RV Generators and what we learned 

I'm going to have to look into the kit. I just pulled out the generators for their quarterly run and they are tough to move around. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm gonna use it. I spent most of my life single - I was married for a while then my wife took fight since I was offshore a lot - When they started sending women offshore we found they couldn't handle the hard physical work every day as the guys did - It was things like a sledge hammer - half of the energy of swing a sledge hammer Is holding on to the hammer - We learned women can swing a hammer just like guys the first day - but many could swing the hammer the second day but could not hold on to the hammer - The sledge hammer would fly out there hands the second day they didn't have the strength to old the handle tight enough - We found that it was better to place them in administrative work - the old guys that grew up on farms said it was there mother's and sisters that handled the books of the farm not the husband or son's - In the end we found ways to move them off the floor and into administration - there mind works differently and they can see every thing happening at on time - were as men focus on one thing at a time - There interesting things we learned about women - if they said something is burning - some guys ignored what they said because they didn't smell anything - Suddenly there was an alarm that something was burning up or on fire - every thing in the oilfields becomes data that we rely on and down load into the systems or computers - If a women said she could hear a strange sound we found we better start looking to see what was making that strange sound we could not here as men - It might just be a cylinder missing out on a generator so out of 3 generators with 20 cylinders each they could hear one out of 60 cylinders missing out - Men can't hear that well compared to women - I had mentioned the notice details we don't see - I'm not sure if I'm correct on this but I think they can see up to 100 shades of colors - we might see the color red and that's it - but from what I remember reading is they can tell very sight differences in the shades of red - That is very important on know when to harvest certain crops - farmer would rely on there wives and daughters to know when it was time to harvest crops - Women have a far better 6th sense then men also - On a platform if they said something wasn't right you better start looking around to see what was ready to.blow - Most of the time they were right - I've been through 4 blow outs in the 70s so I listened to them when they said something is not right. - In the 70s my mother was terrified every time I left to go offshore it was that 6th sense - she felt the danger although I lied and said there was nothing to worry about - I had two aunts and a grandmother that kept saying the we're praying for my safety - I'm so glad of that I was totally unscathed or unharmed through those blow outs - I was even on a chopper that lost both engines for a few seconds - one engine fired up and we made it to land - In the end your wife will feel, see, hear, smell, things that you will never pay mind to -

Before Hurricane Ida hit I was curious about an RV generator for long distance travel (BLM camp sites). Well, now I know, the little Honda will be fine as long as I don't need an A/C. Just did a camping trip with my son he had a super quiet predator, got it on sale for 600.00 normally around 800 I’ll probably get that for the camper, really nice unit for the money

@@RetroRVRecon can't stand this ethanol fuel. I have 3 generators that need car work. A Generac 2000, the Honda 3000 (I wish it was the 3200 efi) and a 12,000w that the float stuck.

@@78cobra I don't like it either. We have several locations around here that offer non-ethanol fuel. I try not to run ethanol or added ethanol through the smaller engines that sit for a while. Its a pain when you're ready to use something then figure out the fuel has gum'd up to carburetor.😒 Mike

Hey Rory. Thank you. I haven't actually heard (no pun intended😄) any of the Champion Inverter generators yet. I bet the 4250 is great for around the house for a power outage (hurricane). Around here in the Deep South we all need to be very mindful of what works more than what is quiet.😁 Talking to friends and reading replies to this video, a lot of folks like the Champion brand generators, including me. Hey Dan. I'm glad you asked! There are several reasons but I think what you and I are looking for is, they...(from the internet) "Have a noise-reducing design. Inverter generators are built with features to reduce noise, such as enclosed casings and mufflers. " I think your second question could have to do with cost. My Honda 2000 watt will run my 12000 btu window ac with no problem. The ac units in most campers must not be very efficient. Tag on my ac says 11 amps needed to run.

I have the Predator 2200 and it runs my TT a/c all day long. If I need to use the microwave, I just turn the a/c off for the short time of use, then turn the a/c back on.

I've heard a lot of good things about Champion generators, they're a bit loud but they're very reliable. I'll have to try the plywood.👍 Thanks Mark for watching and commenting. Mike and Angel.

Hey Margaret. No, not really. We only use the generator in a well ventilated area, being sure the generator exhaust is drifting away from the camper. We also have a multi gas sensor in the camper that will let us know if there area any gases in the camper. Yes, that's a good option too. I heard I can use the 3000 with the 2200. I need to do some research. The two smaller 2200 would be much easier to toss in the back of the truck than the 3000. @@RetroRVRecon I installed a MicroAir Easy Start 364 on my 15K BTU air conditioner and my Honda eu2200 Companion handles it just fine along with lights and television. Run the fridge and water heater on propane and you’re set. I turn the AC off if I need to use the microwave and turn it back on when I'm finished. I have an older Honda eu2000i that I can parallel with the 2200 Companion if needed but found that the 2200 Companion handles everything just fine on it's own. The 2200 is a lot easier to move around than that 130# eu3000i. Happy camping and I'm glad to see you have plenty of backup generator power.

Hey Diver I think the idea is great! Our generators aren't set up for it though.😏 At the time of the purchase we were just happy to get that Honda 3000 generator (right after hurricane Ida). Hey Able Wow, thanks for the information. I like and use Hunter fans although I have to say, not because of they have a polyphase motor design. For me they are simply reliable fans 😁. In emergency situations, no utility power, my wife and I are quite comfortable with a fan blowing, the RV is a treat. I'll send you more info on all this a little latter on - I was a senior SCR electrician and systems tech in the offshore oil & gas industry for yrs - so I know about power generation and consumption - also my grand father was an early 1900s electrician and many of my uncle's were early electricians and radio tech's - so I have a few generations of electrical knowledge -

Because of the weather I'll have to send short text I'll live in a rural area - so at times the phone will not send longer text during bad weather

Were I'm at power was still very expensive in the 1980s - in city's they might have been paying 3 or 4 cents per kilowatt - Were I live at we were paying 12 to 15 cents a kilowatt in the 1980s - back then few out here in the woods used air conditioning - most bought ceiling and window fans with shaded pole motors - also they had frost free refrigerators - - - those on social security only received $275 a month & many only made $100 a week - Just using a frost free fridges and fans they often had $150 electric bills each month during the summer - In my case I used an old fridge made in 1939 with a polyphase compressor - my water pump had a polyphase motor driving an older piston pump - all my fans had polyphase motors - So I was using the same amount of power as a house in the country used in the 1930s I guess - My electric bill was never over $30 a month during summer - the difference was using polyphase motors for my fans and a older fridge - the old fridges and freezers were built for ambient temperatures of 125° and a run time of 30% at higher out side temperatures - Also every yr my neighbors had to replace some of there fans - in 42 yrs I've had one table top fan motor rewound at a motor rewind shop -

This is working my brain lol - With the inverter generators 50% load is 50% of there rated load - so if the full load is 3600 watts 50% load is 1800 watts - from what I've seen most deliver from 6 to 7000 watts per gallon of gasoline burned at 50% load - that would be 6:1 efficency on gasoline - Inverter generators run at around 2700 RPMs so there is more time to completely burn the fuel per stroke - There is a down side with inverter generators - if your running above 70% there rated full rated load there less efficient than the standard 3600 RPM generator - at 70% they might run at 4000 RPMs but after that point they can run at 5000 RPMs and up - There efficiency will drop to as low as 1.5:1 that means. There generating 1500 watts to 1 gallon of gasoline burned - in that case ether add a second Honda and phase them together - or just use the champion during heavy electrical loads - Every thing I shared is with a single cylinder air cooled engine - In the oilfields some generators have 20 cylinder engines - the more the cylinders the cleaner the power is but they burn a lot more fuel because of all the friction from all the cylinders -

What did you do in the end?

@@swhiting100 Nothing. We just live without the a/c when we get sites without electric. I considered getting a soft start capacitor for the camper to ease the load when the a/c starts up but even then the 2200 is probably a little too small anyway. I looked at the EU3200 but to be honest if I do get another generator then I'd likely get the Generac 3500. They seem to get some amazing reviews for a fraction of the cost.

In National parks Camp grounds that allow generators you can’t use an open frame generator. I’ve see people do it. But, if someone complains Park Rangers will make you turn it off.

Hey Tom Solar is an awesome option. However, for this video we were in the aftermath of a hurricane. Solar would have been great but the generator was the most convenient solution at the time. lol😁, she knows, Its an inside joke between us. Yes, we ran the TV without any issues using the Champion but I don't really trust the champion with any major electronics since it doesn't have an inverter. Hi Tom Thanks for watching our video we really appreciate the support. And, thanks for mentioning the tri-fuel generator. Not everyone knows you can power a tri-fuel generator with gasoline, propane or natural gas. In the aftermath of a hurricane when power is out for miles and gasoline lines are hundreds of feet long it’s a good piece of advice to go ahead and purchase one before you need it. However, for the sake of this video a portable tri-fuel generator will more than likely still produce high dBs (like the one in our video) and not be a welcome piece of machinery while camping. The Champion 8000-Watt portable tri-fuel will produce 74dB whereas the Honda EU3000iS will produce only 57dB. The tri-fuel doesn’t have an inverter so it could also cause damage to sensitive RV related electronics. I will say that the Tri-fuel is the better choice at home for emergencies if you need more watts but, when out dry docking in a national forest hoping to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, a loud and noisy generator will certainly ruin the experience for others. Also, as an update… I recently ran all three generators from the video. All three still start relatively quickly (Of course the EU3000 is a key start) and still produce the expected output. Honda EU3000 = approx.. $2500.00 (54dB) Tri-Fuel Champion = approx. $1300.00 (74dB) Honda 2200 = approx.$1200.00 (50dB) Champion 4500 = approx. $420.00 (70dB) Thanks again Tom for your support and your contribution to this video, we are a community of campers.😀 Happy Trails & Happy Camping Mike and Angel

Hey Jim, you're absolutely right! Fortunately for us we were able to upgrade to the Honda inverter generator (3000) just a day or so after hurricane Ida. Knowing the power would be out for several weeks the thought of sleeping in a small camper with a roaring contractor grade generator would have added more stress to what was already a stressful situation. Had I known months before how quiet the Hondas are compared to the contractor grade Champion I would have purchased only one generator. Not everyone can afford a Mercedes, so its nice to know a VW will do the job. Thank Jim for watching our video! Mike and Angel

We got the 3000 to use for our camper at home since hurricane Ida knocked out power in the area. Two of the 2000 would be ideal if we were to travel to remote areas. Hey Chat, I almost did. I thought I ran both Hondas a few months ago but I must have forgot to run the 3000. I could smell the fuel (bad) so I had to drain it out. It seems to run *ok* but I'll probably have the carb rebuilt (lesson learned). My 2200 runs fine. Thanks for mentioning the fuel tip, thats a great idea to either empty it our of run it regularly. @@RetroRVRecon I recently learned from a repair video (Taryl Dactyl) that since the rope (manual) start is so difficult to pull, it is a faulty inverter, an $800 part! The faulty inverter puts a load on the starter and that's how you can tell. I only used that generator for a couple hours so very dissappointed in Honda.

Strange because my EU2200i will not even start my 13.5k air conditioner.

Hi Jim That is strange. I ran our Retro's A/C with the EU2200i for about five minutes. I haven't actually needed to use the EU2200i for our Retro's A/C for any length of time but it did run. The specs would suggest it won't run our A/C, that's why I bought the 3000. Thanks Jim for watching our video and for the comment.🙂👍 Mike and Angel.

@@RetroRVRecon I wonder if adding a micro air or soft start to the A/C would work. I've never considered it because my A/C runs on the Onan 2800. Since I have a 2200I companion that has the 30 amp plug I might need to do a test run and see if that will power my A/C which is the Coleman Mach something but draws 1500 watts. Should be able to hand the surge since it is rated to 2200 watt and 1800 of running capacity.

Hey Steve Thanks for the kind words. I haven't modified the A/C in the camper at all. I would suggest checking the A/C power requirement (if you haven't already checked). The 189R A/C pulls right at 3000W at start up (maxing out the Honda) but uses less than 2000 to stay running. We don't use much at all in the camper while using the A/C but then again, that was just during the time we were without power at home. This is what I would try. I would... -Run the generator with ECO switch "OFF" -Set the A/C thermostat to its warmest setting -Turn switch (fan speed) to low cool ...Once the Generator has caught up I would... -turn the thermostat to its coolest setting. The fan motor has a hefty inrush of amps but drops off after a few seconds. I hope this information helps. If it does or doesn't would you let me know? Hey Jaco. The price difference is about $1000.00 You might find the 2200 for about $1000 and the 3000 for about $2000. Check around, they have deals all the time at different stores. But 3200 has 200 less watts and a tiny tank. Some will take a trade off with fuel capacity, electric start vs true portability.

@@RetroRVRecon understandable. Well, from watching the video you will be happy with the 2 ue2200is together. Most of the time you will be at half load or less, good for noise levels and fuel efficiency. Also only running 1 gen certain times.
