By invading #Ukraine, #Putin has made the biggest strategic blunder of his life. Even if the Russian army were to win every battle, #Russia would still lose the war.

Russia may take territory but I don’t see how they can occupy a nation of 40 million who don’t want them. China is also not as supportive as Putin wants, something I learn from this channel. Being from Indonesia, I'd argued with my Russophiles colleagues and lecturers on Russia's inevitable strategic defeat, stemming from their failure to defeat Ukraine swiftly and their PR failure in Ukraine (shelling settlements do not make the civilians there friendly, to say the least). The more protracted the war is, the bigger the chance of Ukraine to seize the initiative and therefore victory, as the war proves to be the biggest uniting factor among Ukrainians. Loss of territories does not matter, as long as they fight to live another day through guerilla warfare. Russia's eventual defeat is already on the clock, whether that or the collapse of the Russian economy comes first is up to debate. Ironic, because we Indonesians also faced the Dutch in two different invasions; they managed to overrun 92% of the country and take most of our cities, yet we still secured our independence in the end. Ukraine has proven its worth in its fight against Russia, and in spite of the loss of territories suffered, their citizens' spirit has united and created a new national identity forged through battles against the invader. My colleagues' arguments (and my lecturers') tend to focus more on shallow aspects such as manpower and airpower, but less on the logistics and morale of the Russian Armed Forces or Ukraine's willingness to give it all. The constant failure to seize air supremacy and shitshows that plague the Russian Armed Forces serve as additional proof. IMO, I'm disappointed most Indonesians are blindly supporting Russia's invasion as something that is just. Looks like most of us haven't learned from East Timor, have we? Even academics tend to romanticize Russia's war and one of which even reiterated Putin's "essay" on Ukrainian identity as fact (that certain academic is currently teaching in Indonesia's most prestigious university). Time for a change I guess. Slava Ukraine! We'll see this to the end brothers!

Speaking positively of a warmonger like Putin will essentially make you a persona non grata in politics (Though that doesn't stop some people from doing it anyway). And besides Nestle (which, honestly, who's surprised Nestle of all companies puts money over lives?), pretty much every major company has voluntarily pulled out of Russia. To say the entire operation was a shot in the foot is an understatement. Oh yeah, and getting the Green Party, founded on pacifism as a principle, to agree to rearm Germany, a country that caused two world wars, and having the Free Democrats, the most fiscally conservative party in the Bundestag, agree to the 100 billion dollar budget that entails, AND getting the Christian Democrats, a less fiscally conservative, but headstrong party (that doesn't take the young voters that majorly helped dethrone them after 16 years of Merkel seriously, and also has a bit of a God complex) approve of this step? Denmark's defeat in the 1864 war with Prussia was in many ways a blessing, it made Denmark focus on its own population and resources, rather than thinking of conquests. And after ww1 where Denmark was offered to get the lost land back, we did referendums divided into provinces, so it was only areas that would like to be Danish we got, and those that would like to be German, which were most Germany kept, it was not all countries after ww1 that were worried about large German minorities within their borders might cause problems in the future, but it probably went well, I think.......

A waning superpower/great power (depending on your perception) that gambles, loses, and is put in its new place in the world order. China doesn't (yet) seem to be taking the role of the USA in the comparison, but Russia is adding fuel to the fire of central and eastern European nationalism in a similar way to how the Suez Crisis catalyzed Arab nationalism. Lands Conquered have been conquered as long as we can trace our memories into pre-history. Its a past time and present cause of why much is lost into 'antiquity'. Lands and borders are won and lost, changed and redrawn just to keep up. The land is defined by the people living on it. Assimilating different people into a single nation only succeeds if both sides want that outcome. If one side is willing to invest and expect little benefit from the new lands until 1 or 2 generations of people are born under the new nation and aggressively educated, nationalized, and incentivized to do so. Or lastly if the people living on the lands captured aren't considered important, profits from goods and resources arent needed, and the uprisings and guerrilla attacks are considered acceptable collateral until the people die out, give up, or live in conditions bad enough to turn on their own. The only way Putin can succeed in his lifetime is by a diplomatic agreement to turn large chunks of the country into what the 38th parallel looks like today splitting Korea.

There is a cheaper, more sustainable way for Russia to secure its western border: A friendly, productive relationship with its neighbors. If there are no enemies, then Russia don't need to worry about being attacked. Ironically, all Russia's attempts to archive "national security" end up making it even more vulnerable.
@forkeke
@forkeke 2 года назад
The only problem would be that "internal security" (e.g. genocidal Chechen wars) and good relations to the west were often incompatible. A soft friendly Russia would certainly find external security in Europe, but might be a bit smaller or internally unstable. The Russians were very much against shrinking after the fall of the Soviet Union - I mean, that's all they ever talk about, still the biggest country in the world and all.
