With all our travels and dry camping/boondocking, we have been using our generator quite a bit. Here is a how-to on changing the oil on an RV ready generator.

Thanks. I have a similar generator and this video was super helpful. Also, they did tighten that bad boy down.

Very helpful thank you! You were exactly right the drain plug is so tight that I thought I must be the wrong bolt! Thanks to you got it done! Someone needs to inform the manufacturer!

I just setup our dual fuel 3400 Champion yesterday, and they have added a tube on that drain plug you were struggling with. The black tube goes upward and attaches to another part of the motor with a simple spring clip. You undo the clip and point the hose down, and it drains the fluid easily. No tools, no struggle.

Dude I have the same generator. Mine came with a flexible hose where the oil plug is on yours and attaches to a stand off bolted to the engine. So much easier. This must have been an afterthought from champion.after they manufactured yours. I’d contact them and see if they will send you one. They may for free. Just a thought. You will be much happier changing the oil. You literally loosen the clamp on the standoff connected to the bolt, pull the hose off and drain it into a container. Then you stick it back onto the standoff slide the clamp back up into place. Your done. If you watch other videos you will see what I’m talking about

Hey Brian, Thanks for letting us know. We will contact Champion and see if we can get it. 🙂

Thanks, very simple and informative. Much rather watch than read a manual. It has been a great generator for the two years I have had to use it when PG&E has cut our power for days at a time.

Just curious. What model and BTU is your AC? Have you run it on propane and how did it handle the load on propane and gas? Thanks for the video
@WalkAndPaddle
@WalkAndPaddle 5 лет назад
13,500BTU It runs much better on gas, but it is nice having the option of propane

Hi can you make a video on what to do if the generator won't start after a long period of no use?
@WalkAndPaddle
@WalkAndPaddle 5 лет назад
Juan, Hmm...we don't really have experience with that. I did find this article when I did a quick search: generatorgrid.com/blog/wont-start/ Hope it helps!!

I was kind of psyched, thinking perfect, I'm at 60 hours and will need to do this eventually. As soon as you got to a socket wrench or whatever that was, I realized I'm just going to pay someone to do it. 😀 (I'm boondocking right now, I've emptied the tank four or five times now, I figured out how to fix a lot of little things that have gone wrong, but it's 94 degrees here in to Grand Junction Colorado, and I had to turn on the generator and air conditioning because my cat was giving me the evil eye, and I am just going to pay someone to change the generator oil. 😒
@WalkAndPaddle
@WalkAndPaddle 7 лет назад
+Julie Burgess oh no!!! It's just 1 ratchet, 1 12mm socket, and an extension! So long as you have those 3 and place for the oil to drain you'll be ok! My only difficulties were the first time when the bolt was on so tight. And the problem was that I didn't have the right extension! :) :) But if not, yep get help and you will be rocking and rolling!

Exploring the Local Life Nothin' fancy, a tabby :-) Don't mind me, Robert. I set out with my very first RV from Florida to California and now heading back east, and it's been almost a month, and it's been a blast, but I'm now starting to see how the vacation does end LOL. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, although there have been so many of those! But it's finally hitting home that the rving life, as you guys have said in the past, is not Nirvana LOL. although I feel very accomplished now and have no plans to give it up. Anyway, thanks for all your videos. it is very helpful to see reality rv videos.

We have a tabby and torti! :) You are very welcome for the videos. Yep, RV life is great, but it is real life. Stuff goes perfectly on some days, but not others. :)

If you ever do that again and have an extremely tight bolt it is best to utilize a breaker bar. That will save your ratchet driver.

How much of oil you add?
@WalkAndPaddle

None between oil changes. Then whatever the maintenance instructions call for. I don't recall exactly how much, but definitely not more than one standard bottle. Thanks!

Used motor oil is a carcinogen. Also, it stinks and gets your fingernails all grimey.
