I wouldn’t blame Whitley in the slightest if he sold them out. His sister and company literally destroyed their family & pretty much doomed Atlas and Mantle
Imagine if big-sis Winter acted cold, aloof, and dismissive of Weiss in V3? If she talked down to her little sister and belittled her for her flaws and failings? The fandom would have demonised Winter for being a horrible and abusive sibling. Weiss is Whitley's Winter, and she should understand more than anyone else why that matters. Even after Winter left to join the military, Weiss seemed dependent on her as a source of positive interaction and support. Whitley watches both of his siblings leave him alone with abusive parents and the show does nothing to show that they ever checked up on him. At best Weiss just kind of ignores him, and at worst talks down to him, making his sarcastic "did you miss me?" routine feel rather justified, cause she never acts like it. Weiss, after having friends and teachers to help her recognize her mistakes and grow in a positive way, had the chance to be the mentor to someone else and *actively* refused to. Not going to lie, this destroyed her character arc. Any positive changes just come across as spiteful actions to annoy her father since she can't give a brother the support she needed from Winter. All I can say is: good thing people didn't treat V1 Weiss the way she treats Whitley.
Back then so many fans thought Weiss in V1 was too bitchy and mean, only to warm up and like her as time went on. Funny to see it happen to Whitley now, only for Weiss to turn a 180 back again, only it's worse because she' supposed to be older and wiser.
Well damn. I always thought of him as a nothing character. I know her "standing up" to her little brother is supposed to be a "You Tell Him" moment. But think about it. This kid. Has been left with his alcoholic mother and money grubbing father where he is nothing to this family. His two sisters, the ones he may have admired, Both rebelled and left (one for the military and one as a huntress), leaving him alone. Sure he may live a pampered life but having no influence, no bloodline semblance, and no option. He has to endure what has been dealt to him. And Weiss just never thought about it, never wondered what happened to him. The moments where he acts like a dick, he probably felt amazing for having some sense of control over another person. Any time they met, Weiss just brushes him off and never connects to him. So of course he'd give a sarcastic remark to his sister for not asking how he's been with everything going on. Kid might be stressed due to all the shit that's been happening this past 2 volumes. He cant ignore it, it's right outside his house and he should keep tabs on what his father does. Weiss distrusts Whitley because he acts just like his father, even though he was manipulated that way Whitley is mad at Weiss for their father being taken away, because that means Whitley is just gonna be thrown in the shadows again. He was always jealous of Weiss and Winter for seemingly being Jacques' favourites, so he tried to make himself to be just like his father, hoping to get some approval from him. But he didn't get that approval until Jacques stripped the heiress title from Weiss. Whitley just needs his sisters to be there for him, but they both abandoned him to be stuck with his abusive father who doesn't love him at all and his alcoholic mother who is so depressed that she can't bare to face her kids that she loves so much
Whitley just needed anyone to be there for him. Anyone. Winter had Ironwood. Weiss had Beacon. Whitley was alone and clung to the only person he could that wasn't busy drinking themselves into intoxication: Jacques... who then proceeded to groom Whitley into a mini-Jacques all while Whitley became his lapdog in hopes of getting the faintest shard of approvation, which for him would equal affection, all while developing this grudge towards Weiss and Winter because they left him, never looked back and never tried establishing communications.

Treating Whitley like this is unacceptable. He’s never impeded her or shown any ability in combat, so drawing a weapon on him, especially as he’s her own blood, it ridiculous. Treating him like a child is almost worse. He wanted to do something, anything which may have been able to help his sister, and she spat on it. Utterly ridiculous.
It's not really ridiculous, it just shows what she stated: He's not family to her. And since she see herself as the heiress of the Schnee family, it's her home.
@@EngineScypex Yup Weiss decided at a young age she never wanted a brother and left him behind a long time ago and finds it perfectly okay to threaten a defenceless child just to get her way.
@@windghost2 A damn shame. Who isn't to say his attitude is because he was abused himself and he likely developed his father's trait over the years. For we knew, he could've been manupulated all his life.
I get that they might've been in a rush, but did she really have to strong-arm her way into the mansion? When they could've gone to a number of other places? I was hoping Weiss would make an effort to try and connect with Whitley, especially after what her mother said, but guess the writers didn't have time for that.
@@larrytherustyboii7442 Yep he is a innocent young human who is being threatened by Remnant's version of Meta-humans/Mutants what can he even do to defend himself.
Weiss acts like she in charge , she send her father in jail no longer want the familys dust company , leave her drunk mother with her brother , but she takes over the house ? how's that makes any sense?
Didn't Weiss use to hate Winter for doing the exact thing she's doing to Whitley? And didn't she use to act exactly like Whitley in season 1? So she's basically got the worst of both of them yet still hates them anyway. What a hypocrite
Exactly. From Ruby lying to Blake standing up for the oppressed Faunus from her comfy mansion - and don't even get me started on Yang - it's really sad that the word "hypocrite" more accurately describes our main four with each new Volume.
@@someoneelseishere5964 I think it's because Blake spoke as if she personally experienced racism but it turns out she is the daughter of what is essentially a King and lived in a mansion. She had a happier childhood than Weiss, Ruby and Yang! She says Menagerie is a shitty place but she lives with both parents on a massive estate on a beautiful tropical island. She also believes that asking for the oppressors to "stop pressing me" will work (a typical view of those who never experienced racism). It never does. Black people in the US only got civil rights as a result of the riots after MLK's and JFK's murders (violent acts which led to positive changes). Otherwise, it would have taken much longer or not happen at all. She comes off a bit like those rabid SJWs: the ones who come from middle-class backgrounds who've never truly felt oppression/hate from those in charge and only rant and rave because it sounds cool and makes them look progressive. She calls Wiess a "selfish little girl" but her backstory implies that she's equally selfish, if not more.
@@grandempressvicky6387 They were probably poor at some point before getting that big mansion. Plus people are still gonna be racist to Faunus no matter how high up some of them are. It's like in real life, people are still racist to others no matter how high up they are. Plus, I don't know why it's bad thing for Blake to defend her own kind even if she's does live in a big place. No matter what, you should always defend individuals who are being treated unfairly. It shouldn't matter if you're rich or not if you're standing up for them, you're standing up for them.
For real. I bailed on the show back in Volume 6 and even just from these glances to see if I ought to get into it again, it still looks like Whitley's only purpose as a character was just so Jacques had someone specific to threaten to pass Weiss over for. What a waste, not to mention that it honestly looks like the writers legitimately don't understand, despite that shallow lip service from Willow, that Whitley, even as the favorite child, is every bit as much a victim of Jacques' abuse and Willow's neglect as Weiss is, especially when you remember that the only reason Jacques favors him is because he successfully trapped the lad. Weiss comes out looking awful too, because, like the writers, she's basically dismissed him as nothing more than her insufferable brother who only exists to cause problems for her, rather than seeing him as his own distinct person. So what the hell was this kid supposed to do, Weiss? Evidently, he wasn't born with the potential to run away from that shit hole of a family swinging a sword like you and your sister, so how else exactly was he supposed to make it other than by trying to coexist with your sperm donor?
Worst part is, I probably don't even know if he has good relationships with them. He might be desperate for friends and confidants, but he's also desperate trying to get some semblance (ah ah, funny pun) of respect from his father, so he' probably feel like he should treat the staff like his father treats them.
there are members in my family I genuinely despise for various reasons i dont even them them as my real 'family', and even i wouldn't welcome them with a switchblade to the face there just asshole people, just ignore them and move on even if there are people you hate that much thers no reason to act like your gonna kill them, especially when its her fathers fault not even Whitley
@@zacrylist5748 Fair enough, there are some families that deserve that, but in this situation, Weiss went to where Whitley was, plus Jacques is the one who caused all her real grief.
@@zacrylist5748 I assume you also left these people with an abusive family just because they were a bit annoying to you, because that's how Weiss is treating her brother by pulling a blade on him.
Honestly the way Weiss has treated her brother pisses me off immensely and feel sympathy for Whitley to a point unknown. As the oldest sibling, this shit down right hurts to watch, like yes siblings have arguments, one is more annoying than the other but GOD acknowledging they are a person too and they are also suffering is so important.
Some Heroes. A band of hobo mercenaries that threw a city into Chaos our of self-righteousness and then made an abused boy feel like even more of a prisoner in his own home. This isn't even good vs evil or shades of grey. This is a moral clusterfuck. Who do I want to win? @@Cptsuccess Whitley is hated by almost everyone in RWBY, Yet even in real life too I've saw a bunch of people hating on him just because he was a sassy spoiled brat, Isn't Weiss was also like that ever since at the start of V1? I've never seen people hating on Weiss at the beginning of V1 🤦 RT really wanted to make Whitley one of the most hated characters in RWBY but Whitley just ended up being one of the fans favorite characters
Whitley it literally just a kid and has had to deal with his life being surrounded by his sisters being away and his parents on the verge of their own self destruction. It's extremely sad because even with his snotty attitude, we have to take into consideration that Weiss straight up doesn't care about him. She even put a sword to his neck, which if is any indication represents she has no feelings left to give for him. Why threaten someone who isn't a threat? We can argue Whitley is a brat towards her, making Weiss more suspicious but he has real abandonment issues because of her. His remarks are because he genuinely feels these things but knows he will be pushed aside. As always. The family gives no recognition to him because he's young and cannot do things for himself. The kid has watched from the sidelines for so long but still wants to be a part of his sisters lives only to get rejected. Whitley isn't an enemy but Weiss certainly burned that bridge with threatening his life so casually.
I mean if the writers were smarter it could be argued that by threatening Whitley and locking him away, Weiss is giving him plausible deniability in case the fuzz shows up. “Officers I was held at sword point. Any aid that was offered to the fugitives was under duress.” Unfortunately I think they’re just gonna have Whitley rat them out, which of course makes him an irredeemable villain instead of a guy who’s doing what you do when a group of heavily armed lunatics kick down your door and take over your house.
The last volume made me realize something... that Whitley really isn’t a bad character. He was raised the wrong way, and has no other person to go to. PoS father, alcoholic and crazy mother, a military sister who removed herself from the family, and another sister who is basically neglecting him... kid is legitimately alone. Feel horrible for him, he’s so young.
Is that so? Everyone is responsible for his own actions. Weiss did enroll to Beacon. Given the fact she received pocket money we can assume that Jaque agreed to it. We know, that nearly everyone enrolling in a huntsmen academy was at a training school before, so we can assume Weiss enrolled there, too. Same with Winter. She enrolled to Atlas and joined the military. There is no hint that they needed to run away and hide for that. So what did Whitley? He stayed at home, enjoyed the life of someone, who doesn't need to do anything thanks to the family.
@Al3xh413 How about going outside your bubble and thing about it a bit harder? It's not too hard, I promise. Yes, theoretically Weiss could murder Jaque no problem. Do you think she could get away with that? AFTER the fall of beacon, when she was already pretty much a trained huntress, he arrested, slapped, insulted and threatened her. So why do you think he didn't do that BEFORE she could polish her skills on the academy or even training school? But you could already read the biggest point: Would he give her pocket money if he wanted her to not being there? Not really. He just stopped that, after Weiss refused to even talk to him (understandable, I think). And Winter let us know, that she was in a similar situation in the past. No, Whitley is not a fighter. But huntsmen isn't the only profession in Remnant. Much like Jaque allowed Winter and Weiss to enroll as huntresses, he would certainly not deny if Whitley wanted to learn a somewhat good profession.
@Al3xh413 Neither was mine, I just recommend trying to see the situation in a different view. If we're talking about abusive parents, we usually talk about violence, maybe even rape or sh*t like that. Is that actually what Jaque does? When he slapped Weiss, she didn't really leave the impression, that this happened before. And to be fair: she did unleash her semblance on a civilian guest before. So where's the idea from, that Whitley is a victim? Where's the idea from, that Whitley needed to run away to leave the house? When Weiss first left for beacon, there's no hint she ran away. More the opposite: Would Jaque sent her pocket money if she'd ran away? Don't think so. Even more with Winter, since she trained at Atlas, she was in reach for Jaque.
If this show had better writers they could really use this against Weiss in an interesting way to show how wrong she was here. Imagine how devastating but deserving it'd be to see Whitley utterly betray Weiss and/or team RWBY in some really big way during an important moment when they needed help the most; a way so bad that it completely secures their loss. And he does it with just a sad smile and saying "Help you? Like you did for me, right?" as he delivers the victory to the enemy. And then how Weiss gets a wake up call, realizes she was just perpetuating the cycle of abuse and now it has cost them dearly. But the reality is that they'll instead frame any betrayal (if that happens) as Weiss being right to treat him like this. Or if he does come around to their side he'll apologize for being wrong and absolve Weiss entirely of being the one who should be apologizing. Sigh... I hate it here.
I like your idea a lot. Sadly, you're correct and if they did something like that, all the blame would all be on Whitley's shoulders with Weiss learning nothing.
What do you mean better writers? Miles luna has been there sense the beginning with Monty. And also how do you know they wont have actions to their consequences?? Everyone just assumes everything
@@Rhys1021 Not only did RWBY have writing problems from the start that *still* plague the show to this day, they completely went astray the moment they gained a bigger control over the show. Miles and Kerry have always been shit writers, but Monty at least seemed to curb the worst parts of it. We're just seeing how bad they always have been since vol-4 after their "limiter" was removed. That isn't a fucking assumption, that is simply an *observation,* concluded by a healthy does of logic, critical thinking skills, and knowledge.
0:45 right here. This is a cry for help. He want his sister to acknowledge who he is. Notice how he says "brother" instead of his first name. He wants to be treated in a similar way as Weiss treats winter. If this dude turns into a villain someday; who can blame him? Just look how his family treats him.

Yang is always obssesed with Blake and is hotheaded. Blake is selfish and hypocritical to Nora when she is not a character without Yang. Ruby gastlights Penny constantly. Now Weiss. :'( Penny still best girl at least. She is the more human character.
He’s a lonely, scared child who models himself after the only sting and influential person around him; his father. His mother is an alcoholic, his father is a criminal, his sisters got out of the house. He gets treated with disdain and like a brat, but I don’t think there’s anyone in the world who has put any effort into having a positive relationship with him personally. He even points it out to Weiss here, she makes no effort with him and just considers him a weight off of a sibling, so he doesn’t want to make the effort here
So basically Whitley is just as much of a victim as his siblings difference being that he didn't inherit any powers therefore had to use the only thing he had his intelect and understanding of the family business and he's supposed to be the villain for that???
@@Cptsuccess it is, that’s how Adam slapping Blake is seen as some cruel crime while Blake slaps Sun (several times) not only with no reprisal or consequence but we as the audience are meant to find it “funny.”
