Black folks thought that we were exempt from the sexual assault wave that has hit Hollywood. However, where power can be exerted, there will be abuse. The Black church is where Black people will find parallels to Hollywood.
YES YOU LOOK LIKE YOUR IN CHARGE OF THE GIRLS TODAY BC THAT WIG YOU HAD ON YESTERDAY YOU WAS LOOKING LIKE YOU WAS ONLY IN CHARGE OF THE CAFETERIA BEING MEAN TO THEM KIDS TALKING BOUT "AINT NO MO GREEN BEANS"!
The whole black community knew Russell was a nasty old man. Hell he started dating Kimora when she was 17 and pursued her when she was just 15. And I low key need that hot pink lipstick.
It's not even women not being valued. What about Terry Crews? He's a tall buff black man and that movie exec grabbed his privates in the middle of a party, in front of Terry's wife! It's a power thing.
CreoleKing Yes, we need to also talk to our boys and young men. They are being treated the SAME way. Let them know don't let anyone intimidate them or shaming them into not reporting this mess. Tell anyone who will listen.
You better Preach! Tell the truth and shame the Devil. Too many secrets..." Don't tell people what happens in this house." Blaming the child instead of the adult. Hiding that weird Uncle, instead of putting his butt in jail.
Towanda Brown Yes! Black people always don t want people in "their business " or worried what the neighbours will think. Fuck That! If someone is a paedophile or rapist they need to be named, shamed and brought to justice.
"I found Strength, Courage, and Wisdom...Inside of me, all along" Yesssss India Arie Acoustic Soul reference!!!! I Caught it sista Dineva! Also yes I too was raped and sexually assaulted and never told...for those exact reasons. Im so glad that you and others are starting to understand why all of us "me toos" just never told. Literally not being able to afford too, not being able to take the insult to injury that comes with it, not wanting to deal with people thinking we are lying. Rape is about power nothing else. This is great and a wonderful start. I know you are relaying this message as Dinevah..but I can tell Q really had an Aha moment here..love you!
So sorry that happened to you sis. You didn't deserve that violation. I'm so glad that you are now finding your strength. As a person pursuing a mental health profession, I also want to add that getting therapy after the fact is very important. Even if you feel like you've moved on, I hope that you are in touch with a good therapist. I wish the best for you in the future!
+Tia Jones Thank you so much Tia, I never did...I think you are absolutely correct...because the wild part about it all it took me about a year to even realize that's what happened....i took it as "he didnt mean it, he wasnt being himself" no....it was definitely rape. Thank you for your support and for the work you're doing. We need more folx like you
I'm a musician...im in church every sunday...ive seen some stuff over the past 25+ years...got called crazy for not being brainwashed and accepting...well, the whole world is about to see why I'm the rebel that I am when it comes to these religious structures we call worship houses
Garrett Glaspie yes it is happening ain't it. I look at my friends that is still big in the church and get offended when people say bad stuff about the church and SMDH.
@7:00 - 8:00 we DO #PROCESS SHAME differently than others because we have been taught as kids, "stay in yo place," "no one listens to you kids when adults talking," & it's in the cultural where we teach OUR KIDS, OUR GIRLS/LADIES/WOMEN that their pain doesn't count. Furthermore, we are still shaming our kids saying "their fast," "they ain't too innocent..." LOOK 👀 @ the first set of teenagers in the R. Kelly case. His former music teacher dogged all them girls and that lady is old enough to know better.
KaneneProductions Amen!! Never understood how people in the black community especially older black women will say that it's the child's fault that grown men are looking at her because she's fast!! That is a child at the end of the day it doesn't matter what she has on or how she acts. That does not give a grown man the right to look at her sexually or to touch her in a sexual manner. The black community really makes me sick sometimes.
I don't think he could pulled most women he's been with with out the help of his position & power. He didn't have to develop his social skills. I met him when I was in my very early 20's(looked like 17). He gave me the creeps! I never forgot it. He gave off predatory vibes. I wasn't surprised by the allegations at all. I just wondered how come it took so long to come out.
The black church has predators and aggressors, it goes both ways. My mom married a pastor and saw first hand women throw themselves at him just to get the title and power that comes with being a "1st Lady." However, of course some church leaders use their influence and power to take advantage of women/girls. I hate to generalize any group, just like I hate being generalized; but as you said, this is a MAN problem, not a race issue. It happens in all areas of power, unfortunately. Call them all out! Let God.
YASSSSSSS TELL IT. No one should be shocked by Russell. He was messing with Kimora when she was underaged and just started modeling. That’s why she said he couldn’t be around their kids without someone present. We think the same way.
NoeNae Monae Ive always wondered if he found his kids sexually attractive, and thought it was odd even back when they had the reality show, he was never really alone with his daughters
Gemini Unboxed some teens get with grown men cuz they get a rush from it. Its something to brag about with their friends. Just as you will find many middle school girls trying to get with boys in HS. They always use the excuse "boys my age are immature".
I believe it- he was all over Kimora before she was even 18 years old. He’s always had young, young gfs and this isn’t surprising at all. But the cat is out da bag now!
Best video hands down. Thank you for shedding light on this. I am a very proud member of the black church but I believe 100% people protect their pastor and church. Will shame a floozy but vindicate a pastor touching inappropriately on women. In addition to men lording their power over women because we are not seen as people but as property in the community, workplace, and world. Thank you for bringing comedy and seriousness to this issue!
dineva!!! that black church used to be a place of revolutionary thinking now its a place of complacency and blind obedience. all this money in the black church but our community suffers. i was propositioned by a popular pastor in Atlanta when i was 19. i tell no lies.
A lot of people have that pervert uncle that are known to feel on the all the nieces. And I really feel sorry for the boys, I really do, you’re weak if you tell.
It’s been known for YEARS that Uncle Russell has had his thing for YOUNG models. If you ever watch the Tyra & Kimora interview they did together they speak on it. Tyra was already in the industry & warned Kimora NOT to date Russell because he had a “type”. But in his defense, Russell has NEVER denied what he likes. Unfortunately, in the black community we’ve always swept these acts under the carpet. The acts of the pastors & deacons. But now that we have the safe space where people can speak up 🙌🏼🙌🏽🙌🏾
I believe it too Neva! Hell Kimora was 17 when they was dating. Tyra said it too. It's an abuse of power. And you got a point about the black church! Everybody got secrets and it's because you're told to deal with it
This is true, the drummer(27 at the time) at my church thought he got a 14 year girl Pregnant and I’m still bothered by his admission because the church didn’t stop him from working with the kids
I'm not shocked about Russell at all. I think he was waiting for his turn. I'm 100 percent sure he's still getting paid from all of the businesses he owns. There's always a backdoor to that.
Yes I agree, relationships involving those who are 10 years apart and more are just nasty and are doomed for failure. It wreaks exploitation and the expectation of dominance.
As a black woman who dates black men I can say "consent" is not something taught to our young black men. I can count on both hands & feet how many times I had to fight my way out of a situation because these "men" don't get that NO means NO! It's sad & it's something we don't talk about. & as a young woman I've always been afraid to admit these things because of shame. WE HAVE TO DO BETTER!!!
MY GOD! First, I believe you. Second, I’m so sorry that someone who was suppose to have your best interest at heart violated you like that. Third, the shame is not on you! I hope you find healing
Thank u guys 4 the love n support. But 2 top it off he called me on his death bed n said he was SORRY it was n that moment I overstood 1st he was SORRY 4 himself 2nd TRUST few and n between I have 5 kids that has NEVER seen the inside of a church frfr
The behind the scene sexual activities and hypocrisy in the church is the main reason why so many people don’t go to church anymore and have lost faith and don’t believe in god anymore. If the very person that is suppose to protect you and guide you is the one hurting you then it sets you up for trust issues for the rest of your life.
Speaking wise words! 🙏🙏🙏 People, especially us, love to make excuses (Bill Cosby, R. Kelly, Uncle Chester, etc.)!!! I agree 100% on people speaking up when there is a safe place! U are very articulate!
I agree, something is wrong and sick about being in a relationship with someone old enough to be your parent or grandparent (in regular folk years, 20-40).
We also forget about the family dynamic. There's families where sexual abuse goes in for years and we as a culture don't address it. I'm glad this shit us coming to light for those that it truly effects. We need to do better with our boys and girls. We need to raise our boys like we raise our girls. Stop excusing behavior because it's comfortable.
Lena Horne granddaughter letter to Russell said the same thing, she said she was coming out bc she was in a better position to do so, than others may be! Basically, she got money and don't have to be scared. Some women may not be in that spot.
It's crazy because as you talk about Russell Simmons I remember a specific episode where Cynthia had met up with him I think this was around the time she created the Bailey agency but she said something about him always dating young girls
loved ur commentary and analogy of whats going as its creating a safe place for these victims to talk 👌 the victims are finding out there is more power in a group of women saying almost the same senerio (hotel room meetings)😤 Thank you for that example to the churches👏 JUST WHO IS "NESSA GIRL"?
That’s why Russell doesn’t like Tyra Banks. She told him that he was too old to be trying to get with Kimora back when they were both young models. Everyone in the fashion industry knew how he was.
And also with black folks a lot of the sickness is found within the families. There are uncles touching cousins and all sorts of things happening behind closed doors that are being spoken of now. ❤️✨
