Looks like the dog had a good time, she didn't seem at all bothered by the weather. What the hikers from last night fail to realize, is that the professionals that come to rescue them are also putting their own safety in danger in order to help. Yes it's their job, and they are better trained to handle it than the public is, but it wasn't the smartest thing. Just have a look online and see who has pictures posted of the volcano last night - then search & rescue can send them the bill for services rendered. Thanks( from Canada ) for keeping us updated. It's pretty cool to watch.
@claudineb777
@claudineb777 3 года назад
Agreed. They are hired to help for unforeseen situation not for stupidity. They should be charged for the time of the rescuers.
@Elmithian
@Elmithian 3 года назад
Actually, majority of those trained rescuers? Volunteers. They go through *lot* of training, but most of them aren't getting paid for doing this. There are some staff that are paid, but most of the people you see going to your rescue in Iceland? People that willingly volunteered to do this (well, beside the police and medical professionals, whom lot are also part of this volunteering unit), knowing they might be risking themselves in the process. Thankfully almost all companies in the country understand when someone that is in Landsbjörg (also known as "Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue") might have to jump away to partake in these kind of things and lets them go without issues or risks to their job. There are currently around 10.000 volunteer members (with around 3000 ready to act 24/7). Though now I am just parroting the numbers on the wiki rather than my native knowledge. ^_^, Interestingly enough, the Association is not government funded, but operates on donations, largely donations from the public, but lot of companies here also donate a fair share to them.

@johnzuijdveld9585 3 года назад
Yes these days I think ppl. have an attitude and expectation that they can do what they want no matter their experience level OR their age 65-&0 IS NOT 35! when rescuers are needed to help/save stupid, irresponsible ppl. then those ppl. SHOULD be made to pay at least a good portion of the costs. DEFINATELY . . get personal insurance if you want to be reckless!

Good luck with tomorrow’s hike out to the volcano - hopefully the weather will cooperate and let you get close (I’m still feeling guilty for telling you how nice the weather looked a couple of weeks ago; since then it hadn’t stopped being horrible!) Things look much calmer at the volcano right now, with only the tallest spatter cone (Polly Peak as I like to think of it) being very active. It is so much taller than when you visited it on Saturday! Be careful around the cone, spatter cones collapse easily, or they sometimes burst through the side - and we don’t want to lose you; your newscasts are the only thing keeping me sane!

She's stayed right there with him as he moved along the trail...carrying her ball all the time!, comically running forward a little, then stopping, wagging her tail while looking at him for his approval, and perhaps a few kind words, and an invite to have him toss her ball, too. What a great dog she is! I nominate Molly as the Official Grapevine Volcano News Dog! Now where can all the world send her dog toys at? I can remember decades ago, when they diverted a lava flow which was heading to one of their biggest cities, with water from fire hoses. At least, I think that was in Iceland, but it was a long time ago, even before cable TV, much less the internet, cell phones, or personal computers.

It was in Iceland, the volcano was in the 70’s I think, they saved a village and a harbour by dousing a very large eruption with sea water. The first time it was done was in Sicily I think on Mount Etna, in the 40’s or 50’s. It was successful and the harbour was saved. It’s actually on RU-vid, you’ll find it by my description!

Hiking in Iceland looks like hiking in the Colorado mountains; you need to plan for any kind of weather, take food, take plenty of water, perhaps something to use for shelter (a couple of safety blankets are light enough), dress for the weather AND the terrain (boots, jackets, have some gloves...may not need the jacket or gloves, but it's better to have them and NOT need them). Hello Valur/Polly! :) I love your broadcasts so informative, I've been watching the livestream show of the volcano and was wondering if you could Ans. my Q.. . .as the plates under Iceland are separating, it's said that Iceland is being torn apart, I assume producing more than 1 island, but why wouldn't the gap immediately be filled with new magma upwellings making Iceland bigger? Same in the case of the African rift valley. Another said that if the magma outflow was over a certain amount, then Iceland would be pushed further northwards. Again thanks for the news AND the tours of Iceland. :)
