I'm shopping for an electric riding mower including the RYOBI 80V. Without ever owning a riding mower, I'm gathering information before even speaking to a salesperson. Your video is very helpful to me. Thank you!

I have the 42” and I love it. No issues at all and no maintenance. I plug it into my wall 110 wall outlet. I’ve been using this thing since early spring and my electric bill has not budged 🤷🏽‍♂️. Simple and easy to use. Like he said, after maybe the first 2-3 cuts you really get the hang of the controls and it’s smooth sailing after that

One handed driving leaves another extremity for beerage! And at 3:50 I visually confirmed beerage holders on the left. Unfortunately for me, my yard is tiny (yard size is indirectly proportional to junk size) and I ain't got no $$$$$$$$$$. BUT...I am loving battery powered mowing with my Makita 36v self propelled walk behind mower. No stink, no gas, no 2 cycle oil, NO NOISE! I am embracing the future and not looking back!! Around 5:35. Weather and conditions also affect gas powered mowers. You'll have to use more gas on tall wet grass. You'll have to use more charge on tall wet grass. And, instead of having to run to the gas station for more gas (and oil), with electric, you just recharge right where you are at. Very convenient. Just like the 70% less maintenance. And, when Spring comes, you charge the batteries and slap them in and off you go. No Spring tuneup needed.

Glad you addressed the warranty. 5 years sounds cool until you look at the price. The batteries should have a 10 year with up to 80% capacity type of warranty. Or number of full cycles. They are the biggest cost.
@NickWindham
@NickWindham 3 месяца назад
5yrs is pretty generous. If you’re smart, you’ll nurse them year 1-3, then absolutely abuse them, within warrantable usage of course ;-), to ensure they all fail within the next two years well before the 5 years is up. THEN, this deal makes good economic sense because you got a few more good years worth of batteries out of it.

@ToolReviewZone for sure. I think the charging system and or batteries were off. I returned it and bought a Ferris 60 inch ISX800. The Ferris has a 27 hp and I would say the electric kept up with it Nad provided a nice cut even when my grass was way over grown. The Ryobi also did just as good if not better for traction, although it was on a dryer day. The sound on the Ferris is so much more.

I think these are fantastic and appreciate your hands-on feedback. Like others say, though, I just can't justify the price, even of the smaller ones. I may look for someone's depleted lead acid 30 or 42" and pick it up cheap and perform a Lithium swap next year. Considering the JD I bought for $300 still runs like a top, I cannot justify $5k for a mower, even if it's this cool. This is one of my favorite videos from you, though. Currently using Ego push mower and other lawn equipment and when those start to die probably jumping over to Ryobi as I am all in on the 18v tools and really like them. Neighbor has one of these (not sure of the exact model) but it has the joystick like this. He let me use it several times and I must say it seems really nice but that joystick is not much fun to use. I simply couldn't ever hold it steady. My yard is not on a slope and not very bumpy at all. But my arm was always moving around causing me to move the stick. Not concerned about lines in my grass but it really looked like I had few beers in me while cutting as the cut lines were all over! lol I've never used a zero turn with the dual handles so can't really compare it much. But at least having a free hand let me wave to everybody driving by!

I have a 3 1/2 year old Ryobi electric zero turn. Less than a year into ownership it would not charge. Took it to Ryobi Authorized Service Center. They said they had no room for it and just left it outside. It was there for almost three months. They didn’t know anything about them our how to work on them, so they just threw parts at it until it worked. That’s fine for warranty work, but not on my dime. Next time it quit I took it to a different Ryobi Authorized Service Center. Same issue, they “thought” it might be a rear wheel drive motor, but not sure. Would cost about $450 to replace (out of warranty not). I took it home, bought the motor online and repaired it myself. It’s a great mower when it works, but they don’t know how to repair them. Just figure it’s junk after warranty runs out. And plan on waiting a long while if it goes to repair shop.
@rodgerneeb301
@rodgerneeb301 11 месяцев назад
You say no maintenance? So there are no grease zerks anywhere? That generally indicates the spindles get replaced as an entire expensive unit, rather than greasing the bearings then just replacing bearings when needed. Or is it even more expensive and the spindles are direct drive electric motors as opposed to belt driven from a single motor? Lack of maintenance is cheap the first season, but maintenance gets exponentially more expensive as things eventually do need fixed.

@eosjoe565 11 месяцев назад
Sooo... what you are saying is that you spent at least $2500 (EcoFlow + solar panels) so that you would have $0 charging costs. That seems like a pretty big charging cost. Assuming you cut grass 7 months out of the year that is $357/mo to charge (granted it's only one year). For $2500 I could purchase 728 gallons of gasoline which, using about 30 gallons per season to cut my lawn equates to around 25 years worth of gasoline. It is almost a certainty that in 25 years you will have had to at least replace your set of 80V and 40V batteries a couple times at a cost of over $4000 (3 x $900 + 4 x $400).

I've generally been against these 80v mowers (and other brands cordless) because there just not economical. There is such a price premium that almost nobody would break even in a reasonable time, if at all, especially if batteries need to be replaced. The Spring Black Friday deal finally made the ZTs price competitive with a comparable gas machine, but there's still the question of battery longevity. Well, today I named to snag one of the 30" ZT on the close out deals they're running, for $799. At that price is worth a shot, even if the batteries need to be replaced in a couple years. The big question I have is PARTS and SERVICE. I have a lot of Ryobi tools and like them but Ryobi does not have a good reputation when it comes to warranty and service. If you need a part where are you going to get it? I tried searching for availability for a deck motor and came up blank.

I spoke with Ryobi about this, and under the warranty, they will actually send someone to your house and fix it there for you.

6k for the 42in and 5k for the 30in. Way too expensive. The new Ego Tractor is $3,999 and Greenworks has a new 60v 30inch Zturn coming out for $3999 as well and a regular 30in 60v tractor for $3500. Ryobi best price check or we’ll see another fire sale on these like they did with the RM480 when Home Depot sold them for $500.

Unfortunately, my Ryobi has been a pile of shit. It's only one year old and just had its 2nd motor controller explode with three-inch flames shooting out of it. At over 300.00 bucks a pop, I'd be better off with a gas mower, which I will return to after selling this pile of junk. After looking online, I see that it's a common issue that Ryobi has with these mowers, but don't worry; they always have over 300 of them in stock, but it will take a month to have them shipped to you. I really wanted to like the Ryobi, but it's dead to me now. The new controllers are identical, so the issue isn't even fixed. However, it does work really nice, like when it's not on fire. 🤣

@@micker9830 a 54” deer is 3700. A 54” craftsman is 3200. So…. Do some math. How long does it take you to spend 1300 in gas on a mower? There is no way it will ever make financial sense for the average person. Please take special note of the word “average”. There are certainly use cases where it can make financial sense. Please also note I am not “knocking” electric mowers. Simply pulling on the “not one cent” metric that implies there is an average net cost savings. There isn’t. Generally.

@@Tinker3504 Its not just about gas. Its zero maintenance, no oil, air/fuel filters to clean or replace , gas to go buy, belts snapping off mid mow and having to wait several days for a new one, then have to put it on. No worrying about winterizing it. It's very quite and no exhaust smell or heat coming off it in the summer. That's worth extra to me. The 42" is the same price as the gas powered ones.

@@micker9830 right. You listed all the other things. Things that cost very little in both time and money. So again, it doesn’t make financial sense, but I understand why someone would buy one. It cost him at least 120,000 more single cents lol

Complete waste of money and all but useless on anything other than a perfect lawn. Just one of those 80v 10AH batteries is $900 and there are 3. Add in the 4 x 40v 12AH batteries and those are $359 each! I have gone through half a dozen of the 40v 3 and 4AH batteries for my Ryobi weed eater and have had major headaches with failed batteries and returns. You'd be 1000 times better off buying something like a Bad Boy gas mower!! Lithium ion batteries are not environmentally friendly and are far worse than just running a standard gasoline engine!! BTW.. None of those batteries (3 year limited warranty) are stocked at your local Home Depot and you're responsible for all shipping fees if there is no Ryobi service center close by. It's also only about $80 and an hour of time to do a tune up on a gas zero turn mower every other year or so. I'd love to be able to enjoy using one of these, but they're just nowhere near as cost effective as a good gas mower!
