Polaris aged pretty well overall. It is already outperforming the GTX 10 series (1060 and sometimes 1070) in a lot of games.

In my eyes the 570 is subpar to the 1060 6 gig, never mind the 1070. They are even worse than the 970. The 580 8gig will trade blows with the 1060 6 gig on a good day but it cannot touch the 1070, perhaps except some super radeon friendly games. Just saying.

Living in Pakistan, a country where you rarely get access to current gen tech without obscene prices, The 2nd hand market is our primary means of building a gaming PC. So it's bittersweet to see that while Nvidia and AMD both are releasing worse budget cards, the old ones (which are cheaper) still hold up extremely well. Also just wanna say that this is the first channel i started following when it was really small cause it focused on Budget Gaming. Makes me happy that even though the channel has grown to a very large scale, you still focus on budget options more than premium ones.

Yeah power usage really kills the deal factor for older cards, especially if you add in the fact that they have short expected lifespans due to ETH mining, and no warranty. If you've got a decent Visa/Mastercard, that 1 year warranty on the new graphics card becomes a 2 year warranty for free.

That's everything, 2 NVME drives, 2 SSDs and 3 HDDS, plus peripherals, audio amp, and 32" 1440p monitor. However, I would like to have seen the actual GPU power draw as well, in these days of high electricity prices in the UK; even an extra 50 watt power draw adds up over a month; especially if like me, gaming is a 4-6 hour per day experience - I am too ill to do much else, and even that total is often split into 1-2 hour stints before I have to go lie down.

@@purplegill10 The RX 6600 is in a bit of a tricky situation; the PCIe 4.0 x8 shouldn't be a problem, but as I bought it for a system with a Ryzen 5700G, I'm limited to PCIe 3.0 x8. It's a shame AMD limited their APUs to PCIe 3.0 and limited their lower-end GPUs to less than x16, the combination means I would have been better off getting an Intel CPU. It's not as bad as the RX 6500, which is x4, but still - I'm not getting the FPS I would have gotten from the card with either a Ryzen 5600X or a Core i5 12400. And the 5600X wasn't an option at the time, due to the lack of iGPU. The Ryzen 7000 series is much better in that regards, unfortunately their iGPUs are weaker than either Intel or AMD's own older APUs. I hope the 7000G series will do well and prove to AMD high-powered iGPUs on high-powered CPUs supporting medium-powered GPUs is the way forward, for budget-conscious customers.

My experience exactly. The only reason I sold my 580 8GB, after owning it for 4 years, and bought a 5700 XT was that I switched to a larger, 1440p monitor. Even like that, it was far from unviable (it probably does about as well at 1440p as the 6400 from the video does at 1080p), but still, it's been 4 years and I wanted to maintain the level of performance so the temptation to get a 5700XT was too great (and, at 1440p, the 5700XT actually outperforms 580 running at 1080p). Having said that, the new monitor actually does some kind of upscaling when running games at a lower resolution and it's not magic, but it does the job surprisingly well!

Max 75W vs 250W / Real 60W vs 180W - difference being 120-175W an hour. Even with lowest difference of 120 watts an hour, at 4.50 DKK pr kW an hour, for 6 hours gaming a day, 20 days a month, for 12 months equates to some 750 DKK a year, saved in powerbill. (I have an RX 590, Sapphire Gold edition, which rarely goes above 200W on older games.)

This is the main reason I am glad I got a 6400. I have a low profile variant and it is slightly less powerful in terms of performance, but it maxes out at 32W as measured by MSI Kombustor. From my point of view, the RX 6400 only makes sense in its low profile one slot variant. It is the most powerful model in that format. But if your PC is compatible with something bigger, the GTX 1660 is a much better option (I have seen them around £180 in the second hand market a few times) Also, some RX 6600 cost around £230 at some retailers, so I wouldn't be surprised if one day I find a second hand one below £200.

Playing with the fan curves, I've tried it without the case side on with a fan blowing in. I've even repasted the die with a quality thermal paste and nothing stops it eventually throttling down. We had a few of these XFX RX 590 fatboys for our gaming pcs and you are right, they are the worst cards I have ever seen. 4 out of 10 were unstable out of the box. The cooling system is just too underpowered for the performance tweaked polaris chip. The reason for the instability was the temperature, especially, if the case had a bad air flow. But when im remembering correctly you can switch the bios-switch to a bios with a stricter fan curve. I grabbed one of the fatboys, because the company couldnt sell them and after applying liquid metal all problems were solved and the card stayed at 74 C, even with the quiet bios and no undervolt (which i strongly recommend). Believe me, Polaris is very performance sensitive depending on which system you put it into. To give advice to anyone considering a Polaris GPU, you want to put it into a PCIe Version 3 system at x16 speed and it should also be minimum 4th Gen Intel i series or 3rd Gen Ryzen. I have tested this in-depth and I can give anyone considering it good advice, Polaris has a lot of computing power, but also a lot of non-DirectX12 neglected driver optimization, which you want IPC and PCI Bandwidth to blast through. I tested four different setups with my RX 480 and it hated PCIe 2.0 x8 speed in a multi GPU system; in addition, Polaris, Vega and older Radeon GPUs are still missing the DirectX9 Unreal Engine 3 optimizations on Windows 10 which was present up until 17.7.1. Therefore, having a Polaris GPU in a FX 8350 system, or something like an i7 2600K will mostly give you a good experience in most e-Sport games, but a horrible experience in an old game like Unreal Tournament 3.

@@FalenGood actually my refurbished GTX 1060 had no issue with the PCIe 2.0 x8 speed, and like I said, this was only 1/4 systems I tested it in and the x8 speed was only one of my test scenarios out of many, many test scenarios which did not include the limit of x8 speed. Other use cases that will affect Radeon users in the same manner, is having a Ryzen APU. Most AM4 motherboards (if not all) limit PCIe speed to x8 on the primary PCIe slot, just by having something like a Ryzen 5 5600G in your system or any other am4 APU. There is no information on wether disabling the iGPU in the BIOS will restore the full x16 speed back to the primary slot, which is why I ended up buying a Ryzen 5 5600 instead of the 5600G. When referring to Polaris, PCIe speed is not even the major problem, but one of many I definitely had to mention. I was constantly crashing through games at random which was annoying, and was instantly saving up for a brand new GPU. So like nearly 2 years later, got upgraded to a 6900XT. I noticed how you didn’t tell the audience how the RX 590 was SUCKING DOWN more than 3 times the electricity just to maintain its paltry lead. I believe the the RX 590 uses roughly 160 watts, while the RX 6400 uses a mere 53 watts provided by the PCIe slot. Looking 👀 at the frames per watt, the RX 6400 is the absolute clear winner here assuming, of course, you have an appropriate PCIe slot for it.

Most recently I'd had it in my current dual-monitor Ryzen7-based system. At the time of purchase I had mixed feelings due to electrical power and price, but it turned out to be a solid choice. I certainly feel that got my money's worth out of it given how world events unfolded post-purchase. In terms of FPS it was/is still quite capable at 1080p even after half a decade of service. I only recently replaced it with a 6600XT because GPU prices finally started dropping. As it turned out the new card is about twice as powerful and I managed to find a price for only a bit more than what I paid for the old 480 all those years ago. Considering half a decade of inflation I'm not complaining. Retired the old card with honors and happily using the new.

RX 570/580/590 are still surprisingly capable, if don't play games at 4K (1440p may be doable, with tweaks and rather 30 FPS. At least for 4GB cards). Nice video, but maybe useful to mention power usage for both cards and PSU requirements...

The 6500XT is $160 which is how much a 590 is going for, roughly. It competes with the 590 blow for blow at 1080 but will have driver support for much longer if bought today.

I loved my RX 590! I remember it needed a fair amount of power, more than recommended for sure!

Still using my RX 470, bought it in 2016. Can still handle all the games I throw at it. Though I am not gonna lie, the upgrade itch gets to me sometimes but I am reminded that there is no need to dish out cash unnecessarily. Playing CP2077 at medium with FSR and man I still enjoy the quality. Part of me imagines how much more if it were cranked up to max with a more powerful GPU.

If yall are looking at an rx590 in 2024 then I would highly suggest that for budget builds, I picked min up for $80 albeit they seem to be floating around $100 used as of now, mine runs at 60fps minumum at 1080 med/high settings for just about everygame, I would HIGHLY suggest picking up one of these.

One could probably argue the low power consumption, and the availability of low profile cards gives the RX 6400 a niche the RX 590 doesn't cover. Of course there is a faster low profile card, the RTX A2000, but that card is a lot more expensive.

Yeah I can buy the rx 6400 for 130$ here. That makes it a very decent, cheap card. Basically twice as fast as the older rx 550/560 or 1030/1050s people are still using (including me)

Im still running an RX590, and updated my CPU to a 5th Gen Ryzen 5, and I'd say that, considering I bought most of my hardware 5-7 Years ago, I wouldnt consider upgrading it any time soon. It runs any older games looking just fine, and newer ones are a great experience at 1080p too, if you can live with playing with FSR enabled. The 8gb VRAM were a really good choice, since many games today make good use of it. HOWEVER, besides its nice Performance, there are two "Red Flags" imo. First, mine always have been running unstable, forcing me to underclock and struggle with weird driver issues in the past. In retrospect, I should have just returned it when I first noticed that, but not everyone, including my 17yo me, was knowledgeable enough to find the cause of failing drivers or crashing PCs. So, w/o warranty and high age, its just a bitter risk that I wouldnt recommend most people taking. Second, there is the INSANELY high Power draw. For a card that can be outperformed by entry level recent gpus, which consume half the power for paying 60-80€ more, wasting away 200W to look at a loading screen is bad for acoustics, bad for using a decent yet affordable PSU, and, considering that ive used this card almost daily for 4 years, probably also not worth the cost benefit. So, yeah its alright, and I like it, but RDNA /Navi cards are the obvious choice for today, IMO

I got my daughter a RX 590 Fatboy 8GB card for in her 2700X PC. She had a RX 570 4GB before but I needed it for another PC, and she didn't mind the upgrade. Didn't need to do anything just plop it in and turn it on.
