RUST can destroy your RV. Here's how to fix it 👍

Step-by-Step, on how to eliminate & fix RUST on your RV or Motorhome to practically brand new.
This is an easy, cheap DIY job. When your RV or Motorhome starts to get rust, it can get out of control pretty quickly and you want to take care of it now before it gets out of control. Salted winter roads up north, parking near or on the beach, or just the age of your RV can cause rust that can really damage not only the under carriage of your RV but the salt can also have a big effect on the operation and integrity of electrical parts too, that run all along the chassis and many other places.
If you have real heavy, deep, pitted rusting on your RV then POR-15 along with more vigorous prepping, along with a top coat would be a better choice in those applications. Links are below for those products too.
What we did in this video was how to treat light rust.
It took 2 cans of Permatex Rust Treatment , 2 cans of VHT FLAMEPROOF Very high Temperature, Header Paint, Silica, Ceramic Coating (1300º-2000º) for the black areas, 1 can of Rust-Oleum Universal, Gloss White Paint & Primer in One for the water heater access door and 1 can of Rust-Oleum, Farm & Implement Ford Gray for the propane tank.

Some of the best life lessons were mechanical how to's from my dad, which allowed me to accomplish so much more of caring and improving all my physical assets. Saved me tens of thousands of dollars over the yrs. So i pass that on and give back to my family/neighbors, where ever i am in the world.

Finally! I get to know what product you used! I used that product that I showed you and it pretty much stripped off the rust, as I scraped it of course! My goal was to totally remove the rust and from what I just saw, that’s not really necessary 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ You aren’t really worried about totally removing the rust, this Permatex stuff just treats the rust and bonds to it so that it stops growing once you seal it in with your top coat of paint. Am I understanding that correctly? If so, I’m glad I watched this before tackling my other areas of concern because totally removing the rust is quite a chore and very time consuming! I think I spent about 90 minutes just doing the small areas on my steps. My hitch would have taken much longer my way! Thanks for another great video! Miss you guys and Sir Lloyd Benson says hi 👋.

This we did in this video was how to treat light rust and get it under control BEFORE it gets bad. • POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating Semi-Gloss Black (it's a brush on product) • Use this top coat for all other black chassis areas not requiring high heat protection - POR-15 Top Coat Chassis Black Spray Paint, 15 oz.

Do we use the permitex and same things you used. Or is painting it not a good idea? Or what have you seen what might have been recommended?
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 2 года назад
If it's rust just on the ball, I wouldn't worry about it. Whatever you coat it with will just wear off again as you drag that 5ver around. If anything, just take some of my lube that I use for the steps, put it on a rag and periodically wipe it on the ball.

EVERYTHING under my 2006 Alumiscape 5th wheel is heavily rusted. LP pipe, beams, you name it. How should I go about removing the rust? I am thinking about a wire brush to start with. I can send photos.
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 3 года назад
Hi Susan, Since your 5ver is heavily rusted you need to go with POR 15 and their procedures to prep, treat and final top coat. Start as soon as you can before it gets hot. It will be a dirty job but you can save your RV. Maybe finish up in the winter when it's cooler. If those LP pipes are pitted really bad you may have to consider replacing them. You'll know more once you begin to clean & prep those areas. While you're under there I would also advise to look closely at all electrical connections, leveling systems etc. Catch this rust problem now before it begins to infiltrate and decay into even more areas. "You Can Do This". 🔧 👍

Thanks for another good video,since you seem to know a lot I have a question for you. Our friend in the park has to remove his 3m clear protector of the front of his rig because of mold. They have a hard time getting it off, any ideas?
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 4 года назад
Yeah there are two types of protection products out there on motorhomes: one is a 3M product the other is called Diamond Shield. Both look great until it gets about 7 years old or so and it’s down hill from there and is a nasty, laborious job to remove yourself. Depending on his location there are companies that will come to his location and remove it . This is all they do. I watched a crew of 3 guys come out a couple of years ago to a Florida park we were at and they removed his, compounded and polished it out 6hrs. Looked fantastic afterwards. I didn’t ask my neighbor what he paid but I have heard numbers over the years like $600-$800 or so. Companies that specialize in this, know how to remove this stuff and not hurt the paint underneath. Possibly a company like this one: uglyshieldremoval.com/ Taking this off as a DIY can be done but even me, if I had a coach with this problem I’d just pay someone to do it. I had a friend remove his 3M product and this is the procedure he used: Bought a handheld clothing steamer from Bed, Bath and Beyond and plastic razor blades to get off the film. For the glue residue, Xylene from Home Depot worked the best of everything he tried. Spray on a lot to keep the area you are working on wet. 3M films are best removed with solvents and erasure wheels (both available from 3M) There are many DIY folks online that have tried this with success, some not so much using all different types of techniques. I personally have never done it and never will. Our coach doesn’t have any type of film on the front but if it did, I’d just pay someone to do it. When you get older, there are just some things that are worth paying someone else to do. They have all the know how, man power and equipment. Hope this helps. 👍

Hi Martin - Another great video. For PM on the chassis rails, leaf spring and metal cross members for the "house" construction of the RV, would you recommend the Permatex and black rust oleum for these areas as well?
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 3 года назад
No. If you have pretty good rust in those areas I'd use Por 15. More rugged and can more abuse for those areas.
@joemissyoneil8668
@joemissyoneil8668 3 года назад
Just look like surface rust. the rust inhibitor or the primer and top coat products?
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 3 года назад
@@joemissyoneil8668 Well, you can try the Permatex inhibitor and Rustoleum top coat and see how it goes. But because it's on the chassis it will take a bigger beating than the areas I treated. That's why I suggested POR15 in your case. That's my opinion. I'm sure you'll make the right call.

I have a converted toy hauler. It is probably around 8 years old. I will definitely be doing this for the frame this winter, there is surface rust on it. Before I bought it, the previous owners used bleach on the white aluminum because it had green algae. The aluminum is streaky. How do I remove the oxidation and what do I use to protect the finish. The products I find list fiberglass or vehicles. The aluminum products I find are for tire rims or pontoons.

The whole trailer has aluminum skin, not fiberglass. It is white aluminum like the work trailers.
