Weiss: Claims Whitley wants nothing to do with her. Whitley in every scene: Tries almost desperately to talk to Weiss and get her to talk to him, even if he has to be a little shit to do it.

3:48 This was the moment I knew Whitley wasn't some obnoxious heel for Weiss. If he was some vapid arse, he'd have gloated immediately, or tried to shift the blame back. Instead, he genuinely got pissed. He knows how Jacques would react, and he knew that WEISS knows how he'd react. Her to try and pin that on him probably pissed him off something feirce. Doesn't help that...Whitley really IS blameless in this. Everything that led to this moment, from her ignoring father's calls to coming back, to singing a song about rebellion, to snapping on that guy at the Gala was 100% Weiss. (even though I approve) If you're going to be free and break your cage, you can't lament that your pretty cage is broken. 🤷

Weiss wanted to be free of her dad. NOT the schnee family name or the company. She said earlier that she wanted to fix the way her family's company operated. I think she just felt betrayed by Whitley. Not sure if that's fair or entitled. Still.... feeling aren't always logical but they are valid. The rest of you comment I totally agree on. Your input is very well constructed and accurate

There was a time when I was absolutely on the Whitley hate train, but as I grew older and after Volume 8, my opinion on the character has largely changed. He's yet another victim of abuse who simply picked a different survival strategy than Weiss or Winter, and he desperately wanted to be closer to them and acknowledged by them, but their different reactions to Jacques' abuse and Willow's neglect prevented that from happening until Jacques got arrested. I hope we see some of Whitley's growth in Volume 10 as he, along with many of the other Atlesian elites, have to start over and reckon with their role in the ravaging and oppression of Mantle and Vacuo.
@nyar9649
@nyar9649 Год назад
I’ve never actually seen any of the Schnee members actually being affection to Whitley, like directly. Even his father, the person he’s supposedly closest to, treats him like a servant or an assistant. Maybe that’s why he’s constantly trying to gain attention from Weiss, and has realised that only negatively towards her would gain him attention, which is gutting when you realise how old Whitley is. No one gives a shit about Whitley, even the actual fanbase who calls him Shitley. Weiss can easily talk to her friends, and Winter. Whitley on the other has no one accept an absent mother and a uncaring Boss for a father, and he lived in this situation for a long time alone.
@anthonyworstell3768
@anthonyworstell3768 Год назад
Weiss’ mother, Willow, has a point: Whitley was left alone. With only his parents who already hated each other, and are always… preoccupied with their own things. Can’t say I blame the kid for hating his sisters. After all, I never believed he cared about inheriting the Schnee Dust Company. Just to rub it in on Weiss so that he has an excuse to speak to his sister. Is it too late to make amends? Maybe. But at least Weiss, at least, took strides to be a better sister. That’s all I could ask. What drove this family’s breaking point is… just god awful.
@msk-qp6fn
@msk-qp6fn Год назад
But then again, Weiss and Winter were both children too, especially Weiss. And I imagine Winter took on a lot of abuse from Jacque for the sake of all of her siblings when she was younger too (she seemed more shell shocked about returning to the manor whereas weiss seemed mostly sad or annoyed as I recall). Honestly, it is just the tragedy of having a bad family environment.
@relic5752
@relic5752 Год назад
@@msk-qp6fnRight, but unfortunately Weiss is the only one he can really lash out at since she's the only one that interacts with him as a family member (Willow's alcoholism is a pretty big barrier, Winter never goes to the mansion, Jaques is grooming him to become another dust baron). Fittingly for this tragic mess, Weiss may hold conversations with him, but she doesn't see what his issues are, while Willow fully understands why he's acting the way does yet is so shut down as a parent that she doesn't do anything other than plead to Weiss to take care of him in her stead.

He starts dropping it a bit in volume 7 to emote more (be it for sarcasm purposes or when say Watts has him freaked) and then in 8 it just thaws. Whitley was a brat the same reason Weiss was yet people dumped all over him. He had no friends, only his drunk mom and evil father. Weiss was racist and discriminatory to an entire group of people + constantly berates and puts down Ruby yet she gets easily forgiven. Meanwhile, Whitley’s biggest crime is……..being annoying and taking the company and people hate him.

Now I did enjoy the Klein moment but, follow me here - has he changed in the slightest? Popular opinion pre volume eight had Whitley as a follower and a sycophant. Obeyed and supported Jacques as a survival trait in an abusive family. He changes his allegiance as soon as Weiss held all the power.
@MrGksarathy
@MrGksarathy Год назад
No, but I think it's more that he always wanted to do good and be praised for it, but it wasn't until Jacques was out of the way that he could do so. Even if he did simply switch allegiances because Weiss had the power, this is still an opportunity for him to grow and find himself outside of abusive power structures.
@relic5752
@relic5752 Год назад
Except Weiss doesn't have any power. In fact, Whitley himself holds more power in the Schnee household than she does in V8 and he doesn't do much to help Jaques but goes out of his way to help out the team even when *nothing* is expected from him. Hell, he even risks his life for Mantle and RWB's sake during the confrontation with the Hound a couple of times. Beyond that, there are several scenes that imply that he is not a sycophant to his father because he wants to be but rather that he *has* to be. To give two examples: his reaction to Weiss being disinherited was that of sadness until he's in front of Jaques, V8's implications gives us the reading of "as father says" line to Weiss as more of his coping mechanism and warning to Weiss rather than the threat it initially came off as. Ultimately, Whitley is actually played off well as a scared kid who did what he could to cope being the only left in an abusive household with no method of truly leaving
@user-cx4px3jh2f
@user-cx4px3jh2f Год назад
@@relic5752 Weiss walked into the manor and held a sabre to his throat. Weiss has the power. With Jacques out if the way, Willow has the SDC. Willow has power. Everything else you stated I agree. Scared kid, coping, etc. What Whitley doesn't know - do ther powerful women in his family give two shits about him? Especially after backing the wrong horse in Jacques.
@relic5752
@relic5752 Год назад
@@user-cx4px3jh2f Except Willow doesn't, Whitley does. *He's* the one with access to Jacques' computer and authorized the SDC evacuation of Mantle. Whitley himself says that he called Klein of his own accord since Nora needed help. Not due to a threat from Weiss nor some sycophant behavior, notably, he doesn't try to take credit and downplays his role to Weiss, who according to you "has all the power." Weiss immediately responded to his selfless actions with proper affection, which we can see is very effective as he immediately takes an active role figuring out plans with *his* control and access to SDC records. Beyond the reconciliation with Weiss about calling Klein, his mother and Weiss saving him from the Hound with Weiss specifically calling out that she "didn't forget them," he has no reason to doubt Willow and Weiss legitimately care about him. Weiss makes a point to look and smile at Whitley when she confirms that trust is a risk, showing that she is willing to risk it on him. Look, I get not liking his snobby attitude, but there really isn't anything in the story left to imply that he isn't genuinely interested in helping the heroes out.
@user-cx4px3jh2f
@user-cx4px3jh2f Год назад
@@relic5752 Precisely none of those examples prove Whitley had power. Several deadly ladies with guns and knives invaded his home and could kill him on a whim. They have power. Whitley has options. Access to resources. He has these because the girls elected not to tie him up. Nor do they disprove the original point. That Whitley is an abuse survivor. And a people pleaser. In order to survive said abuse. Pleasing the powerful people around him. Every example you painstakingly listed was an absuse survivor pleasing the ladies with guns. Again, the ones whom could kill him on a whim. Keep them happy. Granted, Weiss is probably the first person in his life to reward his people pleasing with a hug. Reinforcing good behaviour. Good first step in setting him straight. But if it had been, like, Ironwood or Salem to walk in the door first that kid is going to bend over backward keeping them happy. Because pleasing powerful people is survival. Also. Never saw Whitley as a little shit. He's a fourteen year old boy. 'Dad' is god in his eyes. Because is is a good person, he defends his father against those evil, nasty, plotting sisters who turned their back on family and forever are trying to tear it down.

The more I look at the RWBY series, the more I appreciate the supporting and side characters, and the more I become indifferent to our main characters and antagonists. Take Cardin for example. Sure, he was created as a stereotypical bully, but at the end of volume 1 he at least had the decency and honor to leave Jaun alone as a thank you for saving his life. Which was a really nice touch from such a character. We also have Roman and Neo, who are the only villains in this series with character. Feisty, malicious, but at the same time charismatic in their own way and committed to their criminal path with all their hearts. They don't try to pretend to be someone they are not, they don't try to play heroes, martyrs or visionaries that no one understands (I'm looking at you Adam, Cinder, Hanzel, Watt). You could feel the chemistry between them as they engaged in their criminal activities. They were just real, unlike the rest of the clowns that surround Salem. Next we have Dr. Oobeck, I admit that I have a slight weakness for his character because he is also passionate about history, so it was nice to meet a professional colleague in this series, but he was also one of the few characters in this series that really forced the RWBY team to reflect on their behavior and motivation. And he did it in a very accessible and unobtrusive way, which is also a nice touch. Then we have Ironwood, who I consider to be my favorite character from Ozpin's little circle. A brave, decisive, maybe a bit stubborn soldier at times, but everything he did from the beginning of the series had sincere intentions and the desire to ensure safety and a better future for the inhabitants of Remnant. That's why I will never forgive RT for what they did to his character in volume 8, nor will I forgive our "heroes" for how they treated him in volume 7. And finally we have Whitley, who is a truly underrated character given his plight and tragic past. Abandoned by his own sisters, who should have supported him as they supported each other considering their father had tried to control all three of them throughout their lives. Forced to live under one roof with an alcoholic mother and a despot father. Reliant only on his own strength. No wonder he became a bit dry, cynical and distant over the years, considering he could never count on anyone from his family. In Volume 8, Weiss should have apologized to Whitley for her behavior, not the other way around.

While I get not having the best impression of the kid, remember that despite being threatened by his own sister, his immediate follow up to RWB+N pleading to stay at the mansion is offering his help. Which he had consistently offered to Weiss even if it has been in the worst, most backhanded way possible. It is telling that when free from Jaques' influence, most of Whitley's actions take on the selfless flair that Weiss has, which I think is ultimately the point: the Schnee siblings, for all their baggage, are cut from the same noble, if somewhat snobby, cloth
