Edit: Just wanted to update the description and let everyone know that I’ve since returned this. I’ll make a follow on video about why I returned it, and what the better alternative solutions are if you’re looking for a portable battery powered rotary.
Just picked this Ryobi USB Lithium rotary tool up today, on sale at Home Depot currently for $49. My plan is to build a backpack carving kit around this rotary, and based on my first impression it seems like it will do great for that.
I’ll follow up down the line after I’ve got a couple dozen hours on it to see what longer term opinion I’ve formed on it.

Subscribed because your personality is great and I enjoy the way you discribe the tool lol but I enjoyed the video too. I just got one and took a little while to figure out how to use the chuck.

Sorry so long replying, had some minor life issues. Thanks a lot for the sub! Yeah that dust collector is a life saver for sure. I just found out I have the ability to go live, so I’ll just do a bunch of random carvings and what not.

I got the same thing at my local Home Depot, now i really don't mind Ryobi because you can beat em and the price but i must say i was extremely disappointed. Looks bad ass but has no power. Tun's of vibration/ loud and the safety shut off kicks on way too early. Thanks for the great post my man!!!😊

That small battery pack is a dead give away......wide open you'll be lucky to get 10 minutes. I was looking at getting the 18v one ...myself.

Thanks for review, like you said hard to find a video showing for woodcarving and not jewelry making lol... I just ordered the brushless rotary one also to try out since really couldn't find videos for woodcarving...

I’ll have a video out this week on the brushless rotary. That in my opinion is the best rotary to buy for someone starting out. Battery lasts for hours, no real vibration or heat of consequence from the flex shaft, and lots of torque on the low end. If it would just hit 35k rpm it would be perfect.
@EggyOrphan

@@chriscarveswood would you recommend the ryobi brushless rotary or the corded Dremel 3000??
@chriscarveswood
@chriscarveswood Год назад
@@EggyOrphan I would reccomend the Ryobi over the Dremel unless you need 35,000 RPM. If you do need to go that high, then the Dremel would be it since the Ryobi is capped at 25,000. I didn't find myself using 35,000 RPM that much, but now I'm primarily carving with an Oz Elite Micromotor, and at 40,000-50k RPM the double cut carbide burs really shine. I didn't notice that big difference at 35k, but I can go back and check. I'm actually doing a video today on the Ryobi brushless.

I recently got this tool. I'm satisfied with the performance and battery. Not so with the collet and nut. After use, it's hard to get the bit out of the collet. This is true with either type of collet nut. At first the power collet worked fine but gradually became so bad that I had to remove the nut and collet and use a finishing nail to knock the bit out from the back end. The same is true with the regular nut. I"m keeping the tool though because it's easier to hold than the stylus on the larger Ryobi rotary tool.

I've had the same problem in the past getting bits out of my router's collet. Someone showed me the trick of loosening the nut and the rapping the side off it with a screwdriver's handle or a boxed end wrench. Anything with a little mass to it. It pops the taper loose from the inside of the nut and frees the bit. Try it and see if it works for you.

Just saw this at Home Depot and wondered about the funky-looking chuck too lol. Poorly designed imo and seems to slow down the tool. Do you know if this will fit Dremel chucks? Or is it a different thread? Thank you for your review.

Do you think it would be useful, with a brass or soft steel wire wheel, to clean up some of your metal detecting finds out in the field?

Milwaukee should makes some M4 fuel tools. A 4 volt tool with a little bitty powerstate brushless motor.
@chriscarveswood
@chriscarveswood Год назад
I wonder why you don’t see them more in this rotary space. Maybe because Ryobi and Milwaukee are both owned by Techtronic, the parent company makes strategic decisions to not overlap too much.

Home Depot should price match in store vs their online price, you shouldn't have to do an online order...you might have to talk to a manager, a normal cashier might not be aware. Thanks for the video.

How does the power of this little guy compare to the Worx makerx? What about battery life?
@chriscarveswood
@chriscarveswood Год назад
Worx has this heat in every regard. Doesn’t hurt that the Worx goes on sale quite often.

I'm glad this guy isn't a surgeon.....otherwise the patient would have to wait another 20 mins after he'd finish going off on tangents.
