The Russian interest rate, the Russian gold standard, and the Russian debt-to-GDP ratio are all addressed. Why is the Russian ruble and economy entering a phase of rapid decline? And why the world will be a better place after a phase of monetary reformatting of the Russian economy.

Don't you think that life in the West is too lazy. Don't you think that living in a hard society in Russia is good for you because you learn 'survival' how to survive with almost nothing. The Western people they commit suicide if they have hard conditions like is in Russia.

That’s what you always hear. Westerners are soft. But do people understand how much brain and effort is necessary to build a company instead living on the edge and drink on a daily basis? Sorry I’ve seen Russia outside of Moscow and the big cities. It’s embarrassing. But people are proud that the average Russian dies at the age of 60. Yeah what a life.

Keep up the good work. I lived in Russia in the nineties as a missionary. Your point is well taken - these Russian apologists don't invest their money in Rubles. Their money is offshore in the hated west. All the leaders and oligarchs of Russia have their money in the West. Where your treasure is, your heart shall be also. Russia's economy has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

It is a completely different economy than the 90s when the US controlled it but since 2000 you would not recognize the country. Of course we invest in Russia, I have 3 businesses, small but profitable and growing just like all the country is. It has good trade partners and is a key member of the BRICS that 40 additional countries are waiting for approval to be admitted, but even before they enter it is the largest trading pact and overtook the G7 last year.

Of course that only a tiny percentage of the Russian people go to church. The Russian church has fallen to TheDeceiver (HaSaataan). Is Satan's church now since the leader of the Russian Orthodox fake Christian church , is a notorious KGB agent "Kyiryil" / K i r i l who blessed Satan which is a blasphemy since blessings could only come from YHWH only for good and never for evil not even for a missile, and absolutely for nothing called 'satan'. The slave of TheDeceiver, K i r i l has replaced many of the priests of the church, with middle age retired KGB agents. People spy on each other and is a duty now, whether you like it or not. In February 2022, Russia did have some reserves in gold. I do believe that gold is an asset that possibly could be used. However, the first question is how much gold does Russia have possession of today. Gold sitting in New York, London or even Switzerland might not be usable during the war in Ukraine. Second, we are 2 years removed from the start of the war, so how much gold does Russia have today? We don't know, and we can't trust Russia to tell us. We do know that the Russian Central Bank has admitted selling their reserves, probably to support the value of the ruble, which I suspect has far less value on the street than it does at the government exchange rate for the dollar. And who buys anything from Russia, paying in rubles? Perhaps North Korea. Does Iran even buy Russian stuff? My guess is that they would almost be on a barter system, selling drones for fighters, or air defense systems. If Biden would just allow Ukraine to take the gloves off and hit Moscow, this war could end quickly, which should be our goal.

Use it to shore up the ruble? Back their currency? I do not think that would work, even when backed by gold the main component in any currency's value is still the faith in the government running the nation. I have no faith in Putin nor for that matter in any other leader because they have never had one that inspired faith. A dictator/war criminal? No, Yeltsin before him? You must be kidding. The Soviet leadership? Not one of them. The tsarist monarchs? Not since Peter the Great.

I like that, "take the gloves off and hit Moscow" - and all will then be sweet? Now run it by the nice Mr Pootin and see what he thinks of it as an idea. For myself I do not think it is a clever idea. In brief, I think it is NOT a good idea. But the war might indeed finish quickly ...

Russians are used to volatility in their currency and 100:1 against the US dollar is a barrier they are uncomfortable with. The Russian Central Bank raised interest rates to defend the ruble. With a tremendous reduction in foreign trade and investment in Russia, there is not much demand for the ruble, so the Central Bank action successfully kept the ruble under 100:1. Currently, it's sitting in the low-90s to a dollar.

Can you Mark explain how you see the car loan/lease bubble in the US and will it burst like the real estate bubble of '08?
@typxxilps

there is no such bubble you are talking about cause the car value is still there. And in 3 or 4 years the lease is over. Car prices are slowly going down in the USA and everywhere else .
@EconLessons
@EconLessons 2 месяца назад
Real Estate of '08 was toxic. In order for a hard fall like in '08 the assets must not be just bad or over extended, but toxic. That is some fraud behind the scenes that deceives investors like the rating agencies. I have to look into the loan/lease bubble. I pay cash for everything so not in my personal world. But it happens when something is toxic and not transparent, the markets can not gauge risk accurately and price.

If the natural rate and the bank rate are really out of wack and the Russian Bank ignoring this, it will result in a Great Depression in Russia. Not at first, but when the chest Putin saved is out in 2026. After that it will be back to the 1990s in Russia. Meaning economic collapse. High unemployment and poverty. The natural rate is the profit rate, lets say. The Bank rate is so high to prop up the Ruble artificially. No one will take a loan at 16% and earn a 5% profit. Capitalism will stop and it will be a central economy that has no foundation other than making the bad stuff.

Thanks for your comments Mark some interesting points. It’s not in Russia’s interest to it’s correct and true statistics because the news would show that sanctions are having a greater effect time otherwise believed. People say that Russia is an autocracy I think it’s more accurate to say that it is a kleptocracy. The pipes bursting and people protesting about freezing over the winter is a symptom of a greater malaise within Russia which is that despite being a huge resource rich country all the money has been centralised between Moscow and St Petersburg and the rest of the country is just meat for the grinder in Ukraine. This has always been like this for centuries and is on like this shit to change if the democratic government is elected it’s a question of mentality not just political.

To summarize lenders basically sell time when they give out loans. If their venture isn't as profitable over time as the interest rate requires, then no one takes out loans or they default or lose money. It's an indicator that the russian economy is not as smooth as the government claims. They are in trouble I think.

In west you pay 5% interest and in russia 16%. Difference is that you pay in west 5% each year so for 30 years its 150% so tripple what you have bought it for. In russia the 16% is fixed meaning that you firstly pay off 16% of the mortage then you do repayment. In western bank you pay interest and repayment together for many years while in russia you pay off interest first then do the repayment.
