This week Ryron shows us some great details on defending the footlock. He likes to bait his opponent with his foot so that he gets a chance to practice defending. At 2:19 Ryron discusses why he doesn't go right for mount off the defense. It's a very good example of why it's not always a good idea to be too 'greedy' when transitioning in between positions.

Before watching this video, I used to check under my bed every night for the footlock. After watching this video, I can finally say that I no longer fear the foot lock.

Absolutely correct, the leg knot and saddle is completely illegal because of the 'reap the knee' rule. It makes defending stupidly easy.

I know this is 8 years ago but since he's holding your leg could you go straight to mounted triangle fall to the side and push your leg your leg through having a lot of power to do it.

Right, so Palhares is training in a manner that seems to be a lot different than Ryron is talking about. The environment is different at different gyms and with different partners. Ryron, I'm sure trains in a way where people are taught to keep each other safe and not injure one another. I wouldn't train at a place that I don't feel safe at. So Ryron is working on the assumption that the viewer of the video is training safely with partners who are doing the same. Correct me if I'm wrong Ryron.

gr8 defence,have a small question,dont know if it would work but it seems possible and logical.While you mount him,you could try a choke,probably collar choke,so that he would start defending then choke rather than holding on to your leg.Just asking dont wonna play it cool,if someone knows plz reply.Ryror you rock love your vids

My problem is I get caught by footlocks a lot but they're usually so sloppy or varied that the feet do not match the position in this video. What are some high-level ideas to keep in mind when defending this without assuming exactly where the feet will be?
@bdjuggalo
@bdjuggalo 7 лет назад
Max Loh im a blue belt at a pure jiujitsu school but we don't ever learn foot locks. There is a couple of guys that know them they learned them somewhere else. So to learn to defend i watched this video and their heel hook video and implement them at an mma school on our city. I still don't know how to do heel hooks, but i did learn while getting caught over and over one trick for a straight ankle lock. When they go for it.. kick your foot deeper. For the straight ankle lock your toes to my knowledge have to be in their pits. So go deeper.

This is a good defence to a poor foot lock, but anyone who knows leg locks would not apply the foot lock like this as it is easy to defend! I would like to see the defence to the foot lock if applied correctly with a leg knot!

Question to the more experienced grapplers: What do you do against a heelhook where the partner does not use ashi garame, but has both legs/feet on the inside? How do I prevent that?
@kanguesso
@kanguesso 11 лет назад
It has nothing to do with a safe or unsafe environment. It has everything to do with the individual you're training with and if you know anything about Palhares, you should know that he has a reputation for breaking & dislocating limbs. He trains exactly as he fights. That's what makes his opponents fear his leg attacks. They are so petrified at the thought of him grabbing one of their limbs that they make silly mistakes. In the gym, guys even start tapping way before he applies any pressure.
@golddee2040
@golddee2040 6 лет назад
With the Death Squad on the prowl, everyone is scared of foot locks now. Also, if they are silly enough to try and use their free arm to try to frame and keep you from coming up to mount, they just gave you an armbar. Take it.

I agree. My issue isn't with tapping, it is with the attitude he espouses. Assuming that you are training for self-defense/fighting and not sport "the worst thing that happens" isn't that you tap. The worst thing that happens is you are beaten, bloodied or killed. Very different perspective. I would argue, being that BJJ is still marketed as "self-defense" or "fighting" it is not a far-out assumption to make. BJJ is having a hard time determining whether it is fighting or sport.
@MaxLohMusic
@MaxLohMusic 7 лет назад
Bro. He is talking about letting yourself get footlocked during TRAINING. He did not, anywhere in the video, imply that in a real fight you should go easy on your opponent or work on your weaknesses.

@MaxLohMusic
@MaxLohMusic 2 года назад
@NK Yes. On the flip side it only takes a strong dude a month of training to slap on a mediocre ankle lock that can tap out people with bad leg lock defense. It's currently one of my weaknesses I'm trying to improve
@nathanmandrell905
@nathanmandrell905 10 лет назад
Very true sir, but where is he right now? In a gym, practicing with his friend. The worst thing that happens to him in this setting is that he taps. And because he tapped, he can talk with Scott Lewis about how he had a shitty escape and how he can improve it. Then he will repeat the foot lock, until he doesn't tap again. That way, if/when the day comes when a failed escape attempt results in shattered ligaments, he has already mastered the skill. He trains for both sport and street this way.

Leave your foot dangling so your opponent can put you in a foot lock and you can practice the escape, right. Rousimar Palhares would love that philosophy!

I just don't get why one would sit down if he catches a footlock standing. You have more leverage and it's way harder to defend. At least I get like 95% of the footlocks standing, but i may be wrong :)
