouldn't...Rest in Peace Professor!
@@livinaftermidnight9651 Mine was Signals and Power Windows. Loved this band all my life, they are pure perfectionist and the sound is blowing me everytime!
One of the many things about Rush I love, is when Neil's lyrics was commenting the times that they were living in. And when we read these decades later we realise those lyrics are totally timeless, and often are relevant today as well.
Neil Peart, the drummer, is a master lyricist. He wrote all of their lyrics from when he started in their band in summer of 1974, after they made their first album with their first drummer John Rutsey.
Not all of them. Oddly enough, "Tom Sawyer", one of their most well-known songs, isn't even Neil's writing. It was written by another lyricist named Pye Dubois.
In the December 1985 Rush Backstage Club newsletter, drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said: Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be-namely me, I guess.
Reaction channels are a dime a dozen, but this one is by far my favorite, not just cause Jamel is my friend and I know these are genuine and not for pure clout, he really listens, the comments that he makes during pause breaks or after the tracks finish let me know he's really paying attention, keep it up brotha! Almost at 100k subscribers!
Ohhhhhhhhhh sheeeeeeeeet. Am.i the only dude (or dudette) that noticed this comment from Nate. Jamel is always throwing his name down on rush songs/vids. Well done Nate. I pushed for xanadu live. I think you pushed it over the goalline. Dont be a stranger in the comments homeboy
I too am only here because of your requests …so I thank you for that as you're right on all counts. Jamel clearly listens intently (and getting it) as on occasion I've seen him recognise the drumming patterns and evolution and anticipating what's coming next. On a first listen that's impressive. Keep using your influence. Cheers man :)
Jamel and Lost in Vegas are my two favorite reaction channels on RU-vid and I’m so happy you’re here Nate to keep giving Jamel these great recommendations
You need to listen to Digital Man from Signals. I call it one of their “funkiest” songs. Bass is 100% FIRE!! Check it! Love the vids man! Good luck and take care.
The Graceful Savage I really love the mix of the Signals album too. Geddy and Neil are always great but their work on Signals is some of my fave. Of course the first time I saw them live was on the Signals tour so maybe biased? 🤷🏻♂️😂
One of my favorite RUSH songs. Neil Peart has talked how The Police were a favorite of the band and you can hear The Police influence in this tune which closes Moving Pictures and throughout their next album Signals
Woot! Woot! Another classic Rush reaction. I've been a Rush fan since 1980, I love seeing younger folks reactions to such classic rock! I remember buying this brand new the week it was released....on cassette! LOL. The lyrics never fail to amaze the woke younger audiences once they hear Rush. "A tired mind become a shape shifter, everybody needs a mood lifter, everybody needs reverse polarity." Such clever wordsmithing in a time I lived before having a home computer of any kind. Rush was always so cutting edge back then!
Since 1974, I was 12. Its amazing what 3 guys created, and they didn't change for nobody, no label, They are their own cool. I doubt if , in a thousand years another band will impact music like RUSH has. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about Opinions, they are like assholes, everybody's got one. Lol... Glad your digging RUSH. ✌😎 A.P.
The greatest band of all time. I love watching anyone react to them. I've seen them on every tour since Hold Your Fire 1988 and the music that they composed will eternally resonate
The fact that Rush is the first band I was ever into (mother played it all the time when was a kid growing up) pretty much spoiled me when it comes to music. It's tough to find other things that measure up. Also, I really want to see you react to Primus. Doesn't matter what song, pick any of them. This'll be hilarious. 😂
My friend, there is nothing more gratifying to a long time Rush fan as to watch the door open in a new listener's head when they "get it". You picked the perfect song- brilliant musicianship, combined with perfect arrangement and sublime lyrics. One of the all-time jewels in an extensive catelog of treasure. Rush is absolutely the "total package", a band with few, if any, peers. The only thing better was seeing them live, and this song in particular, when they played it. So happy to see this video!
If you liked "Jeremy" from Pearl Jam, try Rush's "The Pass". Deep powerful lyrics. Also may I request "Anthem" as well as "Beneath, Between & Behind" from Rush. Thank you. I love your reactions -- keep it up!!
Neil is, in my opinion, one of the greatest lyricists of all time. He's the only lyrics writer that makes me look at life in a different way. A more positive way.
By far...... En español: 1000% de acuerdo contigo es un genio y un ser humano único lo plasma en sus letras y tienes razón te hace ver la vida más positiva y mejor para con los demás mi estimado!!! Saludos desde Ciudad de México. Emilio
That's the professor behind the kit with those lyrics. Love your reactions brother! Forever grateful my dad raised me on rush. One of the best who have ever done progressive rock!
Brother Jamal... I discovered rush at 14, 1975, after 7 years of drum lessons, found my Mentor, SIr Peart*... He gave my sidewalk pavement to walk on, and I performed at that call... drumming professionally for many years... Thank you for your Power of Observation !!!
As hurt and upset as I am over the loss of one of my biggest idols (and I’m a guitarist not even a drummer) it still gives me chills up my spine to watch someone react to their songs for the first time . I’ll admit , a majority of people’s reactions I don’t believe cause there’s just no way you’ve never heard of a song like “smells like teen spirit” by nirvana or some BS like that’s haha but when you do reaction videos to rush AND you’re reacting to their B sides now this is a true reaction. Thank you for being legit about the best band in the world. Glad you’re diggin them. Now go turn everyone you know onto them lol
Yeah that's tough because if that is a fun version of a song they've played live 20,000 times. Part of that performance is changing it up for their own enjoyment. So here's the tough part you have to review both that live version and the original which is a masterpiece. Start with the studio version so you can see where they are coming from.
I agree that anyone should always start with the original track, and YOU should tell him that, the fact is it’s a great version and a dedication to the city who got them air play is beside the point.
Meh. Anything off their debut album is always sub-par Rush. If it predates Neil Peart, you might as well just be listening to ZZ Top or some other generic classic rock.
My favorite song from moving pictures and most underrated….. you right Jamal. This song has it all great message…..great beat, jazzy yet so rock and roll and even a bass solo………… drum runs……. And yes. Those deep deep lyrics.
First time watcher and new subscribers. Your expressions are priceless! I've been a loyal Rush fan since seeing them live in 1981 Moving Pictures tour. Keep up the great work!
Aw man . . . "Available Light" is one of my all time faves, the SNAP of Peart's snare . . . GODLY. Also "Losing It", "Between the Wheels" and "Everyday Glory" are huge faves of mine.
Available Light is a truly deep cut from Presto! Highly underrated tune from an equally underrated album!! Scars, War Paint, Chain Lighting, Red Tides, from top to bottom an incredible album. First from this album, however should be The Pass.
@@brettmarlar4154 Hold Your Fire is the culmination of their progression. They kind of started over again on Presto and slowly reverted backwards away from grand orchestration and production to whatever you want to call their later album's styles.
@@evankeal Hold Your Fire, was a turning point of their career. Not the beginning of a "devolution" or "regression". They did strip things back a bit for Presto, only because they wanted to shift the focus back to their core instruments. There were still plenty of over dubs like layering of guitar parts, and the keyboards were still very present, just pushed back from the forefront. They became more of a secondary support for the guitar as opposed to the other way around. Alex would even star adding Mandola and Bazuki to add different textures as opposed to synths and effects. If anything, this freed Alex up to play more, complex and challenging parts; thus allowing them to regain some of that raw edge and intensity that they had lost from the 70's and blend it with the sophistication gained in the 80's. A song like "Driven" wouldn't have happened if they were still beholden to all the synths and sequencers. We definitely wouldn't have gotten the instrumentals since then.
Thanks, About time we got your reaction to Vital Signs. Favorite Band and one my favorite songs by Rush! Your comments and reactions are the best. Enjoying your reactions to Rush, truly enjoying a new generation finding out how great of a band they are, you definitely leading the way. Thanks Again, Keep Rocking My Brother🤟 Ps The ultimate was meeting them at a meet and greet on tour in 2013, The Best
Want great/meaningful lyrics (but still with fabulous music): "Red Sector A" - holocaust "The Pass" - Suicide "Manhatten Project" - The 'A' Bomb "Losing it" - Losing ones skill/talent through aging "The Garden" - How one should live life in general (this is on many a fans funeral list) Red Barchetta - story of dystopian future when cars are banned (similar theme as 2112, but condensed) Cygus X-1 Book 1 & 2 (must be done together really) - function of the brain told as a sci-fi type story …. and many others … these are ones where Lyric videos useful more music orientated classics (that I'd recommend): Jacobs Ladder - depicts a passing storm Leave That things Alone - pure instrumental depicting the mating dance …. that'll do from me for now
RUSH my favorite all time band. Though I like and have seen plenty of other's. You want lyrics of RUSH you should check out The Twilight Zone off the 2112 lp. RUSH does a rap bit in their song ROLL THE BONES on their ROLL THE BONES LP. You should check that out. Plus songs like XANADU from their A Farewell to Kings LP. Actually you should check out their entire lp catalog.
...your a real sensitive listener..big ears..big intuition..it’s always cool watching your hip reactions to rush...especially the soulfulness of Geddy’s voice.bright moments from Australia
I have commented before and you definitely get it in terms of the band, their lyrics and musicianship. Not many people truly appreciate it to the depths of its creation. I am honored to have you in our Rush family and no doubt many would agree.
Also look at King Crimson from their USA album: 21st Century Schizoid Man, Exiles, Asbury Park, Starless, Larks Tongues in Aspic part 2, and Lament. You might like those.
I really like watching your Rush reactions. They're my favorite band and it's always fun to see how others are impacted by their music when listening for the first time. Might I suggest the song "Losing It"? Very different sound for Rush, but they totally nail it. You'll understand when you hear it. Keep up the good work!
It is so cool to see you opening up and "getting" Rush. Regarding the lyrics...and music...as Neil said in an interview....Rush is a thinking man's band.
Mel...If I may refer to as your family does...I have been the 'ultimate' RUSH fan since I was a teen - yep decades - I got hooked on their live album 'All The World's a Stage". I found the drums of Neil Peart to be beyond stellar and Geddy and Alex to be phenomenal as well! Thanks for bringing the excitement back of re-discovering this awesome band. Thank You!
I'm singing along and getting shivers. As if this was my 1st time hearing it, and I've been enjoying this track and album since 1980 :). Thank you , as many others, have taken us back when we were first hearing Rush and each album, when it was all new and we were being blown away by their musicianship, compositions and Neil's lyrics! Thank you Jamel \m/. Haha! Glad you caught that "EVERY!body" in the fadeout . . . always loved that :D.
Glad to see some finally listened to one of the most underrated Rush songs they've produced. It's been one of my favorites for may years, this one and "Witch Hunt". You might want to check out "The Camera Eye" some day too. Very few people have reacted to this song.
I've been listening to Rush since 1982, I've been to 22 concerts of theirs in the nyc area. But when I watch you listen to Rush, it feels like I am listening to Rush for the first time all over again. Thank you
Jamal, I just love how you get them. I loved what you said about lyrically this could have been an awesome Rap. I’m not a fan of rap musically, but the artistry in it, is the rhythm of the vocal. The technical brilliance to make the human voice be able to rhythmically DO what good rap artists do is tough as hell. And my ear can appreciate that. So what you had to say made sense. There is a reason why having a percussionist like Neil being a lyricist is so damn genius. And you caught it right away.
You hit the nail on the head when you referenced the early/mid 80's soundtrack/ambiance music. The synths were very familiar sounding . RUSH , of course , being superior musicians made the best use of the current technology , at that time. 1976 - 1988 was my favorite era of RUSH
Hi my fellow man who is so solid and truly is digesting the cerebral and incredibly tight offering Rush provides. You're such a breath of fresh air, witnessing you absorbing the prowess of a professional band for discerning people. God love ya buddy. ✌🙂🇨🇦. I had the privilege of interacting with these guys, Alex Lifeson's son and I used to work and chill together. It's my personal opinion that the drummer, Neil Peart quite effectively WAS a humble, unrivaled professor on the drum kit. Love and peace be with you and yours. Rush are topshelf family-centred gentlemen. Compliments from Canada. ✌
