One of the things I like to do before I put my R-Pod 179 into storage for the season, is to do a thorough exterior detailing. In this episode, I share the steps I take to complete this process.

I’d like to see this too John. Inspecting caulk, removing or resealing, etc How long does it typically last? I’ve already had one small leak that I’ve recaulked so I am a little nervous about leaks.

I'm a lazy guy when it comes to polishing and I found an amazing product called Turtlewax ICE liquid wax (also makes a cream) that can be used to protect all surfaces (glass, plastic, rubber, even glass) and because it's clear polymer it leaves no residue. I can wax the whole Rpod in less than an hour! I've used it on my Infiniti G37 that's 11 years old now and people say the finish still looks new.

Mike, thanks again for another recommendation! The whole R-Pod in less than an hour sounds like a great time saver. I'll have to look into it. Thanks again!

Hi John. Very informative video. I see on your amazon store you recommend two types of sealant. Would you use the roof one for all around the Sides of the prod where the caulking is looking like it needs touch up? Would love to see a video of how you do caulking touch ups. We just got our first used rpod after watching your videos! Thanks!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment and question. I do plan to do such a video. The caulk for the seals would be the Geocel 28100V Pro Flex Crystal Clear RV Flexible Sealant - 10 oz. You can get it in white (281101V) to match better if desired. I would recommend looking up a video on applying it or reading the product reviews on Amazon. Glad the videos are helpful and that you were able to get the R-Pod out. All the best!

John you are great help, specially for single female 179 2018 pod owner. Your videos are pure gold! I just had a rubber finish that goes around edges where roof and sides meet cracked and blew out of grove during my drive back from Traverse City. I had to cut off length so not to flap on road but I left few inches attached still. I am looking for product specification and replacement instruction. Can you please direct me to the good source? TIA Ana

Ana, I think you may be talking about the vinyl trim insert along the railing. If so, I do have a video on the subject on how to replace it and the video description has the link to the product required. Thanks! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Jp1Fv0GVBA.html

I love your videos. My husband and I just purchased a 2019 180 and since my husband is physically unable to do much, most of the maintenance of our R-pod will fall to me or dealer service. So I have a quick question, when you detail and polish your R-Pod, do you use the polish on the black molding around the door and windows and on the Air Conditioner cover? Thanks, Helen
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 5 лет назад
Helen, we only use the Nu Finish polish on the fiberglass and not on the molding or A/C unit. Thanks!

What do you use (if anything) to clean the edges of your decals? Several of ours have a dirty black edge that soap doesn't get rid of. Thanks.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 5 лет назад
George, no special answer for you. We use Dawn and gob it on most seals, but the decal edges are a different story. We clean them the best we can, but they are not perfect. Thanks for watching and for the question.

John, any tips for renewing the black finish on the exterior frames around the door and windows? On my 2017 RP-179 the frames are getting a white chalky appearance that doesn't just wash off with car wash detergent.

Kurt, were looking into it as I have some serious fading on my door frame black plastic. I need to research some compounds to try. If you find something that works, please let me know!

@@JohnMarucci I think the door frame is metal on my 179, maybe steel or anodized aluminum. I'll let you know if I find a treatment!

Do you have any recommendations for a soap to remove heavy soil from the roof? Our “new to us” 179 looks like maybe it was never washed on the roof.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 3 года назад
I usually use car wash soap with a long-handled brush to start. If after this, the roof still looks faded, I then use Meguiar's Oxidation Remover (amzn.to/347uw2a). Then either NuFinish (amzn.to/34on3vR) or Meguiar's Premium Marine (fiberglass) Wax (amzn.to/2Sbz81s). It isn't cheap and it is a lot of manual labor to do this, but the results are excellent. Thanks!

John, any suggestions for waxing the areas on the top that I can’t reach by hand?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 3 года назад
Tim, I use a 10' ladder and stretch a bit, but there are still some areas in the middle of the Fiberglass roof on my R-Pod 179 that are very difficult to reach. Better to be safe and leave a bit untreated than sorry when using a ladder. Thanks!

John, thanks! I’ve been doin just that. And on the places I can reach I use this on the areas I can’t reach: Turtle Wax 50834 1-Step Wax & Dry-26 oz. Double Pack with Microfiber Towel, 52. Fluid_Ounces, 2 Pack smile.amazon.com/dp/B075XSPYWW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_Z1ZJS0ECR0GB2K22QHDW

When you touched up the caulking, what did you use to do it?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 3 года назад
We were fortunate that while at the factory for some warranty work they gave us the actual colored caulk that was used for the trailer to touch up any cracked areas. Generally, there are three types of caulk recommended - Dicor self-leveling lap sealant, Dicor non-sag roof lap sealant, and Proflex RV clear sealant. They have different uses and all three of these are in the RV Maintenance section of my Amazon store of you want to learn more: www.amazon.com/shop/johnmarucci

Hi John - great info! Just wondering what your take is regarding physically getting on the roof of the R-Pod (in my case a 2021 190)? Forest River says "do not" but I am wondering if that is for liability reasons. The reason I 'might' get up there is service the AC, check seals, etc. Thanks!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 2 года назад
You really don’t want to walk on the roof of the R-Pod if at all possible. However, if you do have to get up on the roof, you may want to lay a sheet of plywood or something similar across the roof to distribute your weight and I personally would only crawl up there and not stand when working and moving.

Hey John! We have a 2018 rpod 190 and just took it to a service company for an inspection for the beginning of the year. They recommended having our bearings repacked, which we did but they are also recommending doing a complete roof reseal for just under $2000. We don’t know much about what we’re doing, but trying to learn!!! Does this seem reasonable? Thank you so much!!!!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 3 года назад
That seems steep unless they are talking about fully removing all caulk and replacing it around every fixture (fan vents, A/C, etc.) on the roof and all seams. Make sure you know in detail what they would be doing. I would get another quote from a local RV dealer. It is a labor intensive job, but not terribly complicated. As a point of reference, my 2017 hasn't had any roof work done and it sits in outdoor storage. Thanks!

John, I am living full time in my 171(I bought when I saw yours) in a SC state park. I am retired military and waiting for a hearing so I have to hang out for awhile. I just used NuFinish today. The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't give a high gloss even finish. It's kind of blotchy. But it's protecting until I can do better. Another problem I'm having is a small leak inside with the AC. A friend said I need to take the inside cover off and tighten 4 screws that hold the AC on. Do you have any experience with this, or a video? Thanks again.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 5 лет назад
Richard, I’ve always had good results with Nu Finish, but I only apply in small sections at a time. I also apply to the surface when it isn’t hot or under direct sunlight. As far as the A/C leak, I haven’t had this issue but have read where people have had issues where the AC wasn’t tightened down properly. You may also want to post about the A/C leak on the R-Pod Owners forum: www.rpod-owners.com. All the best!

We just bought an RPod and I notice that the clear coat on the roof is worn off. Any suggestions as to get that shine to it again? Will it need a new clear coat or just use Nu Finish?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 4 года назад
I would try the Nu Finish and some elbow grease first to see if it will bring the shine back to the fiberglass. You will need a good strong ladder and please don't try this unless you are very comfortable on a ladder. Otherwise, if the Nu Finish doesn't work, you will need a fiberglass oxidation remover. Hope this helps!

Hello John, would you recommend buyin Rpod 2016 179, or should I look somewhere else, thank you.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 3 года назад
Very much depends on how you plan to camp. I like my 2017 179 and have enjoyed it very much over the years. It is nice to have a good-sized kitchen counter and plenty of interior space, however, it does have a wet bath, so you will want to be okay with this. If you want a full dry-bath, you should look at other models. Thanks!

Is it ok to use a clay bar on this finish?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 5 лет назад
Peter, I haven’t used a clay bar on any of my vehicles, including the R-Pod. My limited understanding is that it is a good way to remove surface contamination from the finish of cars. I would do some research on using it on RV fiberglass. Thanks for watching!

Hi John I am having an issue with my 2013 R Pod 178 I purchased it new and have taken it on a cross country trip from Windsor Ontario and also to Florida with no towing issues I have replaced the tires and brakes and have had the wheel bearings professionally re packed The issue I am having is the sagging floor, the R pod has been stored outside and there do not appear to be leaks, however there may have been a plumbing leak from day one that I discovered last summer in yellowstone. There appears to be moisture between the vinyl floor and the substrate and I am planning to remove the dinette and peal the floor back to undertake a repair I have also added angle iron to the frame where accessible under the trailer Have you ever heard of this problem and can you suggest a possible repair method Like your posts Steve Oldcastle Ontario
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 5 лет назад
Steve, sorry to hear that you are having issues with your R-Pod’s floor. Moisture and flooring is not a good combination! While I have not personally heard of this issue, my suggestion would be to post the issue on the R-Pod Owners Forum (www.rpod-owners.com/). Some of the people on the forum have been very helpful and are long-term R-Pod owners. All the best to you in finding a good solution. Thanks for watching!
