I have several comments. First, wiring the panel directly to the battery will pull the panel operating voltage down to the battery voltage. A 50 watt nominal 12 volt panel actually operates at at about 18.5 volts in full sun where it will produce 2.7 amps. Connecting it directly to the battery will pull the voltage down to around 13 volts max, so the power you will get out will never be more than 13v x 2.7a = 35 watts. Second, a 50 watt panel is too big to directly connect to a less than 100 amp-hr battery like you have (looks like a GRP 24). The panel will NOT self regulate no matter what the manufacturer says. In a sunny place like Texas that panel WILL overcharge your battery in the summer. The only possible saving grace is that applying the panel directly to the roof like that will cause the panel to run very hot. That will decrease its output dramatically AND will greatly reduce the panel's life relative to a mount with air flow under the panel to keep it cool. You made a big deal about preventing leaks, but didn't use any sealant on the wire mounting screws you put into the side of the trailer. You could have bought a high quality monocrystalline rigid 50 watt panel, an MPPT controller, mounting brackets and some 3M VHB tape or eternabond tape and made a much better install for under $200.

Would that 50 watt panel be able to charge stuff like Dewalt batteries , run compressor ect ??
@todddunn945
@todddunn945 3 года назад
@@chicothesavage ha, ha, ha. Of course the answer is yes IF the panel is connected to a big enough battery bank and has a big enough inverter. It just might take a LONG time to recharge the battery bank after running the compressor. The DeWalt batteries not so much (say an hour or so of full sun for a 2 amp battery, but you will still need an inverter.

...or, for less than half the cost ($159 all-in), you can get a comparable solar panel (12VDC, 50W, flexible) and a capable MPPT charge controller (lead acid chemistry). The wiring is just as simple, yet you have so many additional options for expansion, etc. As for this installation, a) a waterproof entry gland is cheap insurance against leaks, b) the Dicor lap sealant is way over kill, and c) the efficiency of these cells will be comprised as they heat up for to lack of air flow underneath them. Still not requiring roof penetrations, I'd affix low profile aluminum channel to the roof, then mount flexible panels to a thin rigid plastic substrate and the substrate to the channel; all with VHB tape. The channel allows air flow under panel(s), minimizing efficiency reductions from panel heating. A length-wise orientation would minimize wind resistance, but could induce some lift during transit, while a width-wise orientation would result in slightly more wind resistance without lift. In short, affixing any solar panel directly to a structure without adequate air flow will reduce their efficiency while simultaneously shortening their life.

GREAT idea on the drip loop. This is not meant as a backhanded compliment or snide remarks; but I spent 2 years on & off researching Solar prior to the installation on my tt last year. I was going to go the flexible panel route (and not the cheap ones) until almost everyone who had a year prior had major failures. A lot of them documented on You Tube. This was regardless of supplier. A local solar supplier quit stocking them about a month prior to me trying to place an order from him. He had had too many customers return them with failures. I ended with a small (glass) system to tide me over hoping quality & technology will catch up. I’ll be real curious to see a follow up in about 6-12 months on yours. I wonder if the price of these is representative of a “cure” with the problems they use to have ? And no charge controller ? Although you’ll be lucky to average more than about 1-2 amps per hour, how do you prevent over charging?

Well here is the million dollar question........how is it performing after over a year??
@Erin-Thor
@Erin-Thor 5 лет назад
I was always told that bracket mounted solar was MUCH better (superior) than surface or flush mount solar panels. The reason was cooling, the heat has to go somewhere. If there’s a gap between the panel and the roof, the heat has a place to go - No gap, the heat transfers to your vehicle through the roof. Also that if there is any flexion in the lightweight flexible panels, it’s all still glass. The solar cells crack, that cell on the panel is toast, and gradually over time as more and more cells crack, you lose output. This doesn’t happen as often on framed, raised solar panels. Is this true or false?

Should have drilled through the roof, then sealed the hole with 3M 5200. It will never come off crack or leak and will outlast that trailer. The hole shoild have also been within a 1/4 of where wire exited the panel and completely cover the wire with 5200. The way you have it one tree limb rubbing the rail will destroy that wire. Also, is that wire fused at the battery?

Did you put a grommet in the hole where the wire penetrates the trailer wall? Curious to see how this pans out long term. I’m not familiar with solar enough to understand where power goes when the battery is fully charged.

Why not just run it down the outside in the front. No holes drilled??????

Would it be a bad idea to install Plexi over top of this solar panel?

Looks like they don't sell it anymore? Do you still have it any updates? Does it work as advertised?

What is the battery running? If solar is just to keep battery 🔋 topped off, wouldn’t the smaller one 8-10 watts that is on the Reese keep this one topped off too. Just wondering what the need for 50 watts is. Don’t remember a video showing what you use that trailer for.

Mike, you must not have watched this channel very long LOL. Knowing JD, before long he will have 10 new accessories on this trailer drawing power.

Just last night a girl at my sons work fell off a 4ft ladder, hit the corner of a sink and broke several ribs. It can happen for sure. As for this kit, do you need a charge controller to prevent over charging?

no, it is only a 32 cell panel. I strongly prefer a 36 cell panel with an inexpensive charge controller. 36 cells will do a far better job, especially on hot summer days. Even just half a volt more from a 33 cell panel gives you just that little bit of margin when heat starts dropping the output. You can get a renogy 50watt starter kit for about $120, or a 100watt kit for $150-175.
