Rush created their own record label, Moon records, and pressed a thousand or so LP's for this first album. One copy ended up at a Cleveland Ohio album oriented rock station, and their new program director and DJ Donna Halper started playing this song. This got the attention of Mercury records, who signed Rush. The liner notes for the Mercury release included 'With Special Thanks to Donna Halper of WMMS in Cleveland for getting the ball rolling'.
Rush never got stuck in one genre! They were able to cover most of rock styles masterfully!!! Working man live in Cleveland is a must see!! Absolutely bananas!!!
Yes, I will add my voice to saying you have to watch their live performance in Cleveland doing this song. They were 20 when they recorded this and they were pushing 60 when they did the Cleveland version and it will blow you away! Also, Rush returned to their heavier sound on their later albums. Please check out Headlong Flight as well Cheers
If you like this take it to an entirely new level with this song at the Cleveland performance time machine tour. They all unleash their talents and it's freaking insane
In a few weeks you should revisit the live version of this song. Live in Cleveland 2011 I believe. Original song written in 1974 and they’re performing it better than ever almost 40 years later.
You picked the right song to fuck with hombre!!!!! This tune helped me through the crazy-high school years in the late 70’s!!!! The whole 2112 album was a god send to us back then!!!! A couple of beers and a bit of Mexican weed and life was great!!!! It’s not often I find someone who felt the exact same way I did on a first time listen to this 46 years ago!!!! I saw this live in 1978 in San Antonio as a 17 year old and it was fantastic!!!!! This tune is my all time favorite Rush song and that’s saying a lot!!!! Just saying!!!!! So says Austin Tx!!!!! 😎🍸
This is off their first album in 1974. Total banger. I think they were 20 when they wrote this. Peart wasn't the drummer until the 2nd album (Fly By Night). Check out the live version from Cleveland in 2011 or 2012...mind blowing!
20 years old when they performed this, when they played it on the radio they were flooded with calls from people wanting to know when the new Led Zeppellin record came out and it led to them being signed to a record deal in the States.
Just imagine they were teenagers when they wrote this song! Fire ! Thanks for another great Rush reaction. See you in Cleveland for the live performance
Rush never stayed with one style. They were always experimenting, and they enjoyed stretching their artistic minds. Their early work is amazing, but so is all of their work. The more you listen to it, the more it grows on you. I have been a fan since 1975 or 76, and I listen and listen and listen and it just sounds better and better. I just can't get enough of them. They were amazing artists. I say artists, because that is what they were. Genius artists. I am just loving all the younger people experiencing them for the first time. Learning about them and realizing how amazing they are. It is sort of retribution for all the hate they got when I was younger. They make me smile the way you did. I told everyone I knew about them and all I got was "Rush? That guy Geddy Lee sucks!" When I was young, they were my escape in more ways than one. But I loved them, and I listened through their entire 40-year career.
3 am in CA, saw the 2112 reaction and watched it thru. Even w/o sound it was great! A second listen will be just as good but hoping you're able to edit. Loving your Rush reactions!
I really appreciated the comment you made about why RUSH didn't simply stay with this hard ass music. I have often wondered that myself! This was just so damn good, I wish they would have continued with this sound. But, as they got older and better, the urge to experiment with new sounds and genres is too strong to resist. Anyway, RUSH continued to be a, amazing band over the years. Thanks mate!🤘☮
Again the greatest band of all time lyrically and musically!!!!!,Alex van Halen was asked how does it feel to be the greatest guitars he said go ask Alex lifeson
Alex played a white Gibson 355 in the early years that gave that raw sound i grew up on in the early 70s That raw screaming sounds gets lost in the mid 80s to me, Im a early Rush fan till i die
They are transition Gods, Rush came up with such cool, smooth transitions sometimes you only catch them afterwards, like, wait, what? How the fuck did they figure that one out, still one of their very best songs and technically their first.
I knew u'd go apeshit for this one, and I was right, haha! That fat bass sound, that (those!) solos! For me, this sort of echoes Zep's "Dazed & Confused," in its two verse/power chord beginning, then a sort of interlude before launching into an out-of-control solo(s), then back to the original verse and power chords. Def one of my fave Rush songs, too. Insanely good.
It’s not Neil on this track. Rush, right up through the recording of the record, Rush had a different drummer, John Rutsey. He was a childhood friend and band mate of the other guys. But when they signed their recording contract and were going to be put on the road, management, specifically co manager Vic Wilson, had deep concerns about John’s health in the rock and roll vortex. According to Wilson, John, who was a diabetic, was a real partier and was not taking care of himself. To quote Vic, “If we put John out on that tour, we’re bringing him home in a body bag!’ It was not for John’s abilities that he was let go, it was for heath reasons.”
One more vote for the Live in Cleveland performance of this song. Even if you don't react to it, be sure to check it out. Alex if furious on the guitar
I so dig how you dig these tunes! That's my favorite Rush tune too. ok I have some suggestions for tunes.....tommorrow never knows by the beatles. mind it was recorded on a 4 track and it sounds this good. in the light be zeppelin studio version. blind faith cant find my way home....woodstock crosby stills nash ... ringo starr but george harrison wrote it It dont come easy. That will keep you busy and there is so much more !!! and ted nugent Stangle hold.
Off their first album where John Rutsey was the drummer before replaced with the legendary Neil Peart *RIP*. Working Man is by far the one track played the most from this album but the other tracks definitely deserve a listen if you like this song. Try What You’re Doing, Finding my Way, Here Again to get a sense of Rush without Neil’s influence.
Add 1 more vote for the Live in Cleveland - Time Machine Tour performance. I'd like to add a song from their last album too... Headlong Flight, I think you'll enjoy that too.
1st big hit off their 1st album... sorry to hear about the 2112 reacts, I saw it uploaded but was going to wait until I had time to watch the whole thing.
