I’m repairing the rusty wheel arch on my 2005 Silverado using a patch panel from keystone. It’s a great piece that’s well built and made from very thick metal so it’s a breeze to weld.
I’ve had some people ask for my address to send along something, so I thought I’d leave my address here incase you’d like to! I appreciate you guys.

Great job Barry! I need to get brave enough to tackle some body work, got at least 3 Chevy/GMC trucks in the Lowbuck family that need some rust repairs. My dad was a body man but that gene didn’t get passed down to me…

Hey Randy I appreciate it 🙂 I still have to do cab corners and rockers on the truck yet, we’ll see how that goes. I suck at body work haha can’t wait until I get the the fibreglass 🤣

Yeah there’s absolutely going to be a next time!! Cheap 🔌 in belt sander/ belt grinder works amazingly on spot welds, not completely bead welded all the way around but just 1k small beads all over like a torque sequence. If you can afford all the “PPE” then you can get a couple things like weld primer sealer of some kind & future you is going to want a full bedside over a patch panel because it is absolutely going to rust out again just the way she go’s guy..

Yeah man, I’d love to go further south and drag home a rust free bed. I’m learning as I go with the body metal work, not used to it yet. I need to learn a lot yet, I’m afraid I’ll have a few panels rust out before that lol

The flash!, the helmet I use got a grinding mode, you hit a switch and it doesn't auto darken. The number of times I turn that on then forget to turn it off and flash myself is just stupid...

Hahahhaa I feel that, I stopped using grind mode for that reason

The best way to do these panels is to fit it like you did and use self tapping screws then use a grinder to cut through the old and new and this way you have clean edges that match up. This way you aren't welding excessive amounts of metal together. And whoever said to weld this directly on top is not a body guy and a hack. The reason I say "hack" for is because in your case you welded metal directly onto metal and this is where moisture and rust will happen again. Before any of that metal was welded a weld through primer should be used. The only downside is HUGE seams to weld but if you use an air compressor you can help keep the metal cool Also rent/buy a bottle.. gas welding is much cleaner.

Lots of good info here. I actually did the first thing you said on the tail light sections, (future video) and it works awesome. Instead of self tappers I just put a couple tacks around the panel and then cut and flushed the panel in, same result. It’s a much slower process but is very nice looking in the end, I did also use an air compressor to cool the metal after every weld. Yeah I use flux core, I agree that it’s way cleaner but also a lot more expensive, and I have basically zero budget so it’s just a cost that I can’t justify while flux core works fine.

The tacks don’t need to be a few then smoke break then a few more welds you just give a few seconds pause between welds, the final wipe didn’t help anything but yourself, its not a titanium exhaust.😂 it’s not too bad for what it is though!!!

Not nearly enough welds!!

I’m not sure if I corrected myself in the video or not but I ended up fully welding the entire panel after, I’m glad I did
