We didn't get colour tv til 1975 in Australia. I'm 55 & my mum bought her first colour tv in 1977. The late 60s to mid 80s produced some amazing Australian music. Aussies in the conservative 1950s grew up with what we call 'The cultural cringe." We felt our culture was worthless next to Britain & Europe. Then there was, especially under Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, a bold belief that we were capable of making our own unique culture. Then you get incredible Australian rock & great movies like Mad Max & Picnic at Hanging Rock. The history of Australian art has been a journey of finding our own voice.

"The Real Thing" is the debut single by Australian singer Russell Morris, released in 1969. Written by Johnny Young and produced by Ian "Molly" Meldrum,[1] it was a huge hit in Australia and has become an Australian rock classic. It also achieved success in the United States, reaching the top of the charts in Chicago, Houston, and New York City.[2]

To get into the American music scene back then, you had to pay for your management to go to the USA and promote the band, then you had to pay to get a tape played for the management of a big act that you might get a tour supporting. You could try it on your own, but without the finance, that is very difficult. The bands that made it, Goanna and others, they were the ones who were lucky and got that very rare break. Chisel tried and failed in the USA, so did the Divynals and Mental as Anything. The list goes on. I know that Wendy and the Rocketts manager went to the USA several times, trying to get her a support on a major tour. They ended up getting booked for the European leg of a Brian Adams tour, he threw them off the tour after they were called back for encores in Berlin. They sat around in London and ended up supporting ZZ Top. I should mention that Wendy was charting higher in Berlin than Brian Adams at the time.

You need to listen to the whole song without stopping all the time, then react. His voice to this day is still superb. He still tours the country performing.

I enjoy having it broken down to explain the bits I wouldn't notice for myself. Scrolling back and forth from a delayed commentary would be a hassle

Russell lives on the Gold Coast now ..... was lucky to catch him three times in Brisbane in the last twelve months ..... his live shows are still outstanding, his bands are incredible. Seeing him live with Ian Peres giving it the full Wolfmother on bass is something you'll never forget.

believe me - everyone I knew had black and white tellys in 1971. We got our first color not long before the 80s - he's freaking amazing live
