When he said 'he looked like me', I felt some emotion because people don't understand how important it is to talk to someone who can relate to you or who can get to your level without being condescending or judgmental. Big ups for discussing mental illness and removing the stigma.
I loved this interview...YAY breakfast club!!! I know ppl get frustrated with envy but I was glad he asked the questions b/c that's how our community feels and thinks; which hinders getting help. Those who know better just assume everyone knows better and that's not true.
word lets look at god. why did he make mental illness? why does Rwenshaun have to live with voices in his head and theres people exactly like him that dont? what did he do wrong?
im bipolar and believe me its not fun at all..the mood swings, the depression, the liking something one minute then losing interest the next, the stress of overthinking about nothing really..i tell ya, its no picnic
im on natural things and its been working great so far, but i still get mood swings from time to time but that's only when someone hurts my feelings deeply, i will say its not like it was before where i would just burst out with anger for no reason
I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I know how you feel. I find myself questioning everything. I get scared to try anything cause In the back of my mind I'm thinking "you'll just give up in a few week." Smh. Racing thoughts are the worst though. Even in a quiet room I'll never have a quiet moment of peace. I was diagnosed with major depression disorder at a young age but this is a new beast for me...
them racing thought are a trip, to the point where it can literally drive you crazy, i cant believe im saying this but i rather deal with the other side effects of bipolar then the racing thoughts that comes with it
ENVY HAS A PONT ABOUT FOOD. ITS A REASON WHY THEIR ARE FAST FOOD CHAINS, FRIED CHICKEN, PIZZA AND CHINESE SPOTS. I DONT KNOW ANYBODY WHO WENT TO RUN DOWN ON SOMEONE WHILE ON A FRUIT N VEGGIE DIET
Side note: I'm so lucky to be a black woman. I have the most handsome choice in men. These two brothers are very handsome. shout out to all the brothers.
As a psychology major at a predominately white school I totally understood the taboo "black folks don't talk about mental health" conversation. Great interview!
Such an important topic to discuss. Well done for tackling this subject so well. And agreed! We need to stop saying 'commit suicide'. 'Die by suicide' is a better term to use. Suicide is a symptom of depression and mental health issues. People die from mental illness.
Am I the only one who loves when Dj Envy asks questions. I appreciate the perspective from being naive to certain things because he's asking genuine questions and he receives genuine answers.
Good morning black men, women and children. I hope the ancestors and the almighty guide y'all while you roam the streets going about your lawful business. Please practice the art of "walking away" my brethren. Most of the time, the disagreement isn't necessary, especially when we have ppl depending on us to be smart and successful. If it doesn't interfere with the lives f yourself, family, your close friends or your property, then it ain't worth it. If it does though, make you defend it with all your might and don't stop until the threat is neutralized. Be safe in the streets today. Be strong, be wise and be proud to be descendants of the black continent, I love y'all, take care ✊🏾🖤✊🏾🖤✊🏾🖤✊🏾🖤 #blackways
Isidro salas You on here spreading ignorance bro. You can believe in God or a higher power without being religious. It's called spiritual faith. There are plenty of people that are religious but aren't christian also sooo you definitely aren't woke.
I'm so glad they did this interview. I wish I lived in an area with these brothers so I could talk to them. I know I probably have issues and i know I'm to proud to go get help. The fear I have the most is telling someone I have issues and they don't understand and it hurts me in the end.
This is one reason why I love the breakfast club there not just talking hip hop there allways talking about things that matter and giving us info that can benefit are lives in a way love y'all keep up the good work 😎
Interesting statement Envy made "parents beat you and then you're straight" !! I've noticed that black kids get "disciplined" out of anger and rarely is the reason for it explained. Hitting kids with shoes, pans, spatulas, boots, belts, remotes, rulers and so forth doesn't do anything, in some cases, but increase built up anger in the kid. That can lead to fights at school, trouble with the law and so forth. Abusing kids under the guise of "discipline" isn't cool. Hitting kids because you're upset with work and/or because the other parent left you and the kid looks and reminds you of them and you're taking anger out on them.
A Scott Excellent points made! From experience and observation, most black parents beat their children out of rage and frustration of their own lives (i.e. single parenting, dead end job, no spouse, poor living conditions, etc.)
Kéle H. So true. Just unfortunate. Beating children doesn't mean they'll not do xyz when they're older. Just builds up anger which turns into other acts of violence toward others..or bad attitudes.
Bro...people don't understand how traumatic American life is to their psyche...i was in Africa for 6 months...didn't have a lot of the luxuries of American life...but bro, not even a fraction of the stress...
this is an excellent and needed conversation - so glad they discussed how nutrition, physical exercise & mental stimulation through reading has an impact on our mental muscle ...
I'm glad y'all are talking about this because it's important. I am trying to bring awareness with my music and I love to hear people with a platform giving that opportunity for these important topics. Thank you guy for putting them on.
TheJds04 Totally agree as well. They act like Envy is so stupid but his questions in this interview were totally on point. His questions definitely cleared up some common misconceptions.
Amazing show ! The breakfast club is so important for society I can honestly say you have become such an important intersection for the black/ all communities. Kinda like church without the condemnation or the barbershop /beauty salon only with important professionals to share theirs stories. Thank you for this show I'm so glad someone is finally addressing the biggest American epidemic to date mental illness. How many schools movie theaters have to be shot up how many men& women have to be homeless or incarcerated for the country to pull the 🚨 alarm? Thank you
Angela Yee always gotta friend going through whatever the guest goes through...Girl is ya bad luck or nah? With that being said, just let the guest talk so we can learn something new......we don't need the gossip!
This guy was so open and honest. Really gotta give it to him. I have such a fear of developing a mental illness like that it’s so scary how random it is.
SO SO SO important to discuss mental health especially within the Black Community since there is such a stigma around it! Sometimes we all need someone to sort through things with and I think it's great you guys are addressing this!
Even though I understand this is merely a reflection of my own neuroses, I can't help but look at Mr. Miller with overwhelming disbelief. How could a man so physically perfect possibly have ever felt depression? I mean got.....DAMN! I would not be able to think coherently in his presence.. I mean, my friend wouldn't lol ;D
I have/had social anxiety... it has affected my life throughout a large portion of my life. I got help two half years ago and I'm getting myself on my feet now.
I'm glad this is being talked about. I went through a really rough patch in my life and other black people dissuaded me from seeing a counselor, but I ignored them and honestly think that saved my life. My only concern is when black people like to say the phrase "mental illness is real" whenever someone doesn't act right. I appreciate that we're trying to recognize when people are ill, but some folks will say stuff like that about Bow Wow. LOL He's not mentally ill. He is just a liar.
thank you so much for talking about this sometimes I think my family's and friends never understand me....I just email this to everyone maybe this can make them see more
I'm speaking strictly from a poor, white kid from Appalachia. I've releated to this episode more than any I've every seen. I work in political campaigns which has been in rural, black areas that are only opposite to home due to our skin color. Still, our comonalaties which happens to be our tragedies, are all the same. I related to this so much and also the fact that it's also an issue with the male community is definitely a problem. Mental health is all-around not in a good place and I was really interested to see the issue of race that it plays in it as well. Thank you for this interview. I really enjoyed it and learned so much. It covered a lot of mental health issues that aren't taleked about and also other factors I hadn't even thought about. Good job, TBC for this. Always a fan and this is why.

kudos to the breakfast club for this convo. hoping more prominent people get on board and follow suit!
this was real informative interview, especially being a African American that struggles with sense of acknowledging whether I have a mental illness or problem.
Thank you for doing this interview. My husband was recently diagnosed with Bipolar 1 with manic episodes and I feel lost at times on how to deal with the rollercoaster of emotions and the voices that he is experiencing.
this is what breakfast club represents now uplifting and educating our black brothers and sisters ..Thank you breakfast club. With that being said i dont wanba hear shit about comparison to everyday struggle
This interview is right on time being that Envy recently opened up about his suicide attempt over Gia. Mental health is real & the more conversations we have within our communities the better.
a lot of insurance still doesn't cover therapy or it's covered and the copay is cost preventative based on the frequency of your visits. psychiatry, unfortunately, is one of the only specialities that doesn't look at the organ it's diagnosing, that may be why many other fields consider it a soft science. that's awful given how important mental health is.
Great point that when you open up about your issues people are gonna give you advise that they are not qualified to give and don't know what they are talking about.
I think this interview was very interesting an eye opening alot of my people don't believe in mental illnesses they make fun of it an I think this conversation needs alot more light on it within the black community
I'm glad they had these two men on the show because people love to say just go to church or pray about mental health issues. Also I cringe every time DJ Envy asks a question Angela and Cthagod always have to chime in to make his question less stupid.
